The Foundation is responding to this main challenge by placing young people at the heart of its activities. The future of the Euro-Mediterranean region will be very much determined by the vision, attitudes and actions of today’s young people. It is hence essential that they feel they are respected members of the society, irrespective of their background and culture, and that they take ownership of fundamental values. Empowering and supporting youth voices to enhance a shared culture of dialogue in the Euro-med region is the main objective of the Anna Lindh Foundation. We are convinced that ensuring young people to acquire social, civic and intercultural competences, by involving and providing them with the opportunity to have a say in the definition of their own future and priorities, can create a real space of dialogue in the region. We, at the Anna Lindh Foundation, have a firm belief in youth and their capacity to lead the change in their societies towards a peaceful and prosperous future. This does not come as a surprise given that young people would be the first to benefit from the positive changes in their societies and the first to suffer from situations of insecurity, instability, and economic hardship. There is a great need to develop a positive alternative narrative that cannot be achieved through lecturing and preaching, but instead through a sophisticated process of nurturing skills of curiosity, understanding, and critical thinking. We should use a positive discourse to oppose the discourse of intolerance; promoting values, participation and citizenship and we must make room for the new generations to act. Enjoying such great intercultural exposure in todays´ societies while avoiding the negative stances, resentment, is today a key challenge. Education in general, and intercultural learning in particular, have a huge potential to reach out to the young people and prevent them from drifting away from society. It is precisely in this context that we underline the relevance of intercultural citizenship education and its importance at the heart of the process of constructing the counter-narrative. Education that moves away from traditional techniques to critical techniques, from unitary worldviews to inclusive and multi- perspective worldviews, education that spans beyond schools and formal education to represent a shared responsibility between school and family, government and civil society, and almost all the components of the society is today a clear pathway for a more efficient approach towards intercultural citizenship and active participation. To that end we, at the Anna Lindh Foundation, in cooperation with a range of prestigious experts and professionals from all over the Euro-Mediterranean region, introduce this project: A Handbook on Intercultural Citizenship Education at the service of the young generations of the region. 6 Anna Lindh Foundation Education Handbook Intercultural Learning in New Regional Reality Hatem Atallah - Executive Director of the Anna Lindh Foundation The current regional context is characterised by increased movements of people resulting in the emergence of more multicultural societies where integration still remains a challenge, where intolerance and radicalism are very present and constitute a major challenge to us all. Embedding a value-based education is key to empower a new generation of dialogue players. Over the past years, the Anna Lindh Foundation has been observing the intercultural trends in the Euro-Mediterranean region through its Intercultural Trends Report. It is a concrete, scientific, survey-based analysis that examines interest, perception, values, and readiness for dialogue and cooperation among the people of the region. It comes as no surprise that these Reports have pointed out the relevance of education both as a prerequisite to openness and readiness for dialogue and mutual understanding, and as a space for future action. Convinced of the centrality of education to any sustainable development endeavour we decided at the Anna Lind Foundation to sharpen our focus on formal and non-formal education by developing an intercultural education programme that aims to reinforce intercultural dialogue and intercultural citizenship, to play a preventive role in facing extremism, exclusion, and intolerance, and to build on the common values between the people of the region to embrace cultural diversity and achieve intercultural cooperation. It is within this context that the Anna Lindh Education Handbook on Intercultural Citizenship in the Euro-Mediterranean region takes its full relevance. A resource which presents an introduction to the notion of intercultural citizenship education and offers a reference for educators, schools, civil society, governments, and citizens at large, for strengthening awareness around the common values among the people of the region, for shedding light on the opportunities offered by the regional cultural diversity, and for facilitating

