There was an excellent turn-out for our meeting last month to hear Stewart Linford talk about the 'Remarkable Story of our National Chair, the Windsor Chair'. He kept us amused with witty anecdotes and by checking our knowledge of chairs and the varieties of wood used. He brought with him some beautiful examples of his craftsmanship and related the history associated with chairs. Stewart ended his entertaining talk sitting in his splendid hand-crafted Winston Churchill chair, dressed as the great man himself, complete with bowler hat and a Cuban Romeo y Julietas cigar, while giving us a spirited rendering of Winston's Finest Hour speech.

Thirty two members, along with some husbands, headed off on a coach to spend the day at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. After being met at the entrance they were divided into three groups each led by a guide. Each group enjoyed a comprehensive tour of the museum's incredibly rich and diverse collections from around the globe, ranging from Egyptian mummies and classical sculpture to the Pre-Raphaelites and Modern Art. The reports I have received back speak of 'a fascinating, extremely interesting place, so ably described by the helpful, dedicated guides'. Trips, like this, are always popular as they offer us opportunities to go out and about with friends and not worry about the driving.

Some of us have formed a Pub Group and intend on meeting up now and again at different venues, The first outing, to The Old Fox at , was a great success so the next outing is already being planned - all in true W.I. spirit of course. Cheers!!

It rarely dis- appoints. The blossom has been gorgeous and the scent of new growth in the air has been a joy to the eye and to the nose. The ears too have been serenaded by birdsong. In the little lane by our house as we walk the dog early in the morning, it can be like walking with the very best stereo surround sound clamped to your ears. Breathtaking and glorious assault on our senses! Whilst I am in this reflective mood about the joys of spring, Sheila and I count ourselves lucky to be able to see and hear new or different nature treats on our visits to France. We make lists and have recently added black kites, heard and seen migrating storks, the beautiful song of the nightingale, Swallow Tail butterfly's, Duke of Burgundy butterfly, fire salamanders, and a wild boar – actually we didn't see him, rather we heard him disconcertedly close by in the hedge as we walked at night! Continuing this theme of the wonder of nature, I was heartened by a story that emerged recently of a butterfly sanctuary in the USA. The headline said, “How but- terflies are fighting Trump's border wall”. It has a sort of David and Goliath flavour to it. Brute strength and size versus weakness, vulnerability and delicateness. It seems that the wall or part of it, might find it's nemesis in the humble, beautiful butterfly. The National Butterfly Center in the Rio Grande,Texas would be a casualty of the bulldozers if the wall were to be built through it's middle. The fight to protect the Center continues at present in the courts. I happily acknowledge to being on the side of the underdog in this. Delicacy and the beauty of nature over steel and the bulldozers every time! The big things and big issues of life may seem beyond our influence or control. The things of nature however... the birdsong, the flowers, butterflies etc.... these things we can surely all delight in and simply stand, listen and wonder at the glory that we have all around us. On 8th May the Christian church remembers and celebrates the life of Mother Ju- lian of Norwich, a 14th Century mystic and anchoress. She wrote about her revela- tions of Jesus Christ, in the book, “Divine Revelations of Love”. There she reflected on the littlest and most vulnerable wonders of nature. In all things she saw the nature of God....and delighted in it. “And in this he showed me a little thing, the quantity of a hazel nut, lying in the palm of my hand, as it seemed. And it was as round as any ball. I looked upon it with the eye of my understanding, and thought, ‘What may this be?’ And it was answered generally thus, ‘It is all that is made.’ I marveled how it might last, for I thought it might suddenly have fallen to nothing for littleness. And I was answered in my understanding: It lasts and ever shall, for God loves it. And so have all things their beginning by the love of God. In this little thing I saw three properties. The first is that God made it. The second that God loves it. And the third, that God keeps it.” Julian of Norwich, Revelations of Divine Love. Yours in Christ - Ian

