Hove Rugby Club gratefully acknowledges the generosity of all our sponsor’s and encourages all members and supporters to avail themselves of our sponsors’ services. PRESIDENT’S NOTES
I am pleased to welcome you to Hove Rec today for the visit of local rivals, Horsham who are not only enjoying a successful season in London South East Two, but also great success across their youth teams. The recent developments of the facilities there together with the extensive site bodes well for the future. I am looking forward to welcoming Richard Ordidge, Barry Wright and Alan Fisher to the pre-match lunch.
Today’s lunch is also the second vice presidents lunch of the season and as well as renewing old friendships, we shall be remembering and celebrating absent Richard Hopkins friends at the Horsham lunch. It has been a difficult season for many club members; we have lost former president and secretary, Graham Gordon, Rick Walker, Mike Gibson and John Attfield - and Colin Lucas is very seriously ill. Of course, there is quite an overlap between membership of the Hove Club and of Hove Rugby Club – and that this was in evidence both at Graham Gordon’s funeral, conducted by Father Peter Clegg, and at the wake afterwards at the Hove Club. Graham was given a good send off and it was heartening to witness the civility and cordiality on the day.
It has been a disappointing couple of weeks for the senior side on the pitch – an away defeat at Charlton Park and the loss of our unbeaten home record to division leaders, Dartfordians has made it more difficult for us to make the end of season play-offs. However, Charlton Park are at Dover today which, as we know well – having never won there - is not an easy place to visit. All of which means that there is still plenty to play for today.
As things stand today (March 18) we remain in second place in London and South East Division 2 while Horsham are fourth. However, Charlton Park are now only a point behind us with a game in hand. Horsham stand ready to take advantage of any slip ups but are six points behind us at present, having played the same number of games.
The club sponsor for today’s game is Rolf Berryman, the match day sponsor, Dean Brackenridge and the match ball sponsor, Specialist Global Marketing. On behalf of the club, I would like to thank you all for your continuing support which is both generous and gratefully received.
Just in case you missed the update in my letter to vice presidents, I can report that the club remains active off the field. Plans to extend the clubhouse have been prepared and we are ready to go for planning permission – a significant fund raising effort is likely to follow, but we do need to keep developing the facilities. Overplaying on the pitches remains a significant risk, which we are seeking to mitigate in the medium term through an arrangement with Cardinal Newman School to gain access to their planned 4G pitch for training purposes.
We hope that we will able to do the same thing with the club ball, which is being held at the Grand on April 28; present number of tickets sold is just under 200. Plenty of space remains – so, please, if you have not already booked your tickets (£60 per head), please do so by getting in touch with Geraldine. (geraldine.brown@ hoverugby.club) We would love to see you there.
On the 14 April we are working with the Sporting Memories Charity and the U15 girls & boys teams to capture the club history from the senior members of the club. There is also a club lunch and a first team home game that day so if you have a few tales to tell about the history of the club we would love to see you. More information on the charity is available on their website. http://www.sportingmemoriesnetwork.com/
Enjoy your afternoon. Richard Hopkins, Club President Award Winning Brighton Based Recruitment Consultancy

It is likely that they will go to L3NE - but they are up before the beak and may get penalised for not fulfilling fixtures.
Ask Mystic for more info! From above, all 3 belong strictly in L2SE but there might not be room to absorb Proud Match Ball sponsors all 3 so possibly one or more may have to go to L2SW or possibly one of L2NW/L2NE.”

Three league games left, hopefully with a playoff in addition.
Weirdly three of today’s games have neighbours in the league table playing each other.
Barking v Pulborough. These two are now relegated from L2SE after just one seasons stay. Pulborough go back whence they came to L3SE whilst poor Barking continue their slide down the leagues. Last week it would appear that Barking failed to go to Heath and that must raise the spectre of an ejection from this league and a return to an even lower league. A great shame for the current players of the club who have, through no fault of their own, been placed in this position.
Geoff Pollard Deal & Betteshanger v Heathfield. Deal are four points behind Heathfield in 10th and 11th places respectively. Deal, however, have a game in hand. The problem is that game is against Charlton Park so this game will be important to them. A win would put them level on points with Heathfield. Heathfield have a couple of tricky games to end the season whilst Deal face Pulborough away next week. This tussle will be interesting. I think Deal will win.
Haywards Heath v Dartfordians. Any thought that Dartfordians might lift their foot of the gas now they are virtually certain to win the league was dispelled last week when they beat us. They obviously want to finish the season unbeaten and last weeks display showed a very well organised and efficient team. Like teams we have seen before at this level they have an excellent driving maul. I suspect that weapon may meet its match next season in L1S. I don’t see Heath winning this.
Old Alleynians v Beckenham. Old A are 7th, Becks 8th. There is one point between them. I dont think that Beckenham will need their game in hand to retake 7th place this afternoon and, if they do win, they might overtake Dover into 6th (see below)
Dover v Charlton Park. CP are just one point behind Hove in third place with a winnable game in hand. However they need to match our result to stay that close and going down to Dover is never easy. Dover have climbed the table very well and it is always difficult to win at their place. If Dover can win then our second place looks safer. I think Dover can do it, come on Dover!
Hove v Horsham. We are second, Horsham fourth. They beat us by 5 points earlier in the season. We need to win to keep second place. Our last two games look winnable, but then so do CPs, so the playoff slot might be largely decided this weekend. I see us winning a narrow game.
Since we are reaching the end of the season I though I’d look to see what has happened to those that have been recently promoted from this league.
Hardly surprisingly Medway, last seasons champions, have done well, currently 2nd in London 1 South. Old Colfeians have fared less well and are flirting with relegation in 12th.
Previous season (15/16) Tunbridge Wells were promoted as champions and are now two leagues up in London and South East Premier League where they are 6th. Sevenoaks who accompanied them up sit 10th in L1S. Kati Innes OT SPONSORST: 07713 585 123 · E: [email protected] HOVE RUGBYwww.katiinnesot.co.uk CLUB SPONSORS
