Introduction to Ultimate

Module 1: Background

In this course you will be taught all the basics for the ultimate frisbee. Today the activity is to learn a little bit about the sport and watch some videos to get an idea of how it works.

What is Ultimate Frisbee?

Ultimate frisbee is a sport played between two teams, 7 players per team if it’s outdoors and 5 players if it’s indoors. It is a non- where the aim is to pass a frisbee from one end of the into the oppositions “endzone” without the disc being intercepted by the other team or touching the floor. The easiest way to picture how the game is played is to think of a crossover between and American , but the game is played with a disc instead of a ball

Where did it come from?

Ultimate frisbee was invented in 1968 by a group of students in Columbia high school in New Jersey. The sport has developed over the years to become one of the largest growing in the world. It is now played in many club teams across the UK as well as being introduced in many schools. Most universities have a team and there is even talk of it being added to future Olympics!

The Benefits of playing Ultimate Frisbee:

Ultimate frisbee is a sport which involves a lot of running, meaning it is very good for your physical health. It is also a self-refereed game meaning it encourages sportsmanship and fair play. In addition it is a very good sport for encouraging teamwork as you cannot advance the game without working as a team and passing to your teammates. Task:

There are two basic tasks for this week, they are only theory based this time but don’t worry they will be practical in later weeks! The first task is to watch some videos to have a better idea about what the sport is:

1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Gei3k15lIA – This is a highlight reel from the AUDL (American Ultimate Disc League) which is the biggest professional league of Ultimate frisbee 2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEKnqFBajiI – This is a short video explaining in basic terms what the sport is 3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egtE5rx886Y – This is a full game being played, you don’t need to watch the whole thing but watch a few points so you can see how a normal game is ran (game starts at 4 minutes 30 seconds) The second task is to do your own research into Ultimate Frisbee. Try to give yourself a basic idea on how it is played and how it can look.

Frisbee Terms:

Disc – This is said in the sport as opposed to frisbee as frisbee is just a brand of disc. Endzone – Where you catch the disc to score a point.

When you have read all this module and researched the sport yourself please email [email protected] or text 07591 915416 to record your achievement with
