4 Hong Kong Tennis Association / Annual Report 2016 President's Report

I would like to thank the HKTA staff, council and committee members for their hard work throughout the year. 2016 has been a fruitful year for Hong Kong tennis with a combination of good junior results, the launching of community initiatives and closer ties with the ITF.

I wish to highlight the outstanding performance of the Hong Kong World Junior Tennis Girls’ team consisting of Cody Wong, Jenny Wong and Lin Wing Ka, who won the Asia/Oceania qualifying event and came sixth in the World Finals, which matches the best-ever Hong Kong result in an ITF junior team tournament.

The HKTA has continued to expand its community effort with the launch of the $21 million Jockey Club Tennis Rocks Programme. During the year, the Community and Social Responsibility Committee, which I chaired, was established. The main objective of the committee is to serve and contribute to the Hong Kong community, providing the opportunity for primary school students, teachers, seniors and children with special needs to learn tennis.

I attended the ITF Annual General Meeting held at , Croatia in June and met with the ITF President and some of the Board Members, as well as delegates from different national associations. More importantly, I witnessed Hong Kong’s application to increase our stake in ITF membership from one share to three shares being approved. This aligns with the HKTA’s recent expansion in international tournaments and initiatives. I again met with the ITF President, Mr. David Haggerty, when he visited Hong Kong in September, becoming the first ITF President to visit since 2005.

At this year’s Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open, I was excited to see one of the best ever player line-ups for an international series event, with three champions and four World No1s competing. The tournament climaxed on the Sunday final, with former World No1 claiming the title in a thrilling game with the fast upcoming .

Lastly, I would like to thank the Home Affairs Bureau, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Mega Events Fund for their continued support.

Mr. Philip Mok President Hong Kong Tennis Association

The third edition of the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open (PHKTO) took place from October 8-16, with a star studded line up descending upon Victoria Park for the week long sporting spectacle, during the last week of the Autumn Asian Swing.

The Tournament was sponsored by the Mega Events Fund for the second year running, recognised as an ‘M’ Mark Event and supported by the Tourism Commission, the Leisure & Cultural Services Department and the Home Affairs Bureau. Prudential Hong Kong Limited were Title Sponsors for the third straight year, alongside Tournament Partners Lee Gardens, BMW, NEC, Leica, Lalique, The Kowloon Dairy, Lotto, Head, Gatorade, Yonex and VITA, amongst others.

With top seed Kerber stumbling in the quarterfinals against the tenacious Gavrilova and none of the other top 4 seeds making it out of the second round, the final was experience versus youth after a rock steady Wozniacki took out defending champion Jankovic and Mladenovic and overcame Gavrilova in straight sets in the semi finals.

The final, played in front of a packed crowd, was full of twists and turns, with the consistent Dane racing through the first set 6-1 against a seemingly ailing Mladenovic, only for the French player to tap into hidden reserves and employ her big hitting game to grab the second set in a tiebreak. Despite some impressive shot making in the third set, Mladenovic was only delaying the inevitable, with the unflappable two time US Open finalist utilising her impenetrable baseline game to wrap up a 6-1, 6-7(4), 6-2 victory in a gruelling 2 hours 40 minutes.

The win marked Wozniacki’s second title of the Asian Swing following her win at the Tokyo Pan Pacific Open and consolidated a remarkable return to form in the second half of the season, which saw her reclaim her rightful spot back in the top 20.

Hong Kong was represented by Zhang Ling who was awarded a wild card into the singles main draw, losing to Wang Qiang in the first round, whilst qualifying wild cards were given to Claudia Ng, Cody Wong, Katherine Ip and Eudice Chong, whom advanced to the qualifying final round.

The core focus of community engagement was further developed this year with a number of keystone initiatives. The PHKTO’s flagship CSR initiative “Let’s Serve” offered tennis clinics for around 10,000 students and “Kid’s Day” saw over 100 students receive the chance to hit with WTA pros. Thousands of people received free entry to the Tournament for People’s Monday which kicked off the event with a colourful opening ceremony and Student’s Tuesday.

Friends of Asia Hong Kong, the Tournament’s Official Charity Partner matched dollar for dollar the amounts raised from the PHKTO’s charitable events “Can Challenge” and “Bounce for Tennis.” Four WTA players including Johanna Konta and Zheng Sai Sai helped prepare meals at Food Angel, an organisation which re-processes surplus edible food into meals for the underprivileged.

Year in Review Main objectives of the Coaches Development and Qualification Committee are to ensure that all HKTA licensed coaches have access to a high-quality coaching support service that is required to assist them to uphold and improve their coaching standards, by providing continued education to update the coaches with the latest methodology and tools.

This year the CDQC planned and implemented a fruitful agenda of coaches’ trainings, refreshment courses and workshops. All these are organised to expand the opportunities through which the coaches can further enhance their knowledge, and to furnish them with the proficiency that is required to stay at the forefront of the coaching industry.

Highlights of the year included a coaching workshop conducted by former Technical Director of French Tennis Federation, Mr. Patrice Hagelauer in September; and a workshop on special behavioural issues conducted by the founder of Learning Support Services Association Ms Anita Ellis. In addition, nine coaches attended the ITF Asian Coaches Conference from 29 October to 1 November in Guangzhou.

The overall responses to these workshops have been extremely positive, and in 2017 the CDQC will continue to increase the coaches’ training opportunities by inviting professionals from different areas to conduct workshops. In the meantime, the CDQC will assist coaches in their efforts to acquire higher level coaching qualifications.

The CDQC believes that the development of coaches in Hong Kong through the provision of appropriate education and support is essential to ensure the future success of tennis in Hong Kong.

