Committee Mr. Clement LEE Dr. Joseph WONG 4 Hong Kong Tennis Association / Annual Report 2016 President's Report I would like to thank the HKTA staff, council and committee members for their hard work throughout the year. 2016 has been a fruitful year for Hong Kong tennis with a combination of good junior results, the launching of community initiatives and closer ties with the ITF. I wish to highlight the outstanding performance of the Hong Kong World Junior Tennis Girls’ team consisting of Cody Wong, Jenny Wong and Lin Wing Ka, who won the Asia/Oceania qualifying event and came sixth in the World Finals, which matches the best-ever Hong Kong result in an ITF junior team tournament. The HKTA has continued to expand its community effort with the launch of the $21 million Jockey Club Tennis Rocks Programme. During the year, the Community and Social Responsibility Committee, which I chaired, was established. The main objective of the committee is to serve and contribute to the Hong Kong community, providing the opportunity for primary school students, teachers, seniors and children with special needs to learn tennis. I attended the ITF Annual General Meeting held at Zagreb, Croatia in June and met with the ITF President and some of the Board Members, as well as delegates from different national associations. More importantly, I witnessed Hong Kong’s application to increase our stake in ITF membership from one share to three shares being approved. This aligns with the HKTA’s recent expansion in international tournaments and initiatives. I again met with the ITF President, Mr. David Haggerty, when he visited Hong Kong in September, becoming the first ITF President to visit since 2005. At this year’s Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open, I was excited to see one of the best ever player line-ups for an international series event, with three Grand Slam champions and four World No1s competing. The tournament climaxed on the Sunday final, with former World No1 Caroline Wozniacki claiming the title in a thrilling game with the fast upcoming Kristina Mladenovic. Lastly, I would like to thank the Home Affairs Bureau, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Mega Events Fund for their continued support. Mr. Philip Mok President Hong Kong Tennis Association Hong Kong Tennis Association / Annual Report 2016 5 HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR Hong Kong Coaches receive LTA Coaching Certification Five Hong Kong coaches attended and received certification from the Boris Becker & Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) Coach Association at Mission Hills in July. The coaches received valuable insight from former no.1 and 6 time Grand Slam champion Becker and Dan Thorp, the LTA’s Head of Coach Development, with the course marking the first time the LTA coaching certification has been held outside the United Kingdom in China. Participants of the LTA and Boris Becker coaching clinic at Mission Hills New coaches in 2016 One of Hong Kong’s most successful homegrown players, Tong Ka Po joined the NTS Kowloon Tsai coaching team earlier this year. During her professional career, Tong reached a high of WTA No. 236 in singles & 154 in doubles and racked up 3 ITF Pro Circuit singles and 6 doubles titles. She will now impart her considerable experience with the next generation of upcoming players. John Black from the United Kingdom and Nikola Zajelac from Serbia joined the HKSI coaching team this year. Both have impressive credentials with John having worked with current top pro Kyle Edmund as a travelling coach whilst Nikola has coached former Junior No. 1 Nikola Milojevic. At the beginning of the year former Hong Kong Davis Cup player Mr. Michael Walker was recruited as Director of Player Development to head up the HKTA coaching programme. Hong Kong secures Davis Cup Group II promotion Hong Kong will re-join Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group II in 2017 after emerging triumphant at Left to right: Jack Wong, the Group III playoffs held from July 11-16 on the high altitude outdoor clay in Tehran, Iran. With promotion on the line, Hong Kong toughed out a 2-1 victory over Group B winners Lebanon. After Hong Kong dropped the opening singles rubber, Karan Rostogi secured a straight forward singles win and then teamed with Kevin Wong to capture the deciding point in doubles. The promotion will see Hong Kong compete in Group II for the first time since 2014. 6 Hong Kong Tennis Association / Annual Report 2016 EFG Under-14 Team finish Sixth in World Hong Kong’s under-14 girls team recorded a historic milestone at the World Junior Tennis finals in Prostejov, Czech Republic, held from August 1-8, placing sixth overalls ahead of all other Asian teams. The team, consisting of Cody Wong, Jenny Wong, and Lin Wing Ka qualified for the WJT Finals for the first time in the tournament’s 25 year history after winning the WJT Asia/Oceania qualifying event in April, where they took out Australia, Korea, and Japan in successive rounds. Facing Ecuador next, Hong Kong triumphed emphatically 3-0 to set up a final match against Slovakia. The EFG Girl’s Team lost the two singles rubbers, but saved face with a hard fought doubles victory to finish in 6th place, Hong Kong’s best ever result in the competition. • The Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open (PHKTO) 2016 Reached Its
The Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open (PHKTO) 2016 reached its thrilling finale last month, rounding off a tournament whose impact will resonate throughout Asia’s World City for a long time to come. On centre court, the all-action singles final witnessed former world number one Caroline Wozniacki battle Kristina Mladenovic for three spellbinding sets to take the crown; in the fast-paced doubles final, sisters Chan Yung-Jan and Chan Hao-Ching beat British stars Naomi Broady and Heather Watson to secure their third title of the season. Congratulations to the winners, and we hope they will return to defend their titles in 2017. The climax to a gripping week of world-class tennis action saw a packed-out stadium and outstanding performances on court, while in the schools, streets and neighbourhoods of Hong Kong, PHKTO has instilled a fresh sense of sporting culture and active lifestyles, together with a love of tennis. According to the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), PHKTO 2016 was recorded as one of the highest attended International Series events in the world, a tremendous achievement for the tournament’s third year. This year’s event featured the strongest player field in the history of the tournament, including Angelique Kerber (world number one, Australian Open 2016 singles Champion and US Open 2016 Singles Champion); and three former world number ones: Caroline Wozniacki, Venus Williams (also seven-time Grand Slam singles champion) and PHKTO 2015 singles champion Jelena Janković. Off the court, and in line with our vision to be “the People’s Tournament”, new community engagement activities included a Hong Kong-themed Opening Ceremony and the spectacular CAN Challenge fundraiser, while we broke with typical sports event tradition by offering free tickets not only on “People’s Monday” but also on “Students’ Tuesday”.
