His research is located in the Sociology of Journalism and focuses on transfor- mations in the media industry, locally and globally; changes in the profession and practices of journalism, and the journalist’s roles in society. He is co-investigator on an ESRC-funded seminar series on widening diversity in the news industry. His teaching spans media law; media ethics; the principles and practice of multimedia journalism and editing and design. David is a trustee of Media Wise, a board member of ICE, the Institute for Communication Ethics; a member of the NUJ’s Professional Training Committee and a Fel- low of the Higher Education Academy. Journalism Practice, Vol 4 Issue 1, (pp. 97-113) Alec Charles Alec Charles is Principal Lecturer in Journalism and Deputy Director of the Research Institute for Media, Art & Design at the University of Bedfordshire, and has previously taught at universities in Estonia, Japan and Cornwall. He has made documentaries for BBC Radio 3, has worked as a print journalist in eastern Europe and has written for British Journalism Review and Tribune. He is the editor of Media in the Enlarged Europe (Intellect, 2009) and co-editor of The End of Journalism (Peter Lang, 2011). His recent publications include papers in Science Fiction Studies and Science Fiction Film & Television, as well as chapters in vari- ous books on film, television, literature and new media. Tor Clark Tor Clark is Principal Lecturer in Journalism, BA Journalism programme leader and a Teacher Fellow at De Montfort University in Leicester. His main interests are political journalism, the UK regional media, the history of journalism, learning, teaching and the student experience. He was a previously a journalist in the regional press working on free, daily and weekly newspapers, two of which he edited. He is now a regular contributor to BBC Radio Leicester on political and journalistic issues and has also written for Total Politics magazine. Neil Farrington Neil Farrington is a senior lecturer in sports journalism at the University of Sunderland. He worked for 16 years as a multi-award nominated sports journalist in Newcastle upon Tyne, and was sports editor of the Sunday Sun before becoming sports news editor of the newly amalgamated NCJ Media sports desk in 2008. He has a BA in English Literature from the University of Hull. He is co-author of Race, Racism and Sports Journalism published in 2012 by Routledge and of the article ‘Changing the Game? The impacts of Twitter on relationships between football clubs, supporters and the sports media’, forthcoming in Soccer and Society. Chris Frost Chris Frost is Professor and Head of Journalism, and director of the Centre for Responsible Journalism at Liverpool John Moores University in the UK and has been a journalist, editor and journalism educator for more than 40 years. He is chair of the National Union of Journalist’s Ethics Council, an NUJ National Ex- ecutive Council member and a National Council member of the Campaign for Press and Broadcasting Free- dom. He also sits on the NUJ’s Professional Training Committee. He is a former President of the National Union of Journalists, a former member of the Press Council and a former National Chair of the Association for Journalism Education. Editorial Volume 1 number 1 Journalism Education page 5 He has written several books on Journalism: Journalism Ethics and Regulation (now in third edition); Designing for Newspapers and Magazines (now in a second edition); Reporting for Journalists (now in its second edition); and Media Ethics and Self-Regulation as well as numerous other papers and book chapters. Lee Hall Lee Hall is a Senior Lecturer in Magazine Journalism at the University of Sunderland. He worked for five years at Future Publishing where he edited national newsstand videogames magazines. He continues to work as a freelance journalist and has written for a range of titles including FourFourTwo, BBC Focus and Edge. He was digital editor of the Sunderland Echo for three years. He has a BA in English Literature from the University of Liverpool and an MA in Magazine Journalism from the University of Sunderland. His publications include: Price, J., Farrington, N. & Hall, L. The impacts of Twitter on relationships between football clubs, supporters and the sports media’, Soccer and Society Steve Harrison Steve Harrison joined the Liverpool John Moores University Journalism department in September 2008, having spent most of his working life as a journalist with the Liverpool Daily Post and Echo. An Oxford graduate in English, Steve began his career at the Winsford Guardian in 1983 before moving to the Post and Echo in 1986, where he was variously a reporter, sub editor and online editor. His last role there was Assistant Editor (Digital), responsible for running around 30 news websites. Steve has an interest in social media and newsroom numeracy, and recently completed a BSc in Mathematics with the Open University. Tony Harcup Tony Harcup is a senior lecturer at Sheffield University. He began working in journalism in the late 1970s as a staff and freelance journalist for media ranging from small local weekly publications to national news- papers and magazines, both alternative and mainstream. Since the late 1990s he has worked in journalism education and is currently a senior lecturer at the University of Sheffield in the UK. Tony is the author of The Ethical Journalist (Sage, 2007) and Journalism: Principles and Practice (Sage, 2004 and 2009), and his research has been published in Journalism Studies, Journalism Practice, Journalism: Theory, Practice and Criticism and other academic journals. His next book will be Alternative Journalism, Alternative Voices (Routledge, forthcoming). Tony is an active member of the Association for Journalism Education (AJE) and the National Union of Journalists (NUJ). Barbara Mitra Dr Barbara Mitra is a Senior Lecturer in Media and Cultural Studies at the University of Worcester. Her main research and teaching interests are in the fields of children and gender, television commercials, new media, television journalism, and methodology. She has previously published in the areas of children and gender, television and the use of technology in learning and teaching.
