North West Wales Dendrochronology Project NORTH WEST WALES DENDROCHRONOLOGY PROJECT DATING OLD WELSH HOUSES - MEIRIONETH BRONGORONWY FFESTINIOG, MERIONETHSHIRE NGR SH 718 411 House History Summary This typical Snowdonia house was probably built in 1531 but by whom is as yet unknown. The first reference is in a feoffment of 1611 when it was apparently tenanted by Evan Lewis Anwill but sold by John Owen of Ffestiniog to Evan Lloyd of London for £30 - this was probably Evan Lloyd of Dulassau, Penmachno. In 1632 it was sold to John Jones of Gray's Inn (probably of Meillionen and later Dolymoch) for £200 [evidence of rampant inflation!] The Dolymoch estate passed via an heiress Margaret to the Pugh family of Bennar, Penmachno and sometime after 1698 it passed via another heiress, Anne, to John Wynne, Bishop of St Asaph's and later Bishop of Bath and Wells. After over 100 years it devolved to a great nephew William John Bankes in 1815 and this family sold the estate in 1870. Mr William Pierce bought Brongoronwy and adjacent farms but kept them only 10 years before selling to the major landowner in the area Phillips Lloyd Fletcher; so it became part of the Pengwern Estate. This estate was gradually broken up after 1919 and in 1921 Brongoronwy was bought by Henry Thomas of Babell Cottage, Ffestiniog for £700. He died intestate in 1925 and his heir Robert Richard Jones sold in 1929 to Morris Jones of Cynfal, Barmouth. Tenants: After Evan Lewis Anwyll the next known tenant was Richard Lloyd in 1798. Brongoronwy was farmed by three generations of Lloyds until 1892 when David Price - a kinsman of the Lloyds became the occupant. David died in 1920 when Evan Williams occupied it. Miss Dinah Pickard, Merioneth, March 2012 BRONGORONWY, FFESTINIOG, MERIONETHSHIRE NRG SH 718 411 HOUSE HISTORY This house was known as Bronrowgoch (1611), Bron’ronw (1798 1840 1869), Bron ronnw (1803 1855, 1870). Bron yr Onen (1809). Bryn yr Onnen (1820). Brongoronwy (1870 onwards). All these names and those of other properties are spelt as in the quoted documents. Dendrochronology summary A total of ten timbers were sampled in this building. One timber showed several growth depressions and could not be dated. Of the remaining nine series, one- a collar- was found to have been from a tree felled in summer 1477, whilst all the other roof timbers, and the top plate of a ground-floor screen appear to form a single group of timbers, most likely felled at the same time. Only one timber retained complete sapwood, and was found to have been from a tree felled in winter 1530/31. It seems likely therefore that construction took place in 1531, or within a year or two after this date. Editorial UR Autumnal Meeting will be held at Manchester on Wednesday, 16th October, at 4 p.m., in the Hall attached to Cavendish Church. Papers are expected from Professor OG. Lyon Turner, M.A., on '' Congregationalism and the Confessors of 1662" ; and from Mr. A. Peel, M.A., B.Litt., on some fruits of his researches into Elizabethan Puritanism. Our Annual Meeting was held on 8th May ; the attendance was meagre. The officers were unanimously reappointed, with thanks for past services; and the Rev. W. Pierce was associated with the secretariat, The rest of the proceedings were conversational, dealing with our future work and the best means of increasing our membership. We note with regret the decease of two of our oldest members; Rev. H. Shaw, of Urmston, who in 1901 read an instructive paper on the rise and growth of Congregationalism in Manchester ; and Mr. John Scamell, of Westbury, from whom we have more than once received interesting communications. The 250th Anniversary of the Act of Uniformity has been duly recognized by most ofthe churches which originated in the labours of the ejected ministers, and united commemorations are in pro spect. But it must have been felt by all who are old enough to remember the celebration of fifty years ago, that there has been no such enthusiasm as marked the Bicentenary in 1862. This, however, can excite no surprise. The Bicentenary followed close on a great religious revival ; and it was very properly used for the promotion of schemes of Church extension, which were then greatly needed. A few figures will shew how fruitful was the impulse thus generated.

