Tennessee Notes TENNESSEE POSTGAME NOTES Kentucky at Tennessee N o v. 25, 2006 Neyland Stadium Knoxville, Tenn. Defense pitches second half shutout as Vols comeback from fourth-quarter deficit to win for fourth time this sea - son Noting Tennessee z Tennessee improved to 9-3 (5-3 SEC); Kentucky fell to 7-5 (4-4 SEC). z The Vols entered the game ranked No. 19 in the Associated Press poll and No. 21 in the USA Today rankings; Kentucky was unranked. z The win closed out the regular season for the Vols, who finished second in the SEC Eastern Division and will next play in a bowl game yet to be determined. Kentucky also closed out its regular season and is bowl-eligible. Tennessee-Kentucky Series z Tennessee leads the all-time series vs. Kentucky 70-23-9 (.730) dating to 1893. z Today’s contest marked the fourth meeting between UT head coach Phillip Fulmer and Wildcats coach Rich Brooks. Fulmer remained perfect against Brooks (4-0) and has never lost to Kentucky in his 15 seasons at the helm. Phillip Fulmer’s Record z Tennessee head coach Phillip Fulmer’s record now stands at 137-40 (.774) in 15 seasons with the Vols. z Fulmer now owns a 14-0 record against Kentucky, an 89-29 mark against SEC teams, and a 55-17 record against the SEC Eastern Phillip Fulmer Division. The 7-yard takedown was the first of Bolden’s career. z Turk McBride wrapped up Rafael Little for a loss on 4th-and-3 with just less than 11 minutes to play to stuff a late Erik Ainge s 2006 Kentucky scoring drive inside the UT 30 to keep the second-half shutout alive. z The defense allowed the Wildcats into the red zone five times but Kentucky only managed to score 13 points on those Game-By-Game attempts. The defense forced turnover on downs on both of UK’s fourth quarter red zone attempts. z Redshirt freshman linebacker Rico McCoy made the first start of his career in place of Jerod Mayo, who missed the Passing Tot als game with an injured left knee. McCoy finished with a career-high nine tackles. The Walter Camp Coach of the Year is selected by the nation’s 125 Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors. Cutcliffe is the first Duke coach to receive the award, and the first honoree from the ACC since 2001 (Ralph Friedgen, Maryland). Under Cutcliffe’s direction, the 20th-ranked Blue Devils have set a school record with 10 victories and earned their first-ever berth in the Dr. Pepper ACC Championship Game. Duke clinched the Coastal Division title and championship game berth with a 27-25 victory over in-state rival North Carolina on November 30. Duke (10-2, 6-2 in the Coastal Division) will face top-ranked Florida State (12-0) on Saturday, December 7 in Charlotte, N.C. The Blue Devils enter the game with an eight-game winning streak – the program’s longest since 1941. In addition, the Blue Devils cracked the BCS standings for the first time this season, and were a perfect 4-0 in the month of November (after going 1-19 in the month from 2008 to 2012). (JFI) shined a light on a longtime Ambassador who has championed their cause. In early March 1998, a small group of youth and representatives from The Jason Foundation, a non- profit whose mission is to raise awareness and prevention efforts in youth and young adult suicide, found themselves in front of Coach Phillip Fulmer. The group of young people, who were part of JFI’s Youth Board, had written to Coach Fulmer about The Jason Foundation and its mission, asking him to consider being their first National Spokesperson. Since JFI was a mere six months old and no one outside of the greater Nashville area had heard of them, it was a stretch even asking someone to be a national spokesperson… but that did not stop this passionate group of youth from making their ask or Coach Fulmer inviting the group to visit him about this opportunity. “I remember that day like it was yesterday,” Clark Flatt, President of JFI and Jason’s dad, commented. “I had never met Coach Fulmer, and I realized what it would mean to JFI and our mission if we could somehow convince him to accept this role as our National Spokesperson, so I practiced my speech for the entire trip from Hendersonville, Tennessee to Coach Fulmer’s office at the University of Tennessee. WHEREAS, steeped in a tradition of gridiron excellence, with the strains of "Rocky Top" ringing triumphantly in their delighted ears, our beloved Tennessee Volunteers have fulfilled their long time goal of winning the NCAA National Championship; and WHEREAS, on one of the most historic days in state history, January 4, 1999, this quest for college football superiority was achieved, much to the joy of Tennessee faithful throughout Orange Land, as Coach Fulmer and the University of Tennessee Volunteers defeated the tough Florida State University Seminoles to become 1998 NCAA National Champions; and WHEREAS, ranked 10th in the nation at the beginning of the season, this Orange-clad cast of players quickly established themselves as a team of destiny with an exciting come-from- behind 34-33 victory on the road against the Syracuse Orangemen; behind the running of Jamal Lewis and Tee Martin the Vols emerged victorious as Winchester native Jeff Hall kicked a last- second 27-yard field goal in a thrilling game; and WHEREAS, Hall was one of many heroes for the Vols in the second game against Florida as they won a titanic battle with the Gators, 20-17; a Shawn Bryson 57-yard touchdown dash, Tee Martin-to-Peerless Price touchdown pass, and swarming defense, led by linebacker HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 35 001763 -1- Al Wilson sealed the Vols' overtime win
