Abstracts and Biographies
Abstracts and Biographies 1 THURSDAY 19 JULY 2018 KEYNOTE LECTURE Occultism and the homme fatale in Robert Smythe Hichens’s Flames: A London Phantasy Patricia Pulham (University of Surrey) Decadent literature is often characterised by lives lived at the fringes of convention. While the intersections between Victorian literature and the supernatural in its various forms have been the topic of considerable critical commentary, the significance of occultism in decadent literature remains relatively underexplored. In contrast, occultism’s contribution to modernist literature, particularly to the work of W.B. Yeats and his circle has been debated extensively. This paper will consider Robert Smythe Hichens’s Flames: A London Phantasy (1897). While Hichens is perhaps best known to fin-de-siècle scholars as a satirist, and author of The Green Carnation (1894), his interest in the occult emerges not only in Flames, – a work that has much in common with Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray – but also in his non-fiction writings on Egypt, and in his 1911 novel, The Dweller on the Threshold. Focusing on the homme fatale, this paper will examine how and why this familiar figure is aligned in Hichens’s novel with the dangerous allure of the occult. Biography Patricia Pulham is Professor of Victorian Literature, Secretary of the British Association for Victorian Studies and editor of the EUP journal, Victoriographies. She is author of Art and the Transitional Object in Vernon Lee’s Supernatural Tales (2008) and has published several edited collections on Victorian and neo-Victorian topics, as well as a range of articles on nineteenth-century writers including Wilkie Collins, Thomas Hardy, Oscar Wilde, and A. -

The thyroid gland is found in the neck, below the thyroid cartilage (which forms the laryngeal prominence, or "Adam's apple"). The isthmus (the bridge between the two lobes of the thyroid) is located inferior to the cricoid cartilage. The thyroid gland controls how quickly the body uses energy, makes proteins, and controls how sensitive the body is to other hormones. It participates in these processes by producing thyroid hormones, the principal ones being triiodothyronine (T ) and thyroxine which can sometimes be referred to as tetraiodothyronine (T ). These hormones 3 4 regulate the rate of metabolism and affect the growth and rate of function of many other systems in the body. T and 3 T are synthesized from both iodine and tyrosine. -

The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal An Invitation to Nominate Candidates The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal On February 6, 2012, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will mark the 60th anniversary of her accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada–an occasion marked only once before by her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria, in 1897. In celebration of this event, a commemorative medal has been created. The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal is a visible and tangible way to recognize 60 000 outstanding Canadians of all ages and from all walks of life, who have built and continue to build this caring society and country through their service, contributions and achievements. To ensure that every field of activity is recognized, partnering organizations have been invited to select candidates from their community or organization for this national honour. The complete list of partnering organizations will be available on the Governor General’s website, www.gg.ca/diamondjubilee. Please note that members of the general public are welcome to contact members of Parliament, senators, lieutenant governors, territorial commissioners, or provincial and territorial premiers to suggest names of candidates. Recommendations can also be made to non- governmental organizations participating in this program, but only for individuals affiliated with these organizations. This medal program is one of the elements of the year-long Diamond Jubilee celebrations. The Chancellery of Honours, as part of the Office of the Secretary to the Governor General, administers the program. He was the last Emperor of India, and the first Head of the Commonwealth. As the second son of King George V, he was not expected to inherit the throne and spent his early life in the shadow of his elder brother, Edward. He served in the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force during World War I, and after the war took on the usual round of public engagements. He married Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1923, and they had two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret. George's elder brother ascended the throne as Edward VIII on the death of their father in 1936. However, less than a year later Edward revealed his desire to marry the divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson. British Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin advised Edward that for political and Formal portrait, c. 1940–46 religious reasons he could not marry Mrs Simpson and remain king. Edward abdicated in order to marry, and George King of the United Kingdom and the British ascended the throne as the third monarch of the House of Dominions (more...) Windsor. Reign 11 December 1936 – 6 February On the day of his accession, the parliament of the Irish Free 1952 State removed the monarch from its constitution. -
