1) An opera about this character is the subject of a long paper by University of Miami music professor Jeffrey Stern, in which he argues that opera should be considered among the canon of American opera classics along with the works of Menotti and Copeland. That opera about this character features an aria in which another character describes watching this man and seeing “a Glimmer of hope until the very last minute”. That opera about this character is by William Schuman and is called The Mighty this character. A literary work about this character describes a “pall-like silence [falling]” after Cooney died at first, and Barrows did the same. That poem describes this man’s visage shining with a smile of Christian charity, while later the air shattered by the force of his blow. That poem about him describes a situation where the Mudville Nine are losing by two, before this title character disappoints a stadium full of fans by striking out. For 10 points, identify this character in an 1888 poem often used to teach introductory poetry, the most enduring work of Ernest Thayer. The Benefits of Solar Power
The Benefits of Solar Power and the future possibilities for Wyckoff By: Camille Dash What is Solar Power and how does it work? 2 Solar Energy ⊷ Solar energy harnesses the energy from the sun, and transforms it into power that can be used by humans 3 Solar Cells/PV ⊷ Photovoltaic cells, or solar panels are the more widely known method of harnessing solar energy ⊷ PV cells are made of semi-conductive material (usually silicon), and when the sunlight hits the solar cells, some electrons are released from their atoms and flow through the material, generating electricity. 4 Solar-Thermal Power Plants ⊷ On a larger scale, these power plants concentrate heat from the sun to use as a power source ⊷ The heat boils water, which drives a steam turbine to create electricity (similar to coal or nuclear power plants) 5 Benefits of Solar Panels Environmental, Health and Financial 6 Environmental Benefits of switching to solar power 7 Environmental Benefits ⊷ Compared to the way Americans manufacture the majority of electricity, through burning coal and natural gas, VS. solar power is green and abundant ⊷ The amount of energy from the sun that reaches Earth in one hour is enough to power the world for one year 8 Environmental Benefits ⊷ Switching to solar helps the fight against climate change, as it doesn’t put carbon dioxide into the atmosphere like burning fossil fuels does ⊷ Clean energy 9 Environmental Benefits According to US In NY, switching to Energy Information solar would eliminate Administration, the the amount of average CT home uses emissions -

Kahlil Gibran a Tear and a Smile (1950)
“perplexity is the beginning of knowledge…” Kahlil Gibran A Tear and A Smile (1950) STYLIN’! SAMBA JOY VERSUS STRUCTURAL PRECISION THE SOCCER CASE STUDIES OF BRAZIL AND GERMANY Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Susan P. Milby, M.A. * * * * * The Ohio State University 2006 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Melvin Adelman, Adviser Professor William J. Morgan Professor Sarah Fields _______________________________ Adviser College of Education Graduate Program Copyright by Susan P. Milby 2006 ABSTRACT Soccer playing style has not been addressed in detail in the academic literature, as playing style has often been dismissed as the aesthetic element of the game. Brief mention of playing style is considered when discussing national identity and gender. Through a literature research methodology and detailed study of game situations, this dissertation addresses a definitive definition of playing style and details the cultural elements that influence it. A case study analysis of German and Brazilian soccer exemplifies how cultural elements shape, influence, and intersect with playing style. Eight signature elements of playing style are determined: tactics, technique, body image, concept of soccer, values, tradition, ecological and a miscellaneous category. Each of these elements is then extrapolated for Germany and Brazil, setting up a comparative binary. Literature analysis further reinforces this contrasting comparison. Both history of the country and the sport history of the country are necessary determinants when considering style, as style must be historically situated when being discussed in order to avoid stereotypification. Historic time lines of significant German and Brazilian style changes are determined and interpretated. -
