It tells a story concerning inter-racial, same-sex love, and the control of imagemaking. A. The past story, 1828-1836 is loosely based on the true story of New Zealand Missionary William Yate and his lover, Eruera Pare Hongi. It is mostly set in Northland, New Zealand, and focuses on the inland Waimate North Mission and surrounding Maori settlement. B. The present day story is a fictional account of Riki Te Awata and an English Photographer, Jeffrey Edison. It is mostly set in the community around a coastal marae and a derelict Southern Mission.1 Sophie Jerram November 2002 1 Unlike the Waimate Mission, this ‘Southern Mission’ is fictional. It was originally intended to be the Puriri mission, at the base of the Coromandel Peninsular, established by William Yate in 1834. Henry Tacy's Years at Swanton Morley
This is the Fortieth of an occasional series of articles by David Stone about incidents in the history of Swanton Morley and its church Henry Tacy’s Years at Swanton Morley Introduction In my last article I talked about Henry Tacy’s mission to the Maoris, and in particular about the foundation of a mission station at Kerikeri and the birth there in November 1825 of Henry Tacy Clarke, second son of George Clarke. This was, incidentally, just after Henry Tacy was appointed rector of Swanton Morley. Here, for completeness, I shall tell you a little more about what happened to Henry Tacy’s protégés, James Kemp and George Clarke in New Zealand, before returning to Henry Tacy himself. George Clarke and others decided to build a new mission station and farm at Waimate North, which was not far away from the original station at Kerikeri. However, it required a major effort involving the building of 15 miles of road through rough country, and the bridging of two rivers. The first families moved in in June 1832. Charles Darwin visited the new mission in December 1835, when the Beagle spent 10 days in the Bay of Islands, but overall the mission was not a great success. In 1840 George Clarke reluctantly left the mission when he was appointed by Governor Hobson as ‘Protector of the Maori People’. However, it soon became clear that Clarke was faced with the impossible task both of protecting Maori interests and of acting for the government in land-sale negotiations. He resigned in 1846 and went to live with his son Henry Tacy Clarke at Waimate. -

Colonisation and the Involution of the Maori Economy Hazel Petrie University of Auckland Auckland, New Zealand [email protected] A paper for Session 24 XIII World Congress of Economic History Buenos Aires July 2002 In 2001, international research by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, found Maori to be the most entrepreneurial people in the world, noting also that Maori ‘played an important role in the history and evolution of New Zealand entrepreneurship’.1 These findings beg a consideration of why the Maori economy, which was expanding vigorously in terms of value and in terms of international markets immediately prior to New Zealand’s annexation by Britain in 1840, involuted soon after colonisation. Before offering examples of Maori commercial practice in the period between initial European contact and colonisation, this paper will summarise some essential features of Maori society that underlay those practices. It will then consider how three broad aspects of the subsequent colonising process impacted on these practices during its first twenty five years. These aspects are: Christian beliefs and values, the ideologies of the newly emerging ‘science’ of Political Economy; and the racial attitudes and political demands of an increasingly powerful settler government. It is acknowledged that the nature of Maori commerce varied according to regional resources, the timing and degree of exposure to foreigners, local politics, individual personalities, and many other factors. There was no one Maori practice or experience, but the examples offered, which arose in a study of Maori flourmill and trading ship ownership, are intended to show how these facets of colonisation interwove to encourage a narrowing and contraction of Maori commercial endeavours. -

He was educated at Eton and St John’s College, Cambridge, graduating as a B.A. in 1831 and a M.A. in 1834. He was ordained as an Anglican priest in 1834 and served in the parish of Windsor. He married Sarah Richardson in 1838. He was consecrated the first Bishop of New Zealand on 17 October 1841 and left for New Zealand in December 1841. He was first based at Waimate, near the Bay of Islands, and immediately began the arduous journeys that were a feature of his bishopric. He moved to Auckland in 1844. In 1847-51 he made annual cruises to the islands of Melanesia. Selwyn visited England in 1854-55 and enlisted the services of the Reverend John Patteson, the future Bishop of Melanesia, and secured a missionary schooner, Southern Cross. -
English Law and the Mäori Response: a Case Study from the Runanga System in Northland, 1861-65
ENGLISH LAW AND THE MÄORI RESPONSE: A CASE STUDY FROM THE RUNANGA SYSTEM IN NORTHLAND, 1861-65 VINCENT O’MALLEY HistoryWorks, Wellington Examples of the genuine devolution of state authority to Mäori tribal communities are few in New Zealand history until at least the late 20th century. Sir George Grey’s 1861 “plan of native government”, usually described as the “new institutions” or “runanga system” (Ward 1974:125), is often cited as one of the earliest efforts in this direction. Yet there was never any intention of allowing the runanga (tribal councils or assemblies) established under this system to develop into state-sanctioned instruments of genuine self-government. The extension of English law into what were perceived to be ungovernable Mäori districts remained the priority throughout. With unofficial runanga already widely established in many Mäori communities, officials saw an opportunity to harness the energies of these in pursuit of government objectives (O’Malley 2004:47). Widespread suspicion of Crown intentions in the wake of the first Taranaki War saw Grey’s plans flatly rejected in many areas (Ward 1974:132-33). Meanwhile, chiefs in those districts where the runanga system was most fully implemented proved no more willing to be duped into enforcing Päkehä laws against their own communities. Government officials, who had hoped to appropriate for their own ends the aspirations of Mäori in such districts for state recognition of existing tribal governance structures, instead found the new runanga system reappropriated by iwi (‘tribal’) leaders in pursuit of their own, rather different objectives. An assertion of British sovereignty from one perspective was thus viewed from another as belated recognition of the right of Mäori communities to manage their own affairs in accordance with their own customs, as had been widely understood by many chiefs to have been promised to them under the Treaty of Waitangi signed in 1840. -

Parkinson 53 Hankey Street, Mt Cook, Wellington, New Zealand ([email protected]) ABSTRACT: The customary practice of tuku, or gift exchange, by Mäori chiefs is exemplified in the formal gifts of two mere pounamu (greenstone clubs) by Titore and Patuone to King William IV of the United Kingdom in 1834, in the expectation of a formal return. The formal return was of two sets of plate armour, that for Titore arriving in 1835 and that for Patuone two years later, in 1837. The former is in the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa (Te Papa) but the latter is lost, although a receipt and a detailed description survive, along with good documentation. The two mere pounamu (as far as can be determined) have also been located and are illustrated for the first time; they are still in the Royal Collection, at St James’s Palace, London. ‘His Highness Titore’ was killed at the Bay of Islands in 1837, but a formal salute to him was fired from HMS Rattlesnake on the orders of Captain William Hobson at that time. Patuone dined with Hobson on HMS Herald on 6 February 1840, presenting him with a further mere pounamu for Queen Victoria, as he had for her late uncle. This mere is one of two that were retained in Hobson’s family after his death in 1842, and is also in Te Papa, here illustrated. -
