CHAPTER 6 English for the Indigenous People of Sarawak: Focus on the Bidayuhs Patricia Nora Riget and Xiaomei Wang Introduction Sarawak covers a vast land area of 124,450 km2 and is the largest state in Malaysia. Despite its size, its population of 2.4 million people constitutes less than one tenth of the country’s population of 30 million people (as of 2015). In terms of its ethnic composition, besides the Malays and Chinese, there are at least 10 main indigenous groups living within the state’s border, namely the Iban, Bidayuh, Melanau, Bisaya, Kelabit, Lun Bawang, Penan, Kayan, Kenyah and Kajang, the last three being collectively known as the Orang Ulu (lit. ‘upriver people’), a term that also includes other smaller groups (Hood, 2006). The Bidayuh (formerly known as the Land Dayaks) population is 198,473 (State Planning Unit, 2010), which constitutes roughly 8% of the total popula- tion of Sarawak. The Bidayuhs form the fourth largest ethnic group after the Ibans, the Chinese and the Malays. In terms of their distribution and density, the Bidayuhs are mostly found living in the Lundu, Bau and Kuching districts (Kuching Division) and in the Serian district (Samarahan Division), situated at the western end of Sarawak (Rensch et al., 2006). However, due to the lack of employment opportunities in their native districts, many Bidayuhs, especially youths, have migrated to other parts of the state, such as Miri in the east, for job opportunities and many have moved to parts of Peninsula Malaysia, espe- cially Kuala Lumpur, to seek greener pastures. Traditionally, the Bidayuhs lived in longhouses along the hills and were involved primarily in hill paddy planting. -

KARLWacana ANDERBECK Vol. 14 No., The 2 Malayic-speaking(October 2012): 265–312Orang Laut 265 The Malayic-speaking Orang Laut Dialects and directions for research KARL ANDERBECK Abstract Southeast Asia is home to many distinct groups of sea nomads, some of which are known collectively as Orang (Suku) Laut. Those located between Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula are all Malayic-speaking. Information about their speech is paltry and scattered; while starting points are provided in publications such as Skeat and Blagden (1906), Kähler (1946a, b, 1960), Sopher (1977: 178–180), Kadir et al. (1986), Stokhof (1987), and Collins (1988, 1995), a comprehensive account and description of Malayic Sea Tribe lects has not been provided to date. This study brings together disparate sources, including a bit of original research, to sketch a unified linguistic picture and point the way for further investigation. While much is still unknown, this paper demonstrates relationships within and between individual Sea Tribe varieties and neighbouring canonical Malay lects. It is proposed that Sea Tribe lects can be assigned to four groupings: Kedah, Riau Islands, Duano, and Sekak. Traditionally the avatars of highland tropical forests, today they are displaced, in a foreign setting, forced to pick up new trade and skills to survive the demands of national economic advancement. Forced relocation did not promise jobs, but necessity of survival forced them to submit to menial jobs at construction sites and plantations to ensure that food is available for the household. Today, a new model of social entrepreneurship is introduced to the Penan to help access their available skills and resources to encourage the development of business endeavors to ensure inclusive development and sustainable livelihood of the Penan. Interviews and field observation results analysed show that the Penan are not afraid of setting their own markers in the business arena. Further analysis of the situation show that the success of the business is reliant not just on the resilience and hard work of the Penan but also the friendly business environment. Bab Ii Budaya Dan Karakteristik Orang Asli
BAB II BUDAYA DAN KARAKTERISTIK ORANG ASLI Istilah Orang Asal merujuk pada kelompok suku-suku yang menetap diwilayah Sabah, Sarawak dan Semenanjung Malaysia sebelum kemerdekaan Malaysia. Di Sabah, istilah Orang Asal dikenal dengan sebutan Anak Negeri dengan total populasi 1.270.979 atau sekitar 40% dari jumlah total penduduk di wilayah Sabah. Anak Negeri ini terdiri dari 72 sub etnis diantaranya Dusun, Kadazan, Murut, Rungsu, Bajau, Bisaya, Brunei, Cagayan, Gana, Idahan, Iranun, Kalabakan, Kedayan, dan lainnya. Di Sarawak sendiri, kelompok orang asal yang menempati wilayah tersebut terdiri dari 28 sub etnis Orang Asal yang dikategorikan sebagai suku Dayak dan Orang Ulu. Pada tahun 2010 jumlah populasi Orang Asal Sarawak sebesar 71,2% dari jumlah populasi di Sarawak atau sekitar 1.759.808 jiwa. Kelompok terbesar kedua yakni suku Iban sekitar 29% dari total populasi dan ketiga yakni suku Bidayuh (Nicholas, 2014, hal. 2). Di Semenanjung Malaysia sendiri Orang Asal lebih dikenal dengan istilah Orang Asli. Orang Asli sendiri merupakan kelompok etnis heterogen yang terbagi dalam 95 sub etnis atau suku. Orang Asli yang diyakini datang dari wilayah China dan Tibet ini telah menepati wilayah semenanjung Malaysia sejak 5000 tahun yang lalu dan merupakan etnis pertama yang mempati wilayah tersebut. Orang Asli diklasifikasikan kembali oleh Jabatan Kemajuan Orang Asli (JAKOA) menjadi 18 sub etnis yang terdidi dari tiga sub-grup utama yakni Semang 21 (Negrito) , Senoi dan Melayu Aborigin (Proto Melayu). (Masron, Masami, & Ismail, 2007, hal. 77). 2.1 Perbedaan Orang Asli Dalam undang-undang negara Malaysia atau akta Orang Asli 1954 (Aboriginal People Act 1954) ini disebutkan bahwasannya, yang termasuk atau tergolong sebagai Orang Asli ialah mereka yang berbicara bahasa Orang Asli, mengikuti cara hidup, adat dan kepercayaan Orang Asli ataupun keturunan dari laki-laki Orang Asli. -

