Press Release Celebrities Shine at The Venetian Macao for Asia Rainbow TV Awards Integrated resort brings another star-studded awards show to Macao (Macao, June 26, 2014) – The first Asian television awards show presented by mainland China, the Asia Rainbow TV Awards, were held in Macao for the first time Thursday night, hosted at The Venetian Theatre. With SONIQ as the exclusive title sponsor, and The Venetian® Macao as special sponsor, the Asia Rainbow TV Awards – known as Asia's version of Hollywood's Emmy Awards – is the first awards show for the television industry to be held at The Venetian Macao. Celebrities arriving on the red carpet for the awards show included actors Lee Li-Chun, Hawick Lau and Jerry Lee, and actresses Tongshu Yang, Dandan Song and Guitian Sun. Crowds of screaming fans clamoured to get a view of the famous faces as the glamorous luminaries captured everyone’s attention with their star power. With nearly 400 nominees hailing from 14 countries, 80 awards were given across 27 categories, including awards for Best Actor/Actress, Best Scriptwriter, and Best Actor/Actress Comedy. “Sands China brings the best of the best to Macao, so it is with great pleasure that we are hosting Asia Rainbow TV Awards, an outlet for recognising Asia’s top television talent,” said Olaf Gueldner, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Sands China Ltd. “Our properties are the place to be for seeing the brightest stars, as our multi-tiered entertainment strategy continues to cement Macao’s position as one of the region’s top entertainment destinations for superstars events and to promote the city as a world centre of tourism and leisure.” The awards show was broadcast via 23 television stations to audiences across mainland China, reaching an estimated audience of half a billion viewers. -

Zhang Ziyi and China’s Celebrity–Philanthropy Scandals Elaine Jeffreys, University of Technology Sydney Zhang Ziyi is arguably China’s most famous female celebrity, being ranked after basketball player, Yao Ming, at number two on Forbes’s (mainland) China Celebrity List in 2009 and 2010 (‘2010 Forbes China Celebrity List’ 2010).1 Forbes issued its inaugural list of China’s top 100 power-ranking celebrities in 2004, demonstrating the growing importance of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in global cultural markets. As with the US list, China’s celebrities are ranked by combining income from salaries and endorsements with the number of times they appear in various media formats (Jeffreys & Edwards 2010: 2). Zhang Ziyi rose to international fame via her starring role in Ang Lee’s martial arts movie, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000). A global cinematic phenomenon in 2000 and 2001, Crouching Tiger earned more than US$200 million worldwide, becoming the most commercially successful foreign-language film in US history and the first Chinese-language film to find a broad American audience (Klein 2004: 18). Since then, Zhang has gone on to enjoy critical acclaim for her starring roles in Hollywood films, such as Memoirs of a Geisha (dir. Rob Marshall 2005), and in Chinese-language blockbusters, such as Hero (dir. Zhang Yimou 2002) and House of Flying Daggers (dir. Zhang Yimou 2004). Voted as one of the ‘most beautiful people in the world’ by many fashion and celebrity magazines, she has appeared as the ‘face’ of 1 Forbes extended its China list in 2010 to include celebrities from Taiwan and Hong Kong, as well as mainland China. -

The dissemination and localization of anime in China: Case study on the Chinese mobile video game Onmyoji Wuqian Qian The Department of Asian, Middle Eastern and Turkish Studies Master Program in Asian Studies, 120 hp Autumn term 2016 Supervisor: Jaqueline Berndt English title: Professor Abstract In the 2017 Chinese Gaming Industry Report, a new type of video games called 二次 元 game is noted as a growing force in the game industry. Onmyoji is one of those games produced by Netease and highly popular with over 200 million registered players in China alone. 二次元 games are characterized by Japanese-language dubbing and anime style in character design. However, Onmyoji uses also Japanese folklore, which raises two questions: one is why Netease chose to make such a 二次元 game, the other why a Chinese game using Japanese folklore is so popular among Chinese players. The attractiveness of an exotic culture may help to explain the latter, but it does not work for the first. Thus, this thesis implements a media studies perspective in order to substantiate its hypothesis that it is the dissemination of anime in China that has made Onmyoji possible and successful. Unlike critics who regard anime as an imported product from Japan which is different from domestic Chinese animation and impairs its development, this study pays attention to the interrelation between media platforms and viewer (or user) demographics, and it explores the positive influence of Japanese anime on the Chinese creative industry, implying the feasibility of anime or 二次元 products to be created in other countries than Japan. -
