The indigenous people of Malaysia represent about 12 % of the population. There is a great misbalance in the distribution of the indigenous people between the peninsula and the Malaysian parts of Borneo. 2. The indigenous people on the peninsula are collectively called Orang Asli. With 150,000 people, they constitute 0.6 % of the national population. Though all are labelled as as Orang Asli, they are not necessarily genetically or culturally related. There are 18 ethnic groups which are divided into three main groupings: Negrito, Senoi and Proto- Malay. 3. In Sarawak, the indigenous people are called Orang Ulu or Dayak. They represent about 50 % of the 2.5 million people living in Sarawak. The indigenous people of Sabah, the Anak Negeri, constitute 47.4 % of the population. 4. In Sabah and Sarawak customary land rights are widely recognized by the law, which has been in place since the British colonial rule. However, they are not properly implemented and even ignored by the government to provide the land for large-scale resource extractions and plantations. Peninsula 5. All the transcripts were coded and categorised and then ‘thematised’ using the software package for handling qualitative data, NVivo 8. Results: Despite variations in locations, there were five agreed prohibited food items during the postpartum period: cooking oil, salt, monosodium glutamate, sugar, and meat from game or domesticated animals. Dietary restrictions begin immediately after childbirth and varied from seven, eight, and fourteen days to one month.

    The Ecological Functions of Asian Elephants in the Sundaic Rainforest: Herbivory and Seed Dispersal A thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham Malaysia for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Lisa Ong 2020 Statement of word count: Number of words contained in the document including reference and appendices: 83451 Abstract Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) are among the last remaining megaherbivores in the Sundaic rainforests. In this thesis, I aimed to improve our understanding of the ecological roles of rainforest-dwelling Asian elephants through their herbivory and seed dispersal behaviours. A comprehensive review in Chapter One revealed that there have been few investigations of their interactions with the community and the habitats they live in. In Chapter Two, I advanced our understanding of Asian elephants in modifying the rainforest structure by quantifying their diet selection and herbivory impacts. The principal foods of Asian elephants in rainforests were palms (39% of total trunkfuls consumed) and trees (30%). They preferred monocots, particularly palms (preference ratio=4.6; below 1=avoidance) that are not abundant in the forest, and most monocots sustained high damage due to elephant foraging (above 40% in foraged patches). Their feeding behaviour was associated with a reduced palm density in the Royal Belum rainforest where elephants roam, as compared to a forest lacking elephants in Krau Wildlife Reserve. Although large tree saplings (around 21 cm diameter) were vulnerable to elephant damage, they had high recovery rates, and elephant herbivory is likely not the sole factor causing lower tree sapling density in Belum. Asian elephants are important seed dispersers. In Chapter Three, I recorded rare interactions of Asian elephants and a large-fruited rainforest tree, Irvingia malayana (Irvingiaceae) through the use of camera-traps.

The Temiar people, over the years, have become more vocal; but what can the voice of a small minority do? Until now, basic human rights are unheard of in the Orang Asli of Peninsula Malaysia. In this paper, we aim to examine how self-sufficiency can be promoted amongst this forgotten group of people. To understand the situation at the present point of time, an analysis of the state of Kelantan must be inspected. In the first section, we will identify what event provoked the cry the Temiar tribe in Kelantan, which led to their recent protests. The impact of deforestation and land usage over the years will also be analysed. A policy of providing land distribution of 12.1406 hectares (30 acres) to each family and its role in increasing self-reliance among this particular indigenous tribe will be further explained. A model referenced in this analysis will be the FELDA Scheme, which carries the gist of a solution, but unfortunately, was unsuccessful. In addition to the policy proposal, a budget of less than RM 5 million will be required by the Federal Government.
