FRASIER: A CULTURAL HISTORY Joseph J. Darowski and Kate Darowski Lanham, MD: Rowman & Littlefield, 2017 ROBERT MURTAGH Universidad de Almería [email protected] 177 Part of independent publisher Rowman & Littlefield’s “Cultural History of Television” series that (according to their website) “will focus on iconic television shows” from the 1950s to the present that have had a lasting impact on world culture, Frasier: A Cultural History joins a collection of extant publications on defining sitcoms such as Mad Men, Breaking Bad and Star Trek. The authors of the text in question, Joseph J. Darowski and Kate Darowski, are self-confessed Frasier fans with a background in different ambits of cultural study (the former as editor of the “Ages of Superheroes” essay series and author of X-Men and the Mutant Metaphor: Race and Gender in the Comic Books and the latter having researched the history of decorative arts and design). Above all, they share a mutual appreciation for all things Crane. From a structural perspective, the book is divided into two parts: “Part I: Making A Classic” and “Part II: Under Analysis”. Each section is further subdivided into four separate topics. The first deals with: the evolution of Cheers to the emergence of Frasier Crane; the story behind the eclectic cast; character profiles of Frasier, Niles, Martin and Eddy; and finally, a discussion of Daphne and Roz. The second part, as the name suggests, is more academically inclined with chapters examining ongoing character development in the Crane household; an in-depth look at Frasier’s apartment from structural and aesthetic perspectives, as well as in contrast to Niles’s home at the Montana; an analysis of set decoration, particularly chairs; and lastly, the representation of women, gender and race. -

The film is produced by Williams and her husband, Independent Spirit Award winner and Sundance alum Neal Dodson (Margin Call). MEATS is an exploration of the ethics of meat-eating and the fears inherent with becoming a parent. In the short film, Williams plays Lane, who has hired a whole-animal butcher named Chris (played by real-life master butcher Giancarlo Sbarbaro), to educate her on how to responsibly break down a lamb and use every part. Upon arrival, Lane is simultaneously disgusted and mesmerized by the carcass in front of her. As Lane liberates the meat from the bone, she also frees a whole new side of herself, revealing humor, pain, connection, and a newfound mother-to-be. CounterNarrative Films presents MEATS. The cinematographer is Roman Vasyanov (Triple Frontier, Fury, Sundance alum with The East and Charlie Countryman). The editor is Cecilia Delgado. Color is by Roman Hankewycz (Sundance alum with Sound of Silence and Equity, among others) from Harbor Picture Company. Sound design is by three- time Academy-Award nominee Steve Boeddeker (All Is Lost, Black Panther, Sundance alum with I Origins, among others) at Skywalker Sound. -

First Look Program 2021
WELCOME to FIRST LOOK 2021 Welcome to the First Look Festival of 2021! One of my great pleasures as Dean of the School of Cinematic Arts is being able to introduce our festival films each year, and congratulate all the deserving students who contributed to them. This year I am especially proud of the determination and dedication inherent in these projects, as they were completed within the limitations of Covid 19 protocols. Despite this, the work you will see here is of the highest quality, and many will go on to tour the film festival circuit and win awards in the year ahead. They will also serve as calling cards for the talented young professionals who are graduating from the School and launching careers as filmmakers. Our students always depend on their family and friends to help them through their programs. Filmmaking is a challenging endeavor, and it takes a village of encouragement to have the confidence needed to bring a project to fruition. This year our students truly needed support, as our campus was shut down and many of them had to return home. Despite not being able to meet in person, the filmmakers found ways to collaborate. And as their films will attest, did so brilliantly! So please enjoy this year’s festival. And congratulations to all the students whose names appear in the end credits of these films. Elizabeth M. Daley Steven J. Ross/Time Warner Professor and Dean USC School of Cinematic Arts I firmly believe that film has been the major art form of the 20th century, and will continue to have a powerful influence on our culture and society. -

Often, female journalists are portrayed as vivacious, ruthless, and driven individuals who must compete fiercely to survive in a man’s profession. Robin Scherbatsky (played by Cobie Smulders) of How I Met Your Mother is depicted as an attractive Canadian journalist with a tomboy past on the highly popular television series. Scherbatsky struggles to break free from covering stereotypical “fluff” stories, a genre that is common to female broadcast journalists. While she maintains a rugged and unemotional facade, she is still very womanly and vulnerable in both her career and personal life. This study will examine Scherbatsky’s dichotomous character, compare her image on the series to that of other female journalists in popular culture, and analyze her influence on the current stereotype of female broadcasters. -