This study uncovers the potential of traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) from the perspective of indigenous communities in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, and explores how TEK helps them to observe and respond to local climate change. Data were collected through interviews and field work observations and analysed using thematic analysis based on the TEK framework. The results indicated that these communities have observed a significant increase in temperature, with uncertain weather and seasons. Consequently, drought and wildfires have had a substantial impact on their livelihoods. However, they have responded to this by managing their customary land and resources to ensure food and resource security, which provides a respectable example of the sustainable management of terrestrial and inland ecosystems. The social networks and institutions of indigenous communities enable collective action which strengthens the reciprocal relationships that they rely on when calamity strikes. -

1 Aslian: Mon-Khmer of the Malay Peninsula. James A. Matisoff University of California, Berkeley Depending from the Southeast Asian mainland like “a long-necked bottle or an Indian club,”1 the Malay Peninsula lies in tropical splendor, separated from the island of Sumatra by the peaceful tidal waters of the Strait of Malacca. In the geological past, before the sinking of the Sunda Shelf, the west (‘Selangor’) coast of Malaya and the east coast of Sumatra were in fact connected by land—and at an even earlier period the two coastlines must have fit neatly together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle (see Map 1). * This monograph was originally written in 1982-83, almost twenty years ago now, with the intention of incorporating it into the Mon-Khmer chapter of my long-suffering book, Languages of Mainland Southeast Asia. This book, to be published eventually in the Language Surveys series (familiarly know as the “green books”) by Cambridge University Press, is still far from completion, but will hopefully appear sometime during the 21st century. Meanwhile it has become clear that this study of the Aslian branch of Mon-Khmer is far too long and detailed to serve merely as part of a single chapter of a general book on Southeast Asian languages. However, in view of the fact that no other overall treatment of the Aslian languages has appeared in the past 20 years, perhaps the time has come to publish it separately. Since I am certainly no specialist in Mon-Khmer, I have obviously had to rely on the true masters of the field, especially the works of the two preeminent Aslianists, Gérard Diffloth and Geoffrey Benjamin, both of whom have been kind enough to approve of my attempts to summarize their research. -

This study documented ethnomedical knowledge of plants used for the treatment of tuberculosis (TB) and its related symptoms as practiced by the Jakun community of Kampung Peta, situated in Endau Rompin Johor National Park, Johor, Malaysia. Eight key informants were selected by snowball sampling technique and data about medicinal plants were collected by semistructured interviews, participatory observations, and focus group. Qualitative analysis was undertaken using thematic analysis. There were 23 species of plants (22 genera, 20 families) documented and herbarium specimens were deposited at the UTHM Herbarium. Dipterocarpus sublamellatus was recorded for the first time with ethnomedical uses while other species were previously reported. The qualitative approach employed in this study demonstrates the emic perspective in terms of perceptions on traditional herbal medicine, transfer of knowledge, significant taboos related thwi medicinal plants, and their conservation efforts.
