I agree to deposit this thesis in the University’s open access institutional repository or allow the library to do so on my behalf, subject to Irish Copyright Legislation and Trinity College Library Conditions of use and acknowledgement. ___________________ Zheyu Wei ii Summary This thesis is a study of Chinese experimental theatre from the year 1990 to the year 2014, to examine the involvement of Chinese theatre in the process of globalisation – the increasingly intensified relationship between places that are far away from one another but that are connected by the movement of flows on a global scale and the consciousness of the world as a whole. The central argument of this thesis is that Chinese post-Cold War experimental theatre has been greatly influenced by the trend of globalisation. This dissertation discusses the work of a number of representative figures in the “Little Theatre Movement” in mainland China since the 1980s, e.g. Lin Zhaohua, Meng Jinghui, Zhang Xian, etc., whose theatrical experiments have had a strong impact on the development of contemporary Chinese theatre, and inspired a younger generation of theatre practitioners. Through both close reading of literary and visual texts, and the inspection of secondary texts such as interviews and commentaries, an overview of performances mirroring the age-old Chinese culture’s struggle under the unprecedented modernising and globalising pressure in the post-Cold War period will be provided. -

Engaging with Socialism in China: The Political Thought and Activities of Chen Gongbo and Tan Pingshan, 1917-1928 Xuduo Zhao PhD University of York History May 2019 1 Abstract This thesis investigates Chen Gongbo (1892-1946) and Tan Pingshan (1886-1956), two significant Cantonese Marxists who helped found the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in 1921. I use Chen and Tan as a lens to re-examine the dissemination of Marxism in May Fourth China and the underlying tensions in 1920s Chinese revolution. My study demonstrates that it was in the changing educational system in the early 20th century that Chen and Tan gradually improved their positions in the cultural field and participated in the intellectual ferment during the May Fourth period. At Peking University they became familiarised with Marxism. Their understanding of Marxism, however, was deeply influenced by European social democracy, as opposed to many other early communist leaders who believed in Bolshevism. This divergence finally led to the open conflict within the CCP between Guangzhou and Shanghai in the summer of 1922, which also embodied the different social identities among early Chinese Marxists. After the quarrel, Chen quit while Tan remained within the party. During the Nationalist Revolution, both Tan and Chen became senior leaders in the Kuomintang, but they had to face yet another identity crisis of whether to be a revolutionary or a politician. Meanwhile, they had to rethink the relationship between socialism and nationalism in their political propositions. This study of Chen and Tan’s political thought and activities in the late 1910s and 1920s offers a different picture of Chinese radicalism and revolution in the early Republican period. -

According to the law of diminishing marginal utility, the marginal utility when consumers purchase a certain product shows a diminishing trend. As a special product, cultural tourism products, whether is the marginal utility produced during consumption also affected by the law of diminishing marginal utility. This paper takes "Impression Liu Sanjie" as the research object and uses a linear regression equation model to study the marginal utility of tourists "Impression Liu Sanjie" cultural tourism products. The results show that the marginal utility produced by tourists buying the cultural tourism products of "Impression Liu Sanjie" shows an obvious decreasing trend. The main reason is that the cultural tourism products of "Impression Liu Sanjie" lack innovation and strong brand characteristics, the overall scale is small, the positioning is not accurate, etc., affected by the competition of homogenized products in the surrounding area, and the return rate of tourists is low. Moreover, there is a gap between existing products and the development trend of high-end tourism, which cannot meet the needs of tourists for in- depth experience and research tourism. Therefore, "Impression Liu Sanjie" needs to intensify innovation, fundamentally solve the problem of diminishing marginal utility, further stabilize the source of tourists and meet the needs of tourists for repeated consumption quality, and realize sustainable tourism development. -

And the paper will analyze fourteen the Zhuang style piano songs to summarize nine cultural connotations of the creation of Zhuang style piano songs including geographical environment, historical background, festival celebrations, fairy stories, labor life, opera dance, folk songs, percussion instruments, and language tones. These cultural connotations have reflected the artistic value of the Zhuang style piano songs, which provides a reference for the creation and performance of the Zhuang style piano songs. Keywords: Zhuang style, Piano songs, Cultural connotation Introduction Piano musical instruments have been developed in China for more than 100 years. In 1934, a Chinese pianist named He Luting composed the piano song of "Shepherd Boy Piccolo", marking the establishment of Chinese style piano music. In the past hundred years, what is Chinese style music has been a topic that composers and music scholars have been discussing and waiting to answer. PRASENJIT DUARA 3 Historical consciousness and national identity Most Chinese are extremely proud of their long and continuous historical civilization, which some claim extends for fi ve thousand years. But for much of the twentieth century, Chinese revolutionaries had a very ambivalent and mostly negative view of these millennia, believing that they produced a slavish and feudal mentality. The vicissitudes of mod- ern historical consciousness in China closely refl ect the kind of nation and society that regimes and intellectuals battled over in their search for a new China and an identity for the Chinese people. In other words, if we want to understand how Chinese leaders and people see their society and their role in the world, we need to consider their changing views of history. For much of the last hundred years, one of the central historical ques- tions that has preoccupied scholars and statesmen seeking to make sense of China’s present relates to the transition from a Confucian, im- perial society to a modern nation-state. In contrast to many other non- Western societies, imperial China possessed several characteristics that would facilitate this transition – as well as several that would hinder it. -
