NCFAA CONTRIBUTIONS TO COLLEGE FOOTBALL AWARD

The National College Football Awards Association created the Contributions to College Football Award to recognize exceptional contributions to the sport. The award is presented to an individual who has been closely associated with college football as a player, coach, administrator, media personality or other position attendant to the game.

Following are the distinguished recipients of the award, which will be presented at The Home Depot College Football Awards again this year at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.

Criteria The Biletnikoff Award candidate must be an active collegiate receiver (any player who receives a pass, regardless of position) at an NCAA Division I FBS school; he must not have been declared ineligible to participate by the NCAA or the candidate’s school at the time of any vote of the national selection committee; he must display leadership and self-discipline and have a significant, positive impact on his team’s success; and he must display a commitment always to play at his best. Additional Information The Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation, the creator and sponsor of the Biletnikoff Award, has presented the award for all 25 years of the award’s existence. The Foundation has provided substantial scholarships to hundreds of North Florida high school seniors who have overcome significant mental, emotional, physical or environmental barriers to achieve at the highest academic and extracurricular levels. The scholarship recipients attend colleges, vocational schools, and universities throughout the United States. The Foundation will award scholarships and benefits totaling over $850,000 during the coming year alone, as it did in 2017.

The Football Writers Association of America, a non-profit organization founded in 1941, consists of more than 1,400 men and women who cover college football. The membership includes journalists, broadcasters and publicists, as well as key executives in all the areas that involve the game. The FWAA works to govern areas that include gameday operations, major awards and its annual All-America team.

Additional Information Each year, the Davey O’Brien Foundation recognizes student-athletes for their achievements both on and off the field. Through its High School Scholarship Award, the Foundation recognizes an outstanding high school senior student-athlete in the -Fort Worth Metroplex with a $30,000 scholarship. Finalists for the High School Award receive $2,500 scholarships. Since 1977, the Foundation has given more than $1 million to deserving student-athletes across the country.

Additional Information The PwC SMU Athletic Forum produces four annual luncheons and the Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet. Proceeds benefit athletic programs at SMU. In addition to the Doak Walker Award, the Forum annually presents the PwC Doak Walker Legends Award. The award recognizes an individual whose extraordinary collegiate football career has been bolstered by an exemplary record of leadership in the community.

Named After … Gene Stallings, one of Texas A&M’s Junction Boys and an Aggie legend as a player and coach. He also had coaching stints in the NFL and as of the Phoenix Cardinals and head coach of the 1992 National Champion Alabama Crimson Tide. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 2011. The title he is most proud of: Father to the late Johnny Stallings, who had Down syndrome. Stallings has been a proponent for and voice of the special needs community since the early 1960’s, when parents shipped kids with Down syndrome to state institutions (Gene refused to do that with Johnny). Coach Stallings helped start Rise School of Dallas in 1998.

Named After … PaulHornungAward.com Paul Hornung, a native and lifelong resident of Louisville and member of the @HornungAward College and Pro Football Halls of Fame. Hornung is considered by many the most versatile player in the history of college and pro football. He won the 1956 Heisman Trophy at quarterback for Notre Dame and was the number one pick in the 1957 NFL Draft. He played every position in the backfield during his career with the Irish, where he also punted, kicked, returned kicks and played . While in the NFL, Hornung was a multi-threat offensive back and prolific kicker. He was a member of four NFL championship teams as an All-Pro halfback for the and led the NFL in scoring in three seasons (1959-60-61), set the single-season scoring record in 1960 with 176 points and was named the league’s MVP following the 1961 season.

Voting Procedures The mission of the Paul Hornung Award is to recognize and reward versatile, high-level performers in major college football (Football Bowl Subdivision team members); to help preserve the legacy of one of Louisville’s native sons and sports icons; and to promote Louisville as a great sports town. A panel of college football experts creates a watch list of approximately 50 players. Additionally, Louisville Sports Commission staff and outside experts select and recognize outstanding performers each week during the course of the season. After Week 12 of the regular season, a panel of college football experts creates a candidate list of approximately 10-15 players based on performance during the season. The Paul Hornung Award Selection Committee chooses the finalists and ultimately the winner from the candidate list. For the actual selection, a 17-member Selection Committee votes for finalists in mid-November. Fan voting powered by Texas Roadhouse accounts for the 18th vote. The Selection Committee chooses the winner in early December from among the finalists after they compete in bowl games.

The center with the most first team votes will be determined the winner. If there is a tie with first team votes, then the center with the most second team votes will win. If there is still a tie, the winner will be determined by a majority vote from the Rimington Trophy committee.

Additional Information All proceeds from the Rimington Trophy aid in the fight against Cystic Fibrosis. To date, the Rimington Trophy has raised over $3.9 million for the cystic fibrosis community. In addition to the award for the most outstanding center at the Division I FBS level, the Rimington Trophy committee also recognizes the top centers from Division I FCS, Division II, Division III and the NAIA. Additional Information Uplifting Athletes is a nonprofit organization that inspires the rare disease community with hope through the power of sport. Our national network of chapters is run by current football student-athletes.

What makes Uplifting Athletes unique is that our chapter network is run by current football student-athletes, providing them with an opportunity to gain practical job skills while learning how to leverage their assets and abilities to make a positive and lasting impact.

A rare disease is one that affects fewer than 200,000 Americans and consequently lacks financial incentive to make and market new treatments. Each chapter adopts one out of approximately 7,000 rare diseases (such as MS, ALS, cystic fibrosis, pancreatic cancer, etc.) – giving the football student-athletes an opportunity to make the cause relevant to them. We currently have chapters at 25 different universities.

The success of this initial effort, college football’s lack of a cause-marketing relationship and the overwhelming needs of the rare disease community has led to the evolution of Uplifting Athletes. We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit with four primary service programs – outreach, research, education and advocacy. The benefits to the college football student-athletes include the aspects of professional development and social engagement. We are currently expanding our network of university chapters within select major football programs. University chapters of Uplifting Athletes are set-up as registered student organizations, run by current football student-athletes and benefit a rare disease that is relevant to their team. Each chapter plans and hosts special events to help make their rare disease more popular.
