The central argument of this thesis is that Chinese post-Cold War experimental theatre has been greatly influenced by the trend of globalisation. This dissertation discusses the work of a number of representative figures in the “Little Theatre Movement” in mainland China since the 1980s, e.g. Lin Zhaohua, Meng Jinghui, Zhang Xian, etc., whose theatrical experiments have had a strong impact on the development of contemporary Chinese theatre, and inspired a younger generation of theatre practitioners. Through both close reading of literary and visual texts, and the inspection of secondary texts such as interviews and commentaries, an overview of performances mirroring the age-old Chinese culture’s struggle under the unprecedented modernising and globalising pressure in the post-Cold War period will be provided.

According to the law of diminishing marginal utility, the marginal utility when consumers purchase a certain product shows a diminishing trend. As a special product, cultural tourism products, whether is the marginal utility produced during consumption also affected by the law of diminishing marginal utility. This paper takes "Impression Liu Sanjie" as the research object and uses a linear regression equation model to study the marginal utility of tourists "Impression Liu Sanjie" cultural tourism products. The results show that the marginal utility produced by tourists buying the cultural tourism products of "Impression Liu Sanjie" shows an obvious decreasing trend. The main reason is that the cultural tourism products of "Impression Liu Sanjie" lack innovation and strong brand characteristics, the overall scale is small, the positioning is not accurate, etc., affected by the competition of homogenized products in the surrounding area, and the return rate of tourists is low. Moreover, there is a gap between existing products and the development trend of high-end tourism, which cannot meet the needs of tourists for in- depth experience and research tourism. Therefore, "Impression Liu Sanjie" needs to intensify innovation, fundamentally solve the problem of diminishing marginal utility, further stabilize the source of tourists and meet the needs of tourists for repeated consumption quality, and realize sustainable tourism development.

    7 Ugly Intellectuals Everywhere During the early 1960s, the musical drama Third Sister Liu (Liu Sanjie) took China’s cultural scene by storm. The musical was created in Guangxi Province, far removed from the PRC capital at Beijing. It drew on the folklore of Third Sister Liu, whose legend has permeated South China since the Tang dynasty (618–907). The performance features a peasant heroine of Zhuang minority origin using her ingenuity in singing and improvising mountain folksongs (shan’ge) to help poor villagers fight against predatory landlords and their hangers-on. The musical was staged in Beijing between July and September 1960, including four times inside the official compound of Zhongnanhai, where Chairman Mao and other CCP leaders worked and lived. After receiving praise from the leaders, the troupe toured no fewer than thirteen provinces and regions and some twenty cities, many of which staged their own productions of the play.1 By January 1961, radio and television stations nationwide were playing excerpts of the musical to ring in the Western and the Chinese New Year; gramophone recordings of the musical were avail- able for sale and distribution. Later that year, Changchun Film Studio (Changchun dianying zhipian chang), one of the biggest in China, released Third Sister Liu as a musical feature film set along the banks of the Li River in spectacular Guilin in Guangxi. With an impressive score, witty lines, memorable characters, and supe- rior cinematography, the movie was an instant hit. Productions of colored pictures of the actresses and actors as well as sheet music and artwork related to the movie followed, just in time for another New Year celebration.

The beautiful views, the Liu Sanjie music show, and extremely busy West Street all left a strong impression on me. I was delighted that I had the opportunity to return to this place and to get to know its people in more depth during my PhD study. It is an absolutely different feeling to have a hands-on experience of something. When you read about the impacts of tourism on people’s quality of life in a textbook or journal article, it’s a more holistic view. But when you have actually been in the place and spoken to people, seen the smiles on their faces, heard their voices, shared their emotions and noticed the changes, it is very different. I realised, not simply understood, how tourism has changed people’s lives, made them happy, or made them worried. Talking to the residents and getting to know each of them made them no longer a number in the statistical analysis - the quantity matters, and each individual also matters. One thing I am sure about is that without tourism, their lives would be very different. This study was conducted to determine residents’ perceived quality of life; to understand their opinions, emotions and perceptions.
