Summary – Entomology, the branch of zoology which studies insects and their diversity at all levels, has continuously developed in Italy, under different angles, ever since the clas- sical ancient times. In this brief analysis we start from the beginning of the XVIIth century, with Francesco Stelluti, «Lincei» Academic, who was the first to study insects through a microscope and by their dissection, and from the XVIIIth century, with the first applications of the Linnean nomenclature to our fauna. The present day is mainly reached through the Academics of the Italian Society of Sciences who, with various approaches, were lovers and students of the subject. Among the founders of the «Accademia dei XL» in 1782, Felice Fontana and Lazzaro Spallanzani showed entomological interests within their eclectic production. In 1786 two great entomologists, Domenico Cirillo and Pietro Rossi, made their appearance. The former was able to couple his scientific work with his political passion for liberty and the unity of Italy (he was in fact executed); the latter became the first Professor of entomology («Insec- tology», at the University of Pisa) in the world. During the following century, between 1791 and 1868, a number of scientists from the Academy published entomological works: Carlo Amoretti, Michele Rosa, Antonmaria Vassalli Eandi, Floriano Caldani, Ottaviano Targioni- Tozzetti, Filippo Re, Vincenzo Dandolo, Giovacchino Carradori, Giuseppe Raddi, Giovan Battista Amici, Antonio Alessandrini, Giuseppe Gené, Cosimo Ridolfi, Michele Medici, Massimiliano Spinola, Abramo Massalongo, Guglielmo Gasparrini, Filippo De Filippi, Fi- lippo Parlatore.