Page 7 Christian Aid Week: ‘All mums should live’ Sierra Leone is the world’s most dangerous place to become a mum. Every day 10 women die from giving birth. In Sawula district, the community struggle with a clinic which has no electricity and only two delivery beds. Jebbeh is heavily pregnant but as her baby grows, it’s not joy that fills her heart, but fear. When Jebbeh’s sister Fatmata went in to labour, there were so few ambulances that Fatmata had no choice but to walk for three hours under the baking sun, to the nearest hospi- tal. The journey was long and with every step Fatmata struggled to keep walking. Jebbeh told us: ‘My sister was crying out with hunger. She died on the side of the road. She never gave birth.’ This Christian Aid Week, ogether,t we can make childbirth safe for mums and babies. Through our gifts, we can help give the world’s poorest mums a chance to live. Photo credit: Christian Aid/Tom Pilston Christian Aid Collection for Christian Aid Week If you have received a red Christian Aid envelope and would like to donate, could you please return by 31st May, to Uley shop or to St Giles Church. If you are able to gift aid, please complete the form on the envelope. Envelopes are also available in the shop and in church. Thank you.

On behalf of Uley Community Stores (Shop Diary) and Uley Society (Uley Show) I would like to say a very big THANK YOU to Becky and Kate for all their hard work and dedication to editing the Village News for the last 2 years. They have really done an excellent job, a lot of hard work and patience waiting for all the articles to arrive by the deadline. I look forward to working with your successor(s). Good luck in your future ventures. Pami Davis

Page 8 Food & Drink Rhubarb Muffins Here is an easy recipe that makes use of seasonal gar- den rhubarb and provides an alternative to a crumble (or an addition to, as you can’t have too much of either!) What you need 125g soft light brown sugar 1 tbsp sunflower oil 1 egg 1 tsp vanilla extract 100ml buttermilk 100g raw rhubarb, cut into 1cm chunks 175g wholemeal flour 1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda Pinch of salt 2 tbsp demerara (or brown) sugar 1 tsp ground cinnamon Method 1. Preheat the oven to 200°C & line a muffin tin with paper cases 2. In a large bowl mix the soft light brown sugar, oil, egg, vanilla extract and buttermilk, then add the rhubarb 3. Sift over the dry ingredients - wholemeal flour, baking powder, bicar- bonate of soda and salt, then fold until just combined & quite lumpy (don’t over-work it) 4. Spoon the mixture into your muffin cases. Mix the demerara sugar and cinnamon & sprinkle over the top. 5. Bake for 18-20 minutes until golden 6. Leave to stand in the tin for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool. These are great eaten immediately but will keep for several days in an airtight container. Jenny Russell

Page 9 Page 10 FROM THE PARISH REGISTER Those whose Year's Mind falls at this time Alan Derek Bartlett, Audrey Booth, Graeme Bone, Effie Duffett, Wenda Elliott, Derek Heaney, Enid Sylvia Holloway, Eric James Lockier, Bettina Mack, May Charlotte Neville; Margaret Robins, Diane Rule, Alfred Rymer, Olive Lillian Sharland, Nancy May Shipton, Rosemary Stokes, Gerald Thomas, Mervyn Tilling, Tessa Watts Church news A new Churchwarden At the Annual Parochial Church Meeting (APCM) on 7th April, Ann Hardy was re-elect- ed as Churchwarden of the parish of Uley with Owlpen and Nympsfield and Pauline Thomas was elected to serve as the other Churchwarden. Pauline replaces Jo Rymer, who chose to stand down after many years in the role. We are enormously grateful to Jo for all that she has done, across all 3 churches, during her time as Churchwarden. Jo has given such dedicated and faithful service and always with a smile and a wonderfully positive attitude. We are all pleased to know that Jo will continue to serve in lots of different ways and has already been elected to the PCC! Farewell At the APCM, Janet Bannister stood down from the role of PCC secretary which she has held for many years. On Easter Sunday we reluctantly said ‘goodbye’ or ‘au revoir’ to Janet, as she and her husband moved to live in France. We thanked Janet for her many years of contribution to the life of the parish, to Churches Together in Cam and Dursley, to the Wotton Deanery and to the Diocese of Gloucester. It was so good that these many years of service were recognised during the year when Janet was admitted to the Order of St Kyneburga during a service in Gloucester Cathedral. Members are appoint- ed to the Order by the Bishop of Gloucester in recognition of their service to the life of the Church. Holy Cross organ Work on the overhaul of the organ began in January and the church has been closed for services since then. Inevitably, once the organ was dismantled, extra repair work was needed both to the organ and to the area of wall in the church where the organ is sited. It is hoped that the organ will be back in place and ready for services in June. Fund-rais- ing continues so that we can re-pay the amount that was ‘borrowed’ to pay the bills for this work. We are very grateful to those who have made donations and to those grant-making bodies, especially the Mercer’s Company who donated £10,000. New notice board for St Giles We are currently displaying notices relating to a Faculty application to grant us permis- sion to install a new notice board in the churchyard at St Giles. This will replace the old wooden one which had to be taken down before it fell down! The new board will also carry up-to-date information about the Ewelme Benefice and how to make contact with us. St Giles proposals Many thanks to those who came to discuss the plans for St Giles at the end of March, and for the comments and suggestions that have been made. The plans are still on dis- play in the church, with a box for comments to be left. These will be considered by the PCC in May before the Faculty application is submitted.

