Contemporary debates about identity in post-national Iberia are often contingent upon the belief that since the nineteenth century there was a singular, official Spanish national identity that in the last few decades has been superseded by the political recognition of Spain’s autonomous communities. I engage with these discussions by taking nineteenth-century Galicia as a starting point for thinking about post-national Iberian identities. Through a close reading of the region’s fin- de-siècle literature, we see that rather than offering singular origins for what have become modern day Galician and Spanish identities, this was a period marked by linguistic, political and cultural ambiguity. Literary, feminist and post-colonial studies help analyze the complex images of home and family (the nation and the region) that were represented by Galician authors. Beginning with a critical history of the Rexurdimento (c. 1860-1900), we see that the linguistic plurality of Galicia justifies questioning philologically determined definitions of Spanish and Galician literatures that have limited the ways in which critics have approached them. The second chapter analyzes how from different transnational and gendered positions different writers created narratives of exile and enclosure that offer unhomely visions of home/land. The third chapter examines incest and illegitimacy as tropic expressions of anxiety about the legitimacy of Galician and Spanish nationalisms, particularly in the works of M. Valladares, Pardo Bazán and X. Rodríguez López. In the final chapter I argue that the domestic violence so common in Galician narrative reveals the violence—colonial, cultural, sexual, and economic—implicit in the creation and perpetuation of Galician and Spanish national identities. Revealing the multiplicity of pre-national Iberian identities, these analyses offer historical legitimacy to a variety of linguistic and gendered post-national identities today. iii To my mom and dad, JoAnn and Jim.     Finisterra, XXXIII, 65, 1998, pp. 117-128 SUBSTATE NATION-BUILDING AND GEOGRAPHICAL REPRESENTATIONS OF ‘THE OTHER’ IN GALICIA, SPAIN (1860-1936) JACOBO GARCÍA -ÁLVAREZ 1 Abstract: The ‘social construction’ of otherness and, broadly speaking, the ideological-political use of ‘external’ socio-spatial referents have become important topics in contemporary studies on territorial identities, nationalisms and nation-building processes, geography included. After some brief, introductory theoretical reflections, this paper examines the contribution of geographical discourses, arguments and images, sensu lato , in the definition of the external socio-spatial identity referents of Galician nationalism in Spain, during the period 1860-1936. In this discourse Castile was typically represented as ‘the other’ (the negative, opposition referent), against which Galician identity was mobilised, whereas Portugal, on the one hand, together with Ireland and the so-called ‘Atlantic-Celtic nationalities’, on the other hand, were positively constructed as integrative and emulation referents. Así, vestigios prehistóricos representados en mámoas y petroglifos, como en Maus de Salas y PresPres- queira; restos romanos de calzadas, mansiones, miliarios y puentes, en Portoquintela, Lovios, San Xoan de Río y Trives; iglesias románicas y góticas impregnadas de oraciones y plegarias; cruceiros y petos de ánimas representativos del sentir de Galicia; monasterios con notas can- tarinas en sus coros, como Santa María de Oseira; viñedos y bolos graníticos; y manantiales termales emanando sin parar sus vapores mágicos, en Laias, Baños de Molgas, Arnoia y las charcas al lado del Miño. Pero Ourense, aparte de la visibilidad de lo enunciado, tiene además un componente profun- do, llamémosle intelectual-artístico-espiritual que se sustancia en un elenco de mentes avanza- das que han sabido combinar lo cercano y próximo con todo un universo de lejanos horizontes. El halagüeño título de La Atenas de Galicia del que hacen gala quienes practican el deporte de la ourensanía se debe a este panel de hombres y mujeres que han destacado en los ámbitos más importantes de la cultura. La gaita y la zanfona de Faustino Santalices, los discursos de Otero Pedrayo, los grabados de Prieto Nespereira, los oleos de Quessada, las películas de Velo o los textos de Cuevillas son sólo una muestra de este mosaico ourensano de arte e intelectualidad.

Contudo, há um aspecto que, na minha opinião, não tem sido desenvolvido com a devida atenção. Trata-se da sua relação com os intelectuais brasileiros. Baseando-me nos textos conhecidos do autor galego –nas revistas que dirigiu, ou naquelas em que participou em Espanha e na América, e nos livros que traduziu– tenciono fazer um inventário das ocasiões em que o mundo brasileiro está presente na sua produção. Para isso, tenho analisado, além das revistas espanholas em que colaborou, as revistas publicadas no México, Romance e em Buenos Aires, De Mar a Mar e Correo Literario, para chegar à conclusão de que não são poucas as ocasiões nas quais a presença brasileira aparece em destaque. 1. LORENZO VARELA (LA HABANA, 1916 - MADRID, 1978) Lorenzo Varela, nome artístico pelo qual é conhecido Xesús Manuel Lorenzo Varela Vázquez –sinónimo para alguns (Alonso Montero, 1977), para outros (Quintá García, 2005: 9-10) abreviatura do seu nome– nasceu no barco «La Navarre» (Salgado, 1995: 17), a caminho da emigração para La Habana, em 10 de Agosto de 1916. Abstract: In recent decades Western Europe has seen a dramatic increase in the political activity of ethnic groups demanding special institutional provisions to preserve their distinct identity. This mobilization represents the relative failure of centuries of assimilationist policies among some of the oldest nation-states and an unexpected outcome for scholars of modernization and nation-building. In its wake, the phenomenon generated a significant scholarship attempting to account for this activity, much of which focused on differences in economic growth as the root cause of ethnic activism. However, some scholars find these models to be based on too short a timeframe for a rich understanding of the phenomenon or too narrowly focused on material interests at the expense of considering institutions, culture, and psychology. In response to this broader debate, this study explores fifteen ethnic groups in three countries (France, Spain, and the United Kingdom) over the last two centuries as well as factoring in changes in Western European thought and institutions more broadly, all in an attempt to build a richer understanding of ethnic mobilization.
