Locally, temperatures dropped down to or slightly below the freezing point in the mid of the month. With monthly averages between 4°C and 6°C, air temperatures were well below the values for the usually used reference period 1961 – 1990 (Ch. Lefebvre, 2013) and even a bit lower for the current reference period (1981-2010, see reference periods in Tab. 1). In December air temperatures were, on the contrary, up to 2-3°C higher than the reference values (Tab. 2). The seasonal cooling of the air proceeded very slowly in December. Although light frost occurred occasionally, temperatures rose also up to 10°C. Northern Germany was influenced predominantly by high pressure systems by that time; mostly westerly to north-westerly winds transported mild air masses into the coastal regions. In the beginning of January, north-easterly winds brought a frost period - parallel to the big storm surges in the North and Baltic Seas - which lasted for few days. Afterwards the weather situation was unstable for the rest of the month with occasionally occurring frost periods (see Fig. 1). The first persistent frost period occurred only in February when the wind changed to easterly directions. Although February was warmer than normal, daily averaged air temperatures dropped below the freezing point permanently between the 7th and 14th of February. On the 15th of February the wind changed to westerly directions and the air became milder again. Afterwards, temperatures stayed above the freezing point for the rest of the season. Summarized, the winter of 2016/2017 consisted of one weak cold period from the beginning of January up to mid-February. Temperatures were not permanently below the freezing point during this period but varied around 0°C by few degree Celsius. Ice conditions on the German North and Baltic Sea coasts The ice winter of 2016/17 consisted of three ice periods at the German North Sea coast: the first ice occurred in the beginning of January. Afterwards, there was a short ice period in mid- January and a further one in February. At the German Baltic Sea coast, ice growth took place for three times between mid-November and beginning of December, but only for few days in each period. In the beginning of January, a permanent ice cover formed regionally between 5th of January and 24th of February. The evolution of the ice winter 2016/2017 is 4 shown in Figure A1 in the appendix. Table A1 and A2 of the appendix summarize the most important ice parameters for the season. Figure 4: Ice conditions in Thiessow at the time of maximum ice extent on the German Baltic Sea coast. Courtesy of Frank Sakuth. The initial ice formation started on the 12th November on the river Schlei. In fact, this was the earliest seasonal ice formation since 1984, when the first ice was discovered in Warthe on the 1st of November. The former earliest ice formation on the river Schlei took place on the 17th November 1993. At the North Sea, ice had initially formed in Emden on the 3rd January and in Tönning on the 5th January. In Tönning ice could be found temporarily until the 16th February. At the Baltic Sea, ice persisted locally until the 24th February.

What I mean here are maps in the modern sense of the word, i.e. Graphic rep- resentations that facilitate a spatial understanding of things, concepts, conditions, processes, or events in the human world1. It is an important reservation because the line between graphic and non-graphic representations of the Earth’s surface in the Middle Ages was sometimes blurred, therefore the term mappamundi could mean either a cartographic image or a textual geographical description, and in some cases it functioned as an equivalent of the modern term “Geography”2. Consequently, there’s a tendency in the modern historiography to analyze both forms of the geographical descriptions together. However, the late medieval and early modern developments in the perception and re-constructing of the space led to distinguishing cartography as an autonomous, full-fledged discipline of knowledge, and to the general acceptance of the map in the modern sense as a basic form of presentation of the world’s surface. Most maps which will be examined in the paper were produced in this later period, so it seems justified to analyze only the “real” maps, although in a broader context of the geographical imaginations.

The adapted concept is the result of an intensive and constructive dialogue between all parties, and takes into account the evaluation of the statements as well as the results of the public consultation. “We have reviewed many alternative compensation measures and identified those which will significantly reduce the land use requirements on the Island of Rügen. We have kept our word and found a consensual solution in the interest of the farmers and the environment“, says Jens Lange, Permitting Manager Germany, Nord Stream 2 AG. The compensation measures “Wreecher See” and “Mellnitz-Üselitzer Wiek” are no longer part of the new concept. Regarding the measures “Ossen” and “Lobber See”, the spatial requirements were reduced and only discretionary and suitable areas were taken into account. Instead of the 250 hectares of arable land with a land value below 50 that were originally discussed, only about 70 hectares of arable land on the Island of Rügen will be converted into semi- natural meadows and pastures. A viable management plan is part of this compensation measure. The aim of the compensation concept is still to reduce the discharge of nutrients, particularly nitrogen, into the waters of the Rügische Bodden.

This discrepancy is a fortiori of interest as previous experimental studies showed that species like Dikerogammarus villosus and Obesogammarus crassus were able to tolerate both mesohaline and also polyhaline conditions. Two decades of invasion history in rivers and lakes have led to drastic faunal changes. If similar or analogue shifts will happen in brackish environments and if estuaries like the Stettin lagoon function not only as “a gate to the Baltic Sea” but also as a “catalyser” or acclimatisation area for invasive species remains to be seen. Die Brohmer Berge, der Galenbecker See und die Große Friedländer Wiese sind echte landschaftliche Höhepunkte- die Straßen ein Hochgenuß für Cruiser. Sehenswert in Anklam: das Otto Lilienthal- Museum. Das Peenetal-Moor bei Ducherow (hier gibt es auch ein Motorradmuseum) ist ein Muss auf dem Weg zurück nach Ueckermünde. Weiter geht es und auf bestens präparierten, kurvenreichen Nebenstrecken über Anklam wieder nach Greifswald vorbei am ehemaligen KKW Lubmin, dort gibt es eine sehr interessante Ausstellung zur Geschichte der Kernkraft. Im Fischereihafen von Freest empfehlen wir eine Pause, denn hier gibt es die leckersten Fischbrötchen südlich des Nordpols.

Non-indigenous species that have appeared in the Szczecin Lagoon (i.a. Dreissena polymorpha, Potamopvrgus antipodarum, Corophium curvispinum) and in the Pomeranian Bay (Cordylophora caspia, Mya arenaria, Balanus improvisus, Acartia tonsa) in historical time and which now are dominant components of animal communities there as well as other and less abundant (or less common) alien species in the estuary (e.g. Branchiura sowerbyi, Eriocheir sinensis, Orconectes limosus) are presented. In addition, other newcomers - Marenzelleria viridis, Gammarus tigrinus, and Pontogammarus robustoides - found in the estuary in the recent ten years are described. The significance of the sea and inland water transport in the region for introduction of non-indigenous species is discussed against the background of the distribution pattern of these recently introduced polychaete and gammarid species.