ITF-endorsed HKTA Coach Certification Scheme There were four Mini Tennis Instructor Courses and one Elementary Course conducted by local tutors in 2016. The CDQC also finally organised the second Advanced Course since 2002 to achieve one of its targets, which is to increase the number of higher level coaches.

16 Hong Kong Tennis Association / Annual Report 2016 HKTA Coach Licensing Scheme and Coach Benefits Initiated by the Committee in 2003, the HKTA Coach Licensing Scheme serves to provide a quality benchmark for accessing the overall standard of coaches. This year 358 coaches successfully registered under this scheme. The scheme helps to standardise the coaching system, recognise qualifications of coaches, and open a learning window for the coaches to keep abreast of the latest coaching know-how and technology in the game through a continuous educational programme.

The CDQC has been actively promoting the status of the HKTA licensed coaches in all the HKTA programmes and on public courts throughout the year. The CDQC places a great deal of focus on the benefits of the licensed coaches and has endeavoured to promote the licensed coach status to the tennis public.

Workshops and Seminars The 12 workshops and seminars organised provided an opportunity for licensed coaches to consolidate their knowledge in different aspects. The following workshops and seminars by CDQC were organised in 2016 and were very well-received by the coaches:

In order to attract wider participation and raise the popularity of the event among the business community, a players’ party was held on the first Sunday of the event. It received a good response from participating teams, who enjoyed live band music and food between matches. The 24th Dr. Henry Fok Corporate Patron League was concluded on 2 May, with a total of 38 teams and 293 players participating. The event generated more than HK$130,000, which was applied to various HKTA junior development programmes.

Year in Review Progress continues to be made on many key areas of the Player Development Programme to ensure we develop high-performing tennis athletes for the future. We have achieved good results in 2016 that are extremely encouraging, especially the outstanding achievement by the World Junior Tennis Girls’ Team, who won the qualifying event in Asian/Oceania, qualified for the World Finals for the first time ever and captured 6th position in the world group.

The National Training Squad and Elite Development were improved in terms of the resources invested in coaches and players. Mr. Michael Walker was recruited as Director of Player Development at the beginning of the year. In addition to the Incentive Scheme, we have also set up the HKTA Tournament Support Scheme this year to top up the previous player support and enable players to obtain essential match-play experience at international tournaments.

Our school programmes go from strength to strength. We have succeeded in making great progress, which clearly shows in participation numbers. This year, the number of schools participating in Inter-School Tennis increased approximately 30%, while enrolment in the Mini Tennis Programme has also seen continuous growth.

Improvements have been seen not only in increased participation, but also in the enhanced Junior Development Programme. (See Junior Development Pyramid). Updating the Junior Tennis Development strategies has ensured a clear focus and sense of purpose to our work, which will enable us to identify talent and deliver our programmes in more effective and efficient way.

We will continue to explore channels to promote tennis in 2017, enhance the development work and ensure we are increasing the playing standard by offering quality coaching and continuously investing the necessary resources in our programmes.

Success is always due to the support of many different bodies, and the PDC would like to take this opportunity to thank the HKTA Council for its support during the year. The PDC would also like to thank Prudential Hong Kong, EFG Bank, Wilber Foundation and Prince for their financial support, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department for its funding support, the management of the HKSI for their continued support and grants awarded over the year and Prince, Dunlop, Head and Wilson for their generous sponsorship. The PDC would also like to recognise the hard work of the HKTA National Coaching Team and staff, all the licensed coaches, and players who have given us so much support during the year, and the players’ parents for their confidence and trust in us. Tennis Stars of the Future The number of participants continued to increase for the third consecutive year this summer. Approximately 1,350 fresh new faces picked up a tennis racquet for the first time, all of whom will hopefully, in time, learn to appreciate the time-honoured virtues of tennis and come to embrace tennis as “a sport for life”.

The programme is structured with five stages to provide a systematic tennis training programme at entry-level for children between the age Summer training at Tseung Kwan O of 6-14. As the participants advance to a higher stage, their skill level and knowledge of the game will also increase correspondingly. The programme culminates with an age-group competition, which is a chance for the players and coaches to see how they have advanced after six months of training. This year the competition will consist of Boys 6 & under, Girls 6 & under, Boys 8 & under, Girls 8 & under, Boys 10 & under, Girls 10 & under, Boys 12 & under, Girls 12 & under and Girls 12 & under. Those who exhibit a keen talent for the game may also receive invitations to join various HKTA junior squads to further their development.

The PDC would like to take this opportunity to thank Dunlop and LCSD for their support of this programme. We are looking forward to meeting more young children through this programme and helping them to discover their sporting potential and experience the fun of tennis.

40 Hong Kong Tennis Association / Annual Report 2016 School Programmes With the generous support of Prudential Hong Kong Ltd. the school programme was significantly enhanced and enabled more school visits in 2016 and provided more resources to introduce the game to students in their physical education lessons, while also providing guidance to teachers for organising tennis activities in class. The “Let’s Serve” programme launched in 2016 reached 48 primary and secondary schools with close to 10,000 students benefiting. The feedback was excellent and we will continue the programme in 2017, hopefully one day reaching out to all schools. Let’s Serve school visit

Ranking System The Tournament Committee has revamped the EFG Junior Ranking, which is published on the HKTA website on the first Wednesday of each month. From July 2016, both the old and new rankings will be published. The old ranking computes all tournament results, using the old ranking table and a 15 ITF conversion points ratio. The new ranking will count the best 6 results, using the new ranking table and a 35 ITF conversion points ratio. The new system, which computes the best 6 results of a player over the previous 12 months on a rolling basis, is largely in line with the junior ranking system of the ITF. There is also conversion from points gathered from ITF and ATF junior tournaments to the Hong Kong junior ranking, as it is important for junior players to compete in international tournaments. The new system will be fully adopted starting in January 2017.
