a musical play for children

The lights come up on an Italian piazza. The time is late eighteenth century . Stage left is the house of Gepetto. Inside is a workbench and a chair, Upstage of the house is a carnival wagon surrounded by trees. Stage left, there is a fountain large enough to have a ledge suitable for seating . Upstage, in the distance we can see the countryside filled with trees.

People are milling about the square doing what people do in a piazza.

(A light travels about the room and eventually stops on Pinocchio. The room takes on a blue glow and the Blue Fairy appears.)

He deserves to have his wish granted. So ... (she does what fairies do and lo and behold the puppet moves . )

Driver You ' re an anxious little bugger , aren ' t you?

Candl Sure am. Not that I didn ' t like the ride in your coach, because I did. It ' s a terrific•coach . I don ' t understand why you use donkeys to pull it though. Horses would be much faster.

Driver Oh , you'll understand soon enough.

Finocchio (to driver) You know , there's something very familiar about you .

Driver Lots of people say that. I guess I've just got one of those faces . Friendly and familiar.

Driver Mr . Fox, why don't you take this anxious young man right in while I talk to this other young man.

Finoc Do you come here a lot?

Cat Oh , off and on. We never stay very long though. We just drop off the little boys and then it' s back to ~he woods or to the town or wherever. Sometimes we don't even get this far . Sometimes we just put them on the coach.

Pinoc Why is he turning into a donkey?

Cat All the boys that come here turn into donkeys. It usually takes a little time , but it always happens.

Pinoc Why?

Cat I don't know . Sugar pollution 1 guess .

Pinoc You mean, if I stay here I'll turn into a donkey?

Cat i guess so.

Pinoc But I don ' t want to be a donkey.

Cat Well , I don't think you get a choice, Finocchio. Besides, it can ' t be that bad. I ' ve never heard any of the donkeys complaining about it. Of course, I don ' t understand donkey t alk, so I really wouldn ' t k now if they were complaining o r not . But it looks like fun. (sings)

You grow ears out to here and a whale of a tail· And all of a sudden your hands become hooves and you ' re trotting away And you go hee haw , hee haw , hee haw all day .

Driver Pay them no mind. It's nothing. You haven't even finished your lollipop.

Pinoc I don't want your lollipop . I want to go home.

Driver Home? What do you mean, home? You haven't even tried the jelly donuts yet. (she reaches for him)

Pinoc No. (he hits her with the lollipop and runs.)

(There is a chase during which the gates are struck and Candlwyk gets away. Pinocchio manages to escape his pursuers and is left alone onstage)

Pinocchio (noticing something on the ground) What's this? There's something written on the ground. It says ' Here lies the .... the Blue fairy who ... who ... ' Oh, I wish I had gone to school so I could read better. ' ... the Blue Fairy who mourned herself to death over the mischievious Pinocchio. ' Oh, no. It can't be true. Fairies don't die. (he cries) Blue Fa1ry, I'm sorry .

Blue Fairy Poor Pinocchio. Pinocchio Blue Fairy! You're not dead.

Blue No, P~nocchio . !' I wanted to know if you cared about anyone other than yourself, so I put the writing on the ground . I'm glad to see that you do care.

Pinoc Oh, yes, Blue Fairy. I care about you and my papa ... My Papa! How will I ever find him again? Can you help me to find my way home?

Blue It wouldn ' t do any good . Gepetto is not at his cottage . He waited for you to come home and when you didn ' t)he went out looking for you.

Pinoc Looking where?

Blue He walked all the way to the ocean and took a small boat to search the shoreline, but the boat capsized and Gepetto fell into the sea.

Pinoc Into the sea?

Blue And a giant whale opened his mouth and swallowed the boat , and Gepetto too.

Pinoc My papa is in the belly of a whale?

Blue That's right, Finocchio.

Pinoc How will I ever find him?

. Blue Well, where there 's a will, there's a way . Gepetto went looking for you, now you must go looking for him. You know where to look. (Finocchio looks determined and runs off) Be careful, Finocchio . Be careful.

