Indeed it can be summarized in one diagram: figure 1.1. Before 1800 income per person – the food, clothing, heat, light, housing, and furnishings available per head - varied across socie- ties and epochs. But there was no upward trend. A simple but powerful mechanism explained in this book, the Malthusian Trap, kept incomes within a range narrow by modern standards. -

Without underestimating the significance of security and conflict within the structure of the Israeli state, in this thesis the Arab–Jewish relationship is viewed as just one important cleavage within the Israeli state. Instead of focusing on this single cleavage, this thesis explores the complex structure of cleavages at the heart of the Israeli political system. It introduces the concept of a ‘cleavage pyramid’, whereby divisions are of different saliency to different groups. At the top of the pyramid is division between Arabs and Jews, but one rung down from this are the intra-Jewish divisions, be they religious, ethnic or political in nature. In the case of Shas, the religious and ethnic elements are the most salient. The secular–religious divide is a key fault line in Israel and one in which ultra-orthodox parties like Shas are at the forefront. They and their politically secular counterparts form a key division in Israel, and an exploration of Shas is an insightful means of exploring this division further, its history and causes, and how these groups interact politically. -

New history. We understand the new history generally in the same way as the representatives of Marxist history. It is a history of establishment of new social-economic formation – capitalism, which, in difference to the previous formations, uses the economic impelling and the big machine production. The most important classes are bourgeoisie and hired workers, in the last time the number of the employees in the sphere of service increases. The peasants decrease in number, the movement of peasants into towns takes place; the remaining peasants become the independent farmers, who are involved into the ware and money economy. In the political sphere it is an epoch of establishment of the republican system, which is profitable first of all for the bourgeoisie, with the time the political rights and liberties are extended for all the population. In the spiritual plan it is an epoch of the upper mental, or causal (later lower intuitive) plan, the humans discover the laws of development of the world and man, the traditional explanations of religion already do not suffice. The time of the swift development of technique (Satan was loosed out of his prison, according to Revelation 20.7), which causes finally the global ecological problems. -

The state was formed on November 1956 by combining various Malayalam speaking regions. From the early days Kerala is famous for trade, particularly for spices which attracted traders from different parts of the world. As per Sumerian records Kerala is referred as the ‘Garden of spices’ or ‘The spice garden of India’. The state has attracted Babylonians, Assyrians, Egyptians, Arabs, Greeks and Romans. Merchants from West Asia and Southern Europe established coastal ports and settlements in Kerala. Jewish connection with Kerala was started in the tenth Century B C. The Jews are an ethnic group who settled first in Muziris, the earliest seaport in Kerala which was known as ‘Little Jerusalem’. They came to Kerala during the period of King Solomon. It is believed that King Solomon had visited Kerala for trade purposes. From the very early days the country Kerala was known to the ancient Jews. In the 6th century BC the Jews came to Kodungaloor in order to escape from the Babylonian captivity of Nebuchednezzar. In 580 B C the Babylonian Empire conquered Yehudah (Judah), the Southern region of ancient Israel. After 50 years later, the Persian Empire (ancient Iran) conquered the Babylonian Empire and allowed the Jews to return home to the land of Israel. -

The Hebrew date corresponds to 1269, making it the oldest Hebrew text in India. How did this Hebrew writing reach the quiet, verdant village of Chennamangalam? The Jews of Cochin have lived on the Malabar coast for centuries, some say from the time of King Solomon. Others claim that the Jews arrived in the first century A.D. after the destruction of the Second Temple. In a popular Christian tradition, St. Thomas arrived on the Malabar coast and was invited to the wedding of the daughter of the King of Cranganore. There, St. Thomas sang a Hebrew bridal song which none of the company could Gathering of the Chennamangalam understand, except a Jewish community, 1952 Jewish flute girl. After the wedding, St. Thomas retired to the Jewish quarter in Cranganore, where he took up residence. This local Christian narrative confirms the existence of Jews on the Malabar coast as early as the first century. Local tradition also has it that in 1341, after the harbour of Cranganore silted up, the Jews moved from Cranganore to Chennamangalam and other centres. Cranganore was also known as Shingly. To this day, the Jews of Chennamangalam, like the other Cochin Jews, follow the Sefardi liturgy, but pray according to the "Shingly rite". -

For Solo exhibition catalog: “Faces: Weaving Indian Jewish Narratives” at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (Prince of Wales Museum) in Mumbai India. (Sept 30 - Oct 20 2013) Pitching One’s Tent: Faces within the Indian Jewish Narrative Siona Benjamin’s most recent work, which has grown out of a Fullbright project, offers imagery consistent with her paintings throughout her distinguished career. Her world is transcultural and transnational. She grew up as a Jew in India, in a Mumbai predominantly divided between Hindu and Muslim cultures, and she attended schools that were variously Catholic and Zoroastrian. Even as a Jew she comes from a tradition within an array of diverse traditions—a Bene Israel, not a Sephardi or Ashkenazi or Mizrahi or Romaniot.1 She also grew up as a girl in a culture still finding its way toward healthy treatment of women. So her childhood made the interweave of diverse threads of tradition into a colorful tapestry—and the asking of questions regarding definitions and boundaries—an inevitable part of her reality. She and her generation gradually dispersed, mostly to Israel and to America, while her parents remained in India. She came to the American Midwest and then to New Jersey, both locations part of an America with its own still-unanswered questions of regarding diversity of religion, ethnicity, gender and race. Her painting reflects her own diversity: the tradition of Indian and Pakistani miniature painting, particularly that sponsored by the Mughals, but also the Persian miniature tradition that fed into Mughal art as well as non-Mughal Islamic art and also 18th-century Rajput—Hindu-based— Northern Indian art.