It includes the Dwyryd estuary from its mouth near Porthmadog to its inland tidal limit at Tan-y-bwlch. It also includes Morfa Harlech on the southern shore of the estuary, and the towns of Harlech and Penrhyndeudraeth. To the north is SCA 20: Porthmadog and Glaslyn Estuary, to the west is SCA 19: Criccieth to Mochras, and to the south is SCA 22: Mochras to Fairbourne and Sarn Badrig. View across the Dwyryd Estuary from Ynys, showing intertidal habitats, the village of Portmeirion and the mountains of Snowdonia forming the backdrop. Image © Fiona Fyfe Summary Description Views of this SCA are dominated by the broad landform of the Dwyryd estuary, with its extensive salt marshes, sand, mud and dune system (Morfa Harlech). The estuary also contains distinctive ‘islands’ and ridges of higher ground on either side. Overlooking the estuary are the contrasting villages of Harlech (with its Medieval castle on the valley side), Portmeirion with its Italianate architecture, and the industrial village of Penrhyndeudraeth. Surrounding the estuary are the wooded hills of Snowdonia, which form a majestic backdrop to picturesque views from lower land. In the eastern part of SCA, the valley narrows as the river flows inland. Here, the Afon Dwyryd has been heavily modified flows between areas of improved grazing, with main roads on both sides of the valley floor.

SELECTED ABOUT THE YEAR 1711-12 FROM iLetots Btonn's ©ristnal Visitation, BY THE CELEBRATED WELSH POET AND GRAMMARIAN, JOHN RHYDDERCH, A nd preserved in a MS. Volume formerly belonging to Lord Berwick, at Attingham House, near Shrewsbury, and afterwards in the possession of Sir THOMAS PHILLIPPS, Baronet, AT MIDDLEHILL, WORCESTERSHIRE. PRINTED FOR THE POWYS-LAND CLUB FOR THE USE OF ITS MEMBERS. LONDON WHITING & CO., 30 & 32. SARDINIA STREET, LINCOLN'S INN FIELDS. 1888. JL 222/064 THE MONTGOMERYSHIRE PEDIGREES, THE "VISITATIONS OF WALES", by LEWIS DWNN. The project, commenced in 1884, for printing these pedigrees for the use of the Members of the Powys-land Club is now carried out. The high authority of Lewis Dwnn's Visitations, and the extreme rarity and costliness of the work in which they were first printed by the Welsh Manuscript Society in 1846, rendered it desirable that the Montgomeryshire portion of such Visitations should be placed in the hands of the Members. This has been done, with- out extra cost, as part of the publications of the Club. One hundred extra copies have been printed before the type was distributed, which are intended to be offered to Members of the Club in the first instance. Any not taken by them will be offered for sale to the public. INTRODUCTION. To aid the memory in cherishing and perpetuating the record of what is honourable and of good report in families, has been pro- nounced "the science of fools with long memories." If wisdom were always associated with a short or tarnished one, we might accept such a dictum; but, as this is not so, we may safely refer else- where for a more truthful definition of so well-abused and mis- represented a study as genealogy.

  • Bryn Mawr | Maentwrog | Gwynedd | Ll41 3Yy
BRYN MAWR | MAENTWROG | GWYNEDD | LL41 3YY regional | national | international Menai Bridge, North Wales | tel: 01248 711999 regional | national | international Peace, tranquillity, a gentler pace of life all wrapped and enveloped in beautiful countryside and spectacular views, Bryn Mawr must surely offer the quality of lifestyle that most of us seek, but seldom find. Originally built in the 1840’s this house does seem to exude a sense of self, and one can imagine this to have been a gentleman’s gracious country estate. There is a feel of refinement and elegance balanced perfectly with a warm welcoming atmosphere that is almost impossible to ignore. The current owners have enjoyed the warmth of Bryn Mawr for ten very happy years. For them, the first view was all that was needed, and they explained that from the very moment they walked in, they knew immediately that this would be ‘the’ house, and the decision was made before they even left the property. One can well understand why – Bryn Mawr does have much to offer. Rarely do you see a house and grounds of this calibre set with such picture perfect surroundings combining to give a truly inspirational place to live afforded with incredible privacy and tranquility. The expansive grounds include approximately 18 acres of private woodlands with tall oaks, carpets of bluebells and streams running through. There are sizeable paddocks, orchards and a dedicated vegetable garden provides the house with all its needs. Set within the grounds is a cottage which reputedly dates back to the 1600’s and the accommodations within have been fully modernised to include 2 bedrooms and is currently used as a guest suite, but it would also be ideal as accommodation for a nanny, housekeeper or perhaps an older teenager.
