Resumo: O presente trabalho tem por intenção identificar e discutir os elementos nacionalistas e universalistas presentes no discurso e na prática do Esperanto. Para isso, tomamos como ponto de partida uma descrição do Esperanto, em seus principais aspectos: enquanto idioma internacional, filosofia e cultura. A partir daí, mostrarmos que, em muitos casos, seu caráter internacional toma por base argumentos similares aos de movimentos nacionalistas, além de mesclar ideais humanistas com outros típicos do atual relativismo cultural. É a partir desses discursos, aparentemente conflitantes, que o Esperanto busca se afirmar como língua internacional auxiliar, seguindo a concepção de que seus falantes são cidadãos do mundo. Na atualidade, em um contexto de globalização e H após a descolonização de grande parte dos países da América, Ásia e África, a comunicação internacional se torna cada vez mais necessária, ao mesmo tempo em que a aversão de muitos povos a aprenderem línguas estrangeiras também cresce. -

Certainly Scotland’s poets have shown that they are capable of versifying in more than one language. Of the leading poets of our time we could mention as outstanding at least three, all of whom wrote in a different language from the other two: Somhairle Maclean (Gaelic), Hugh MacDiarmid (Lallans) and Edwin Muir (English). To these we must add a further one: William Auld, one of the most distinguished poets – if not the most – in Esperanto. It is worth noting that both Maclean and Auld were nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature. That it was not, in fact, awarded to them may partly be due to the fact that both (like MacDiarmid) wrote in what many would regard as an obscure tongue. Although (unlike speakers of Gaelic and Scots) Esperantists can be found in almost every country in the world, they are generally thin on the ground, and not all are readers or appreciators of poetry. -

A short Historical Sketch has been prefixed, giving a concise view of the rise and progress of the town, with its harbours, commerce and manu- factures, together with the principal causes that have promoted its present maritime importance and manufacturing enterprise. In order to render the work as generally useful as possible, a Register has also been prefixed, forming a complete arrangement of corporate bodies, public institutions, religious associations, liteiary, scientific and other societies, to- gether with copious shipping and other lists connected with the town. In procuring the various details, the Publisher has availed himself of every means of information in his power. To the magistrates, the clergy, merchants, ship-owners^ and office-bearers of public institutions, he offers his respectful thanks for their obliging and valuable assistance. Interlinguistics and Esperanto studies Paths to the scholarly literature Detlev Blanke Humboldt University Berlin A significant number of publications on interlinguistics and Esperanto studies would be improved if their authors had a more thorough knowledge of the significant scholarly literature. However, it is often difficult even for the specialist to find his or her way among current and older scholarly studies dealing with various aspects of planned languages ([“artificial”] world [auxiliary] languages). The current study is intended to facilitate access to the scholarly literature by drawing the reader’s attention to the myriad sources of material worthy of use by the researcher. Particularly included, in addition to monographs, are such sources as anthologies, Festschriften, conference proceedings, university dissertations, and planned-language periodicals both current and older. Especially valuable for up-to-date information are general and specialized interlinguistics bibliographies, bibliographically oriented bulletins, and periodically published international bibliographies with sections on interlinguistics. Yielding most information is the bibliography on modern languages and literatures published by the Modern Language Association (MLA) in New York, which registers the newest materials annually. Specialized libraries, more and more easily consulted on-line, provide large quantities of materials worthy of research. The Internet is playing a growing role in making literature in the field available. Scholarly literature in interlinguistics and Esperanto studies is steadily growing. Finding one’s way around it is increasingly difficult even for experienced researchers, especially if the goal is a literature search on specific problems. For those new to the field, the situation is particularly complicated if the goal is to produce something original. -

Kiam li renkontas vorton, kiun li ne konas, aŭ kies signifon li ne povas diveni laŭ la kunteksto, nur tiam li sin turnu al la sekcio "Vortaro", kaj pere de la klarigo tie donita li klopodu kompreni la sencon de la vorto en ĝia aktuala kunteksto. Nur en okazo de absoluta bezono, aŭ eventuale por kontroli sian koncepton pri la signifo de la vorto, li sin turnu al nacilingva vortaro. (La difinoj en tiu ĉi libro ne celas esti kompletaj kaj definitivaj — tio ja estas la tasko de la vortaristoj; ili celas nur ebligi al la studanto kompreniĝon pri la kuntekste uzita vorto.) La celo de tiu ĉi agmaniero estas: liberiĝi kiel eble plej komplete el la katenoj de la nacilingva pensado. Kompreneble, se temas pri arbnomoj (ekzemple) li eble devos konsulti vortaron antaŭ ol scii, pri kiu arbo fakte temas. Finkompreninte la legaĵon, li povas fari la lingvajn ekzercojn de tiu "paŝo". En la komeneo mi supozas ĉe la studanto posedon de la gramatiko kaj elementan vortprovizon de ĉ. 700 vortoj (precize, tiuj en “Esperanto - A New Approach”; sed ĝenerale tiuj vortoj estos pli-malpli komunaj al ĉiuj studintoj en elementa kurso). En tiu ĉi libro estas klarigataj 1.682 vortoj; kun la elementa vortaro, do, la studanto en la fino devus disponi pri ĉ. 2.400 radikoj. Post la unuaj lecionoj, la sperta esperantisto eble rimarkos, ke kelkfoje la vortprovizo de la legaĵo ne ĉiam kongruas kun tiu de la ekzercoj; kelkfoie, ekzemple, vorto enkondukita en la ekzercoj aperas nur poste en la antaŭlegaĵa vortaro. -

As a linguistic phenomenon, that is, a language in continuous use for almost a century but without national roots, it has also had little systematic study, though a considerable literature cn the subject exists in Esperanto itself. There are now several native speakers of Esperanto, who might merit special investigation. It would also be useful to have more extensive study of psychological and sociological aspects of the Esperanto speech community. Esperanto has an extensive literature, original and translated, little known by outside scholars. There is also a need for the study of Esperanto's practical application and its potential as a solution to international language problems. Some attention bas been given to the pedagogy of Esperanto, but more work is needed. The language is seldom mentioned in major reference works or adequately represented in libraries, and for these reasons it is often overlooked by scholars. -

ABSTRACT Studies of interlinguistics written in ethnic languages – particularly research on planned languages – are often insufficiently grounded in the essential scholarly literature. English-language studies frequently fail to consider scholarly literature in German, Russian, French, and other languages. An important part of this specialized literature is written in planned languages (particularly Esperanto) and all too frequently remains unknown. For lack of knowledge of actual planned-language praxis, misunderstandings arise, for example on the relations between a language and a language project, a language and a language community, language and culture, expressibility in planned languages, and so on. For scientifically valid studies, specialized materials written in planned languages (approximately 95 % of them in Esperanto) are essential. This article provides an overview of the principal accessible sources of scholarly literature on interlinguistics and Esperantology and, inter alia, gives information on specialized libraries and archives, bibliographies, major monographs, anthologies, conferences and conference proceedings, university studies and dissertations, periodicals, internet materials, and handbooks
