By Nikita Jaeger The Bingling Temple, located 35 km west of Yongjing County in Gansu province, is one of the most famous religious attractions in China. Among the sterling features tourists love to explore is its collection of grottoes sculptured with massive Buddha statutes about 27 m tall, all dating back to the Tang dynasty. The caves, located along the Yellow River, have a natural appeal. The exact location is on Small Jishu Hill to the north of the spot where the Yellow river drains into the Liujiaxia reservoir.

Of all these caves, the Thousand Buddha Caves are the most famous, with artistic items of great value inside the Bingling temple. In 2014, this was declared a world heritage site. In the Tibetan language, the word Bingling means ‘ten thousand caves’. The construction of the Thousand Buddha caves started at the time of the western Jin dynasty, dated 265– 316 A.D. Since then, several dynasties have made contributions to the cave constructions.

Currently, there are six hundred and ninety-four stone statues, eighty- two clay sculptures, one hundred and eighty-three niches, and nearly nine hundred murals, providing an engaging visual treat for tourists. All these artistic caves are well preserved. The temple caves extend almost two hundred metres on Dasi Gully.