Revised paper accepted 5 August 2008 Summary During the first decades of the sixteenth century, several animals described and viewed as exotic by the Europeans were regularly shipped from India to Lisbon. This paper addresses the relevance of these ‘new’ animals to knowledge and visual representations of the natural world. It discusses their cultural and scientific meaning in Portuguese travel literature of the period as well as printed illustrations, charts and tapestries. This paper suggests that Portugal did not make the most of its unique position in bringing news and animals from Asia. This was either because secrecy associated with trade and military interests hindered the diffusion of illustrations presented in Portuguese travel literature or because the illustrations commissioned by the nobility were represented on expensive media such as parchments and tapestries and remained treasured possessions. However, the essay also proposes that the Portuguese contributed to a new sense of the experience and meaning of nature and that they were crucial mediators in access to new knowledge and new ways of representing the natural world during this period. A Comprehensive, Integrated, and Bottom-up Approach Daniela Huber and Maria Cristina Paciello1 Abstract Euro-Mediterranean policies, as well as research on them, have been characterized by a Euro- centric approach based on a narrow geopolitical construction of the Mediterranean. Moreover, stakeholders, policy instruments, and policy issues have been defined from a European standpoint, marginalizing the perspectives and needs of local states and people, and ignoring the role played by new and powerful regional and global actors. In an increasingly multipolar world, overcoming this Euro-centric approach is key for Europe to play a more meaningful role in the region. Thus, MEDRESET aims to reset our understanding of the Mediterranean and develop alternative visions for a new partnership and corresponding EU policies, reinventing a future role for the EU as an inclusive, flexible, and responsive actor in the region. This will be achieved through an integrated research design which is in three phases: it 1) de-constructs the EU construction of the Mediterranean, 2) counters it by mapping the region on the geopolitical level and in four key policy areas (political ideas, agriculture and water, industry and energy, migration and mobility) alongside a three-dimensional framework (stakeholders, policy instruments, policy issues), which directly feeds into 3) a reconstruction of a new role for the EU, enhancing its ability to exert reflexive leadership and thus its relevance in the region.

    9 © Copyrighted Material Inventive Translation, Portraiture and Spanish Habsburg Taste in the Sixteenth Century Elena Calvillo The Spanish Patron In his autobiography, Benvenuto Cellini recounts how when faced with an angry mob of Spaniards from the household of the bishop of Salamanca, he defiantly pointed his gun into the crowd and cried, ‘You treacherous Moors – so this is how you loot the shops and houses in a city like Rome?’1 According to the artist, the Spaniards had come to collect a vase that had been returned to Cellini to be repaired, but because the patron had not yet paid for it, Cellini declined to release it. The commotion surrounding this exchange soon attracted the attention of a few Roman gentlemen, eager to join the fight. Their offer to help Cellini kill his opponents was made ‘with such vehemence that the Spaniards were terrified out of their wits’ and retreated.2 The Spanish courtiers were subsequently admonished by the bishop, who, Cellini claimed, was angered by both the violence initiated by the brash members of his household and by their failure to finish the job. Cellini’s characterization of the Spanish throughout this part of his text, leading up to the Sack of 1527, is similar to many portrayals of this period.3 For Cellini, such a depiction of the troublesome Spaniards served the rhetorical ends of the autobiography by highlighting his loyalty to Rome and his personal bravery, most spectacularly demonstrated in his account of the defence of the Castel Sant’Angelo against imperial troops.     The Case of the New Christians of Lamego as an Example of Resistance against the Portuguese Inquisition in Sixteenth Century Portugal Susana Bastos Mateus and James W. Nelson Novoa* The article presents a particular case of Portuguese New Christian resistance to the establishment of the tribunal of the Holy Office in Portugal. Basing itself on Portuguese and Vatican documents the article depicts the New Christian community in Lamego which organized itself to present their case in Rome using a variety of strategies against the civil and ecclesiastical authorities in the kingdom. It presents the concrete example of several prominent figures who were instrumental in constructing a network to challenge the creation of the tribunal in Portugal. The work of the nineteenth century Portuguese historian, Alexandre Herculano (1810-1877), opened new doors in what was an often inaccessible or forgotten field of research, the early establishment and functioning of the tribunal of the Holy Office in Portugal, which was formally instated there in 1536 and only abolished in 1821.1 As was demonstrated by Herculano and reiterated by subsequent scholars, the main priority of the Holy Office in Portugal was the obliteration of the perceived persistence of Jewish religious practices and beliefs among those individuals converted in 1497 and their descendents. Much of Herculano’s work was occupied with the negotiations and dealings pursuant to the establishment of the tribunal, which, after receiving initial approval from Pope Clement VII (1478-1534; papacy 1523-1534), finally got off the ground under Paul III (1468-1549; papacy 1534-1549). When the creation of the tribunal was first decreed, various elements came into play which stalled its opening.
