Theories on representation provide a framework for the systematic analysis of the types of representation claims made by political actors. I expand on the political proximity approach—which suggests that public office seekers make more substantive than symbolic claims to their partisans than to non-aligned voters—by arguing that Canadian political parties view mainstream voters as their typical constituents and visible minorities, such as Indo-Canadians, as peripheral constituents. Consequently, campaign messages targeted at mainstream voters include more substantive claims than messages targeted at non-white voters.

Although there is a rich critical literature examining international student Volume 50, Number 4, 2020 policy in Canada, very little of it considers the views of Members of Parliament. For that reason Parliamentary debate deserves study. This paper examines MPs’ discussion of international students between 1984 and 2019, tracing themes in MP policy talk over the globalization era.     Art Spiritual Dimensions of Ukrainian Diaspora: Collective Scientific Monograph DOI 10.36074/art-sdoud.2020.chapter-9 Nataliia Fedorniak UKRAINIAN MUSICAL FOLKLORE DISCOGRAPHY AS A PRESERVING FACTOR IN UKRAINIAN DIASPORA NATIONAL SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE ABSTRACT: The presented material studies one of the important forms of transmission of the musical folklore tradition of Ukrainians in the United States and Canada during the XX – the beginning of the XXI centuries – sound recording, which is a component of the national spiritual experience of emigrants. Founded in the 1920s, the recording industry has been actively developed and has become a form of preservation and promotion of the traditional musical culture of Ukrainians in North America. Sound recordings created an opportunity to determine the features of its main genres, the evolution of forms, that are typical for each historical period of Ukrainians’ sedimentation on the American continent, as well as to understand the specifics of the repertoire, instruments and styles of performance. Leading record companies in the United States have recorded authentic Ukrainian folklore reconstructed on their territory by rural musicians and choirs. Arranged folklore material is represented by choral and bandura recordings, to which are added a large number of records, cassettes, CDs of vocal-instrumental pop groups and soloists, where significantly and stylistically diversely recorded secondary Ukrainian folklore (folklorism). INTRODUCTION. The social and political situation in Ukraine (starting from the XIX century) caused four emigration waves of Ukrainians and led to the emergence of a new cultural phenomenon – the art and folklore of Ukrainian emigration, i.e. diaspora culture. Having found themselves in difficult ambiguous conditions, where there was no favorable living environment, Ukrainian musical folklore began to lose its original identity and underwent assimilation processes.

Cannabis is a dangerous, noxious product especially when smoked or ingested. It is a dangerous, gateway drug for many young adults. There are illegal cannabis users in my apartment complex that are dangerous and are also endangering the health of the many young children in the complex. I have presented to the City Public Health Committee as well. When I presented to the Health and Safet Committee Councillor Aiden Johnson was chairing the committee and he was complimentary in pointing out that I have been doing some good work in the community. I hope you will all continue to heed my concerns. If City Council will vote to take the high road (pun intended) and not allow Cannabis/Marijuana retailers they will set a precedent where Hamilton really is the best place to raise a child. The City will be one where children s health and developing bodies will not be negatively affected. In addition it will show to the youngsters in our community that their health is of utmost importance. There may be some money in the Cannabis industry but it will not be enough to offset the numerous mental health challenges youth face; there is a huge backlog for children/youth mental health services now as it is.

Many in Hong Kong fear they will face the same fate as the student protestors in Tiananmen Square, defenders’ lawyers, and millions of interned Uyghurs, Tibetans, and faith groups whose rights of free expression and worship are denied. We urge the Government of Canada to offer a “Safe Harbour Program” with an expedited process to grant protection and permanent residency status to Hong Kongers at risk of political persecution under the National Security Law, including international students and expatriate workers who have been involved in protest actions in Canada. Furthermore, Canada must invoke the Sergei Magnitsky Law to sanction Chinese and Hong Kong officials who instituted the National Security Law, as well as other acts violating human rights; and to ban them and their immediate family members from Canada and freeze their Canadian assets. Canada needs to work closely with international allies with shared values to institute a strong policy toward China. It is time for Canada to take meaningful action to show leadership on the world stage. More women and children in the Calgary area who have fled domestic violence will have a safe and affordable place to call home thanks to the Brenda Strafford Foundation Affordable Housing Initiative. The Government of Canada and the Government of Alberta celebrated the official opening of the 85-unit housing project today, which received close to $8 million in funding under the Canada-Alberta Affordable Housing Program. Recognizing a need for more long-term supportive housing for women and children who have fled domestic violence, the Brenda Strafford Foundation committed an additional $14 million to bring this critical housing project to Calgary. Deepak Obhrai, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Member of Parliament for Calgary East, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), and the Honourable Jonathan Denis, Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, were present at the ribbon-cutting ceremony today. “Through investments like this one, our Government is helping to make an important difference in the lives of families in need,” said Parliamentary Secretary Obhrai. “The Brenda Strafford Centre will provide a stable and supportive environment for more women and children in times of crisis.
