White and Andrea Baldi This study examines the “self- identity” of the Triestino-Istrian writer, Fulvio Tomizza, and it discusses the nexus nation-language identity. Tomizza’s claim of ‘non-identity’ with a nation is analyzed, as well as his recurrent themes of betrayal, guilt, shame and loneliness in his mostly autobiographical literary works. My research concentrated on the developmental stages of his character, SteFano Marcovich (Tomizza’s alter ego), using the psychosocial and psychological approaches of Erik Erikson’s theory on developmental life-cycle stages and identity crises. This study claims that the author’s difficulty of national identification stems not only From his cultural environment and the turbulent socio-political and historical events, that took place in the Venezia-Giulia region, but also From the development of his own personal psyche. ii Acknowledgments KEEP YOUR DREAMS ALIVE. Places and locations are mapped throughout Fulvio Tomizza’s writings in terms of social and historical representations. Thus, it is necessary to become familiar with Tomizza’s geographical coordinates and historical events that shapped his writing. Since ancient times humans have tried to make sense of the world around them by mapping it. In the northeastern corner of the ‘Mare Adriaticum’, a land protrusion in the shape of a triangle, now called Istra, is depicted on maps from Ptolemy’s Geography, to Tabula Rogeriana to the Mappaemundi1(Mapping the World 24, 35). Several past civilizations left a mark on the heart-shaped Istrian peninsula in the Adriatic Sea on the northeastern border of today’s Italy. The name Istria, legend has it, comes from the name of the Danube’s tributary called Istro and its settlers were called Histri. Its remote history goes back to Paleolithic times. The stone piles, known as ‘castellieri’, of the legendary city of Nesazio are still visible today.2 In this area remnants of sculptures are attributed to Greek settlers. Later, Illyrian, Liburnian and Istri tribes populated this region. In the 2nd century B.C. the Romans conquered it and named it Regio X. Emperor Diocletian, later proclaimed it the province of Venetia et Histria. For 1 Al-Idrisi compiled the so called “Book of Roger”, for the Norman king of Sicily, from Ptolemy’s information from travelers and merchants in 1154. One of the ‘mappaemundi’ is a road map (circa 335) of Rome and its empire copied in a 12th century manuscript called the ‘Peutinger Road Map’ 2 The archeological excavations at Nesazio – Nesactium – Vizace (Croatian) in south eastern coast oF Istria about 10-11 km from the city of Pula uncovered “the historical reality of the legend about the glorious past of the Istrian town. Its cities witnessed the grand Roman architecture of monuments, amphitheaters, basilicas, public baths, etc. Today the Arena in Pola (Pula, Croatia) similar to the Coliseum in Rome and the Arena in Verona, attests to the splendor of the Roman era. Un motivo che consentirà di affrontare alcuni tra i problemi più scottanti della nostra epoca. Il confine è infatti ciò che segna un limite, e dunque separa, ma insieme unisce, mette in relazione. E’ il limite che bisogna darsi per cercare di superarlo. E’ la porta del confronto con noi stessi e con gli altri. E’ una linea mobile che esige una continua ridefinizione. Un concetto che la Fiera intende appunto declinare nella sua accezione di apertura e di scambio. Il confine mette in gioco un’idea di polarità, di opposizioni chiamate a misurarsi, a rispettarsi e a dialogare. E allo stesso tempo ci rimanda l’immagine complessa, paradossale e contraddittoria del mondo d’oggi. Primo paradosso: un mondo sempre più virtualizzato e globale sembrerebbe avere attenuato o addirittura abolito il concetto di separatezza, sostituito da quello di un gigantesco mercato, che consuma ovunque i medesimi prodotti. Eppure i confini cancellati dai mercati ritornano drammaticamente sia nella crescente divaricazione tra Paesi ricchi e Paesi poveri, sia nell’affermazione di esasperate identità locali, opposte le une e altre, che si risolvono in tensioni, conflitti, guerre di tutti contro tutti. Le divisioni etniche e religiose, lungi dal conciliarsi in un dialogo possibile, scatenano opposizioni sempre più radicali e devastanti, che si affidano al braccio armato dei terrorismi. La miscela di cosmopolitismo, globalizzazione e fanatismi locali produce nuovi recinti e innalza nuovi muri.

    The “Authentic” Blend: Experts Weigh in on Istrian Food By: Daša Ličen Abstract This article examines the discourses and concepts of regional Istrian gourmet heroes, who bring into being and distribute ideas on what “authentic” Istrian cuisine is. Citizens of three different countries who speak four different languages, these experts consider themselves most of all Istrian and characterize Istrian foods as alternative foods in contrast to mainstream agro-industrial varieties. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork, this essay focuses on how these experts arbitrarily use adjectives such as “authentic,” “traditional,” “natural” and others in overlapping ways which I will show create obstacles to labelling the precise terminology of each. Ultimately I argue that these descriptors are all interchangeable in the experts’ discourse(s) on Istrian food, furthermore denoting Istrian food itself, although most of the time they absolutely do not mean the same. This mishmash is nowadays one of the main elements unifying the Istrian region as such, and while similarly present in many different places, Istria’s food movement is unique, because of its geographical and historical contexts. Istria is a Northern Adriatic peninsula that is administratively divided between three European countries: Croatia (which covers approximately 90% of the peninsula), Slovenia (app. 7%), and Italy (app. 3%). In this dissertation my goal was to articulate the most influential theoretical frameworks that are used to explain the Digital Divide today and I try to give an explanation of the issue through ethnographic procedures. The goals of this research include the examination of the current Digital Divide debate, extension of the theory toward the local understanding and perception of this global phenomenon. Additionally, I wanted to identify different interpretations of the Digital Divide in three countries within one region and compare the differences and similarities in new technology usage and perceptions. Also, I was interested to see how age - which is described as one of the major Digital Divide factors - influences the relationships between older and younger generations, specifically relationships between parents and children, instructors, students and co-workers.
