53 Strength and Conditioning Staff Johnny Long Head Strength and Conditioning Coach

Johnny Long is into his fourth year as leader of the Tennessee fitness program, holding the title of Head Strength and Conditioning Coach. Long has used a solid teaching regimen to climb the coaching ladder at UT. The former Olympic-cal- iber weightlifter began as a graduate assistant for the Vols conditioning staff in 1994, and then advanced to the position of Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach two years later. He was named associate coach in 1999 before taking his current post. He now holds the title of “Certified Collegiate Mentor” for strength and condition- ing coaches accross the country. In January 2004, Long served as strength coach for the Las Vegas All-American Classic all-star game. Tennessee’s emphasis on a strong fitness program is epitomized in Long, whose background in weight training underpinned his belief in the link between condition- ing and athletics success. Long sets high goals for his charges but makes the stan- dards attainable with realistic workout programs. He is credited by head coach Phillip Fulmer with making physical fitness a basic component of Volunteers football. Long began his weightlifting career at the age of 8 in his hometown of Baton Rouge, La. He competed for 16 years on the Olympic-caliber level before an injury halted his career at 24 years old. All told, Long competed in numerous Junior Olympics and national weightlifting events before coaching and instruction, some- thing he began at age 15, came to be his top priority. Long also played linebacker and fullback at Parkview High School before a knee injury ended that career. By then, he was well into his 15-year coaching career at the Regional Olympic Training Center in Baton Rouge. Graduation from Southeastern Louisiana University in 1994 sparked his move to Knoxville for the graduate assistant’s position with the Vols. Since then, he has played a key role in Tennessee’s consistent improvement on the football field during the Phillip Fulmer Era, including two SEC titles and the 1998 national championship. Long is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association, the College Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association, the U.S. Weightlifting Federation and the American Football Coaches Associa-tion. Last year, he initiated a "Letterman's Reunion Weekend," at the football season opener that included retro jerseys for the Vols as well as invitations to all former Tennessee football players and their families to return to Knoxville for a weekend of get-togethers and fellowship. This year, Hamilton plans to continue the tradition by inviting all former basketball lettermen back for the football opener against UAB. All part of Hamilton's new customer service platform. Another major focus for Hamilton is ensuring UT has the facilities it needs to compete for championships. In the fall of 2004, Hamilton unveiled a master plan to prepare Neyland Stadium for the next 75 years. One key goal of the master plan was to find a way to fund the renovations without financially impacting the general fan. To fund the future of Neyland Stadium and the continuance of Tennessee's prominence on the national stage, sev- eral revenue streams have been devised to lower the economic impact for the common fan. The renovations will be completed in five phases begin- ning after the 2005 season during the off-seasons to alleviate inconven- iences on fans. Hamilton is also focused on other facility projects as the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center, a new soccer stadium, a new softball stadium, as well as plans for improvements to Thompson-Boling Arena and Stadium.