Page 11 Uley Parish Council News Investigating New Community Notice Boards Councillor Wood and Councillor Martin have walked the length of the village to find some suit- able locations for potential community notice boards. The Council concluded that sensible sites would include the lower bus stop opposite Fop Street, outside the Village Hall and an additional one in the Village Shop. They noted that the existing ones aren’t attractive or large enough there- fore by purchasing new notice boards they could be more suitable for the village. Play Days Play Days will be taking place in Uley on the 30th May and 30th August between 10am and 4pm. Play Gloucestershire - a registered charity - is the leading provider of free, outdoor, active play in the county. Our Play Rangers activities target 7 - 14 year olds. Under 7’s are welcome and should be accompanied by a parent or carer. We love families to join us at all our sessions. Our Play Ranger activities are open access. This means there is no registration – children can leave the site at any time. Our Play Rangers will not stop them and may not know that they have left. We encourage children to take responsibilities for their own actions. We think this is good for them. They will be encouraged to resolve disagreements amongst themselves. We will intervene if absolutely necessary. Play Gloucestershire believe that children need and want to take risks when they play. Our Play Rangers aim to respond to these needs by offering children stimulating, challenging environments for exploring and developing their abilities. In doing this, we aim to manage the level of risk so that children are not exposed to unacceptable risks. Our experience tells us that whilst children play outdoors they are likely to have accidents. If this causes concern please come along and speak to us about it. All our activities are outdoors and include den building, fires, arts and crafts, sports and a range of playful games. We encourage children to play freely and choose what they do. They do not have to do anything if they don’t want to. Children will get wet, hot, cold, smelly and dirty and need to wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Better to wear old play clothes than ruin your best! Our Play Rangers will provide drinking water at all sessions. We promote healthy eating and sometimes will provide free fruit. We believe all children have the right to play. Please talk to us if your child needs additional sup- port to enjoy Play Rangers. We welcome disabled children & their families. Road Safety Order Councillor Martin has reported via the Road Safety Group that The Street in Uley has been identified as a potential road to have the speed limit reduced from 30mph to 20pmh. By moving forward with the proposed Rural Multi-Site Traffic Regulation Order it would provide the Council with the opportunity to identify if there is a problem. It will also work out more cost effective as the equipment bought by the group to monitor speed would be shared between member parishes. Sewage Issue As you are probably aware there is an ongoing issue with sewage in the village. The Parish Council would like to remind Parishioners to please not flush wet wipes down the toilet as this largely contributes to the issue. Bonfire Alternatives Oh to be in , now that April’s here! Complaints already about bonfires, noisy garden machinery. Please do as you would be done by. Alternatives to bonfires. - Composting, trip to tip or use SDC’s very good garden waste collection, fortnightly £45 per annum. Alternatives to noisy tools. - Go battery powered. Please consider.
