Fenn Academy is a consortium of Northeast Ohio High Schools, Engineering Organizations and the Washkewicz College of Engineering at Cleveland State University FENN ACADEMY HIGHLIGHTS A REPORT ON THE ACADEMIC YEAR ACTIVITIES FOR 2013 - 2014 MESSAGE TO OUR STAKEHOLDERS The Fenn Academy is a partnership among Cleveland State University’s Washkewicz MISSION College of Engineering, local school districts, government agencies and corporations. While on campus, students participate in Engineering Activity Day events from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. or AND STUDENT SUPPORT 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Lunch is provided. Busing and substitute teacher costs are reimbursed up to $350. Our faculty, staff and students make our community outreach possible and provide stimulating lessons that engage visitors in fun, informative “hands on” activities.

The Fenn Academy also partners with the Nordson Corporation HEARTS for Jesus Christ Christian Education Institute, Ohio Department of Transportation a specialized school for home schooling families in Parker Hannifin grades 1-12. Additional schools are invited to join. Regency Construction Services, Incorporated Rockwell Automation In addition, our staff works with College Now, a college preparatory program for The Robbins Company high school students, and houses their summer camp in Fenn Hall. The College Turner Construction collaborates with the ACE Mentor Program of Cleveland, a nationwide program URS Corporation that prepares students for STEM careers. The Washkewicz College of Engineering provides matching scholarship funds for ACE students who enroll in engineering at CSU. The College also partnered with the Perry Initiative, a national program that encourages girls to pursue careers in engineering and medicine, that hosted their program in Fenn Hall.

Engineering staff, faculty and students routinely give engineering presentations to local high school and middle school students throughout the year, both on and off campus. The following list shows how many students were reached during this academic year. Routine follow-up is done with all students via email, Facebook, Twitter, postcards and telephone calls.

The Fenn Academy provided staffing and financial support for Women in Engineering Day on April 5, 2014, Lubrizol Corporation sponsored by the Engineering Dean’s Diversity Council. This first time event served 60 girls in grades 8-12 Lincoln Electric and their parents. Participants were welcomed by Dean Anette Karlsson, followed by a paper table building Middough Corporation competition, lab demos and a trip to the Great Lakes Science Center. Students also heard from keynote speaker Dr. Margaret Nazario from NASA and Dr. Sandra Magnus, a NASA astronaut. A college planning session was provided by Sandra English, Cooperative Education Manager. Washkewicz students from the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) also spoke to program participants. Women in Aviation also offered students career information.

The Washkewicz College of Engineering is currently seeking female engineers or female engineering students to encourage high school girls to pursue an engineering education and career. Assistance may take the form of mentoring, providing job shadowing, serving as guest speakers at special events, hosting company tours or offering to provide internships or cooperative education opportunities. Fenn Academy relies on donations from corporations, foundations, alumni and individuals to conduct year-round outreach and programming and to offer scholarships to attend CSU’s Washkewicz College of Engineering.

Named scholarships require an annual donation of at least $5,000 and are a great opportunity for individuals or companies to have a lasting impact on current or future engineering students.