-after which the lights come up on Finocchio and Gepetto inside the whale.

• Pinoc Oh, Papa. Papa, I'm so glad I found you .

Gep Finocchio, you are such a brave boy . I thought I would never see you again .

Pinoc Now , Papa , I want to go home .

Gep So do I . But , unfortunately, it is much more difficult to get out of a whale than it is to get in.

Pinoc We've got to think of something. We can ' t stay here forever.

Gep True , it is not the most pleasant place. Very damp . Not much sunlight. And nothing to eat but fish. But even if I have to live the rest of my life inside the whale, I shall be happier than anywhere else without my Finocchio.

Pinoc Papa, I have an idea.

Gep What is it?

Pinoc Can we start a fire?

Gep Well , I guess we could, as long as the whale do~sn ' t open his mouth and let in another flood of water. But how will ~e start a fire?

Pinoc (picking up dr~ftwood) This wood ... I'll rub it against my wooden arms untii it ignites. The smoke will make the whale cough and sneeze. When he sneezes, everything inside here will go back into the ocean . .. ~ncluding us . Gep Oh, you are so clever, my son. But you must be careful. You might catch on fire too. 44

(P~noc proceeds to rub his arm against the driftwood . Smoke begins to swirl and eventually - it works. The whale sneezes and ... )

(When the lights come up Finocchio and Gepetto are sprawled on the ground)

Gep It worked. It worked. Now, Finocchio, we must rest here awhile. It is a good thing the whale had such a big sneeze. It propelled us all the way back to the shore. When we dry off a little, we can be on our way home.

(Cat and fox enter leading Candlwyk (still a donkey) by a harness)

Fox Come on. We're taking you back.

Cat Don 't tug so hard on his harness, Finicky. You'll hurt him.

Finoc Candlwyk!

Cat Finocchio, where have you been? Why you're all wet.

Gep You know the~ ~, Finocchio?

Pinoc That ' s my friend, Candlwyk.

Gep The donkey?

.. Pinoc He ' s not a donkey .

Gep He looks like a donkey. Not like any donkey I've ever seen before, but a donkey just the same. 45

Driver He ate my lollipop, now he has to pay the price.

Gep I will pay for your lollipop . I can ' t pay right now. I have misplaced my money purse , but as soon as I get horne .. .

Driver I don ' t want your money , I want my donkey.

Gep Thi s is Fi nocchi o. That is a donkey .

Driver (grabs Pinocchio) Come on.

Gep (al so grabbing Finocchio) Stop . (There is a tug of war with Fi nocchio a s the rope)

Cat Finicky , stop them . They might pull him apart .

Blue Fairy Stop it. Enough! Stop it, I say . (she waves her· wand and maybe something happens) That ' s better .

(Driver chases Candlwyk. Candlwyk goes behind a rock)

Blue Fairy Stop. You must be mistaken. That is no donkey. (She does one of those tricks again and Candlwyk comes out without his ears and tail.) You see. No donkeys here.

Candlwyk Thanks, ma'm.

Pinoc Come on, Candlwyk. (they leave)

Driver Finicky, we've got to talk. (he starts to pull Finicky off)

Finicky About what? Nonoe of this is my fault. If you had put a little more sugar in that lollipop, maybe the puppet would have been a donkey by now. (they are gone)

Cat That was a nice thing you did. I wouldn't want Finicky to know, but I'm really kind of glad Pinoccchio found his daddy. But maybe you could tell him to be a little careful. A puppet with no ~trings needs a little extra protection .

Blue Fairy But he isn ' t a puppet .

Cat Yes, he is. He's made of wood, and he's got these funny joints, and his nose . Did you see his nose? Blue Fairy P.e was a pu pp01.. . But I think he's earned the ~ight to be a real boy.

Cat A real bo~? You can do that?

Blue Fairy I a 1 ready have·.

Cat Oh, you really are a nice lady. And that dress ... that is such a pretty dress.
