Framing the genesis of innovative building processes and techniques within the context of Rome’s early expansion, he traces technological change in monumental construction in long-established urban centers and new Roman colonial cites founded in the 2nd century BCE in central Italy. Mogetta weaves together excavation data from both public monu- ments and private domestic architecture that previously have been studied in isolation. Highlighting the organization of the building industry, he also explores the political motivations and cultural aspirations of patrons of monumental architecture, reconstructing how they negotiated economic and logistical constraints by drawing from both local traditions and long- distance networks. By incorporating the available scientific evidence into the development of concrete technology, Mogetta also demonstrates the contributions of anonymous builders and contractors, shining a light on their ability to exploit locally available resources. marcello mogetta is a Mediterranean archaeologist whose research focuses on early Roman urbanism in Italy. He conducts primary fieldwork at the sites of Gabii (Gabii Project) and Pompeii (Venus Pompeiana Project), for which he has received multiple grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Loeb Classical Library Foundation, the AIA, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. He coordinates the CaLC-Rome Project, an international collaboration that applies 3D mod- eling and surface analysis to the life cycle of ceramic vessels from the Esquiline necropolis in Rome. -

The Politics of Death: An Examination of Aristocratic Male Funerals During the Late Republic of Rome Winner, Humanities, Best Overall Undergraduate Paper Author: Leah MacIntyre The Roman Republic during the first century BC was marked by multiple periods of instability and political chaos, as well numerous civil wars, which together brought about a major shift in the traditional sources for political support in the Roman world. The military, traditionally "the defender of state and architect of empire," was no longer the exclusive institution of the landed Roman citizen, but now incorporated poorer classes who were inspired by the opportunities a military career offered in regards to personal gain and wealth.[1] Significant military reforms, beginning with the consulship of Gaius Marius, created the context for unprecedented concentrations of military power within select individuals, hereto unheard of, as well as militarily elected and enforced political offices within Rome.[2] The system of individual competition, inherent in Roman politics and public life, had always begrudgingly accepted the importance of gaining and maintaining the support of the people, who were defined as "the arbiters of success or failure [as] they alone could validate structural change."[3] However, due to the structural upheaval which marked the late Republic, the role of this mass became increasingly more important and central in the political theatre of Rome. Within the chaos of this period, it is no surprise that public events were co-opted as political tools, particularly the funerals of elite Roman citizens. Funerals became intensely public and political events which, at times, resulted in the outbreak of lethal violence and rioting due to the calculated actions of politicians and their supporters. -

Attributed to the Bard William Shakespeare, the time of year in this spotlight was destined to become a precursor of foreboding: “Beware the Ides of March,” a soothsayer said to Julius Caesar in the play. From another source the famous historical exchange went like this: Caesar (jokingly): The Ides of March are come. Seer: Aye, Caesar, but not gone. Picture the scene: the well-to-do swanning around in togas, slaves in tow; chariots running over plebs at random in the streets; centurians rolling dice; senators whispering and plotting overthrows behind closed doors while sharpening their daggers – this was ancient Rome on the 15th March 44 B.C. Jolly Julius was sauntering on his merry way to the Theatre of Pompey, blissfully unaware that he was soon to be the star of the show as he was stabbed by no less than 60 conspirators; including his former mate Brutus to whom he commented with his dying breath: “Et tu, Brute?” And so, the Ides, for Caesar at least, turned out to be the last and worst day of his life. Maybe as well as the bucket, he also kicked off a new trend, because it wasn’t always like that. Prior to Jules messing with it, the ancient Roman calendar was complicated. Rather than numbering days of the month from the first to the last, some bright spark decided it was better to count backwards. He was probably trying to prove he was smarter than the average Roman; seeing as he understood his own calculations, whereas it was doubtful many others could. -

But very few rely on long term past perspectives, which could result in a precious opportunity to suggest innovative configurations related to specific institutional environments. On the other hand, historiography is a subject of growing interest in IS. Nonetheless, if many studies have already been carried out on the history of the technology or computer industries, very few have dealt with organizational IS history. This is regrettable, as it would give researchers a unique opportunity to understand long term IS dynamics and to grasp historical IS archetypes. Here, the author outlines a history of the IS of one of the oldest organizations in the world: the Roman Curia (the headquarters of the Catholic Church located within the Vatican). -

The Punishment of Tarpeia and Its Possible Iconographic Inspiration*
2017 ACTA UNIVERSITATIS CAROLINAE PAG. 43–55 PHILOLOGICA 2 / GRAECOLATINA PRAGENSIA THE PUNISHMENT OF TARPEIA AND ITS POSSIBLE ICONOGRAPHIC INSPIRATION* LENKA VACINOVÁ ABSTRACT The motif of the Punishment of Tarpeia is surprisingly rare in Roman visual arts. However, the surviving examples show iconographical unity and imply their common primary visual source of inspiration. The article is exploring the possible models considering the less obvious iconograph- ical similarities and resemblances in terms of content found in the Greek art. The cases of the infamous intriguer Dirce and traitor Dolon are dis- cussed, as well as the remarkable resemblances found on some images of the Death of Caeneus. While the latter indicates the inspiration based on free associations and the similar circumstances of death of the both protagonists, Dolon and Dirce seem to influence the creator of the icono- graphic scheme of the Punishment of Tarpeia in a more straight way. Keywords: iconography; Tarpeia; betrayal; punishment; exposure; nudity Roman art is abundant in the iconographic paradigms borrowed from Greek visual arts, as well as in scenes with no such close and apparent parallels. The story of Tarpeia ’ s treachery and her punishment seems to belong to the latter group. The tragic tale of a girl who, enchanted by the golden bracelets of the enemy, betrays Rome to the Sabine king Titus Tatius under the promise of “what the Sabines wear on their left hands” and who instead meets her fate under a pile of their shields (which the Sabines unfortunately also carry on their left arms), is dealt with both by Greek and Latin authors in a quite different versions.1 On the contrary, the scarcely preserved depictions of Tarpeia seem to share almost the same iconographic scheme. -

It seems that almost every city and town with any pretensions to importance within the Roman Empire had, as part of its suite of civic amenities, a macellum. This building normally sat alongside the forum and basilica, providing a place in which a market could be held. Why then did Rome, the foremost and most populous city of the Empire, have only one, or very possibly two, at any one time? Why did it not form one of the sides to the Forum in Rome as it did in other cities? Was the macellum intended to provide the only market place for the entire population of Rome? These questions highlight the problems about the role of the macellum within the market and retail structure of the City of Rome. Macella Before discussing the problems raised by the macella in Rome it may be beneficial to give an overview of their development and to describe the buildings themselves. In her book, called Macellum, Claire De Ruyt 2outlines the problems and arguments related to the origins of the word and the form the buildings took. One part of the debate is to the origin of the word macellum itself, Greek, Latin or even Semitic beginnings have been advanced.
