Situation Bencombe Farmhouse is quietly situated in a lovely rural setting just below the Cotswold escarpment in an area designated as being of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It lies about half a mile away from the sought after village of Uley which has a post office/shop, two pubs, a primary school and a Church. The nearby towns of Wotton-under-Edge, Dursley and Tetbury have a range of excellent shops and services for everyday needs including supermarkets, sports centres and in the locality there are a number of renowned pubs and restaurants including Calcot Manor with its first class spa. Communications are excellent with links to both the M4 (J17 and J18) and the M5 (J13 and J14) providing access to London, Bath, Bristol (International Airport), Cheltenham and the Midlands. Sporting opportunities are extensive including golf at Cotswold Edge golf course, Minchinhampton and Westonbirt, racing at Cheltenham, and Bath and premier rugby at Gloucester and Bath. There are also a network of footpaths and bridle ways providing excellent walking and riding in the area, hunting with the Berkeley and nearby Duke of Beaufort’s Hunt, as well as many equestrian events, including nearby Badminton and Gatcombe Park horse trials. Bencombe Farmhouse Bencombe Farmhouse is an attractive detached modern family house which was built we believe in 1992 of natural Cotswold stone under a reconstituted stone tiled roof. It is situated in an elevated position and the majority of rooms are light and enjoy lovely views over the surrounding countryside. The accommodation, which is well presented, is arranged over two floors and extends to just under 2,200 sq ft. A generous entrance hall provides access to all the principal ground floor rooms and of particular note are the sitting room and kitchen/breakfast rooms both of which are of an excellent size. On the first floor there is a galleried landing, a master suite of bedroom and shower room, three further bedrooms and a family bathroom. There is an integral double garage attached to one side of the house and this could potentially be converted to provide addi- tional living accommodation if required, subject to obtaining the relevant planning permission. Gardens and grounds In front of the house there is a wide gravel parking area and a double garage, with twin up and over doors, is attached to the side of the house. Beyond the drive there is an area of lawn and the front of the house faces north/west and has a lovely view across to the village of Uley and the wooded hills beyond. The majority of the garden lies to the rear of the house and comprises of a large area of lawn. There is a wide gravel terrace running immediately behind the house. The rear of the house faces south east and adjoins an open field with a lovely aspect to a wooded escarpment behind. There is a timber cabin to the side of the parking area which provides a useful home office/studio space. When recalling his life in the coun- tryside, he felt that ‘there wasn’t much to do in the evenings ::: at least not here’. Drawing upon evidence from personal accounts of growing up in the south-west of England in the early twentieth century, this article examines memories of youth in the countryside, with a particular focus on the leisure lives of young people and their experiences of rural space and place. In addition to adding to our knowledge on the lives of rural youth, this study also provides new insights into the complex relationship between people and their environment, and has implications for our understandings of the early formation of a distinct youthful identity in England. The countryside was not simply a backdrop in these recollections; rather, it was for- mative in how those that grew up in rural communities understood their experience of being young. Introduction Stan was born in 1911 in a small village near the north Somerset coast, and grew up in what he described as a ‘typical country cottage’. He felt that ‘there wasn’t all that much to do in the eve- nings’, adding ‘there were no such things as cinemas being opened, for instance, and dance halls and other entertainments, at least not here’.1 Harry, who grew up in Uley, Gloucestershire, spent his childhood exploring the fields and lanes of the village and surrounding countryside, but also remembered that ‘entertainment in rural areas was sparse, except self-created jokes and fun’.

Our first walk was a 5 mile 'Tall Trees' walk led by Richard, easy walking but it did take us 3 hours. We learned how to measure tree height. The second day's walk to Wimbleball Lake was led by Denys and proved to be rather eventful .It was planned to be 10.2 miles but the experts tell me that it was over 12 miles and this was born out from my crude estimation when I thought we were at the end only to be advised that there was another 1.5 miles to go. After a showery start the weather cleared up and we finished in good conditions, just a few puddles and mud to contend with. Lunch was at a church in Morebath where some kind ladies turned up to provide tea and biscuits. The main event occurred when our revered chairman fell off the radar. Initially we were not too concerned because the plus or minus 10 % rule applied but in the end a search party was sent out and was successful. A lesson was learned how important it is to have an effective TEC.
