Hove Rugby Club gratefully acknowledges the generosity of all our sponsor’s and encourages all members and supporters to avail themselves of our sponsors’ services. PRESIDENT’S NOTES

A warm welcome to all for today’s 1st XV match against Deal and Betteshangar, our last league game and one which will decide whether or not we go forward to the play-offs for promotion to One South. If we win with a bonus point, we will be assured of second place in our division () and therefore contest the third promotion spot with the second placed team in , which looks certain to be Old Reigatians. If we do go forward, the play off will be an away fixture. We are also through to the Sussex Cup Final to be played at on April 28 against the winners of the match between and Haywards Heath, Richard Hopkins which takes place today. However, we will have to do it all without Charlie Dagwell, our hugely promising no.8, who suffered a compound leg break last week at Heathfield. I know I speak for all of you in sending best wishes to Charlie for a quick and complete recovery; he is hoping to be at the game this afternoon. So, still lots to look forward not only for the senior men’s side but throughout the club – the under 8s have been at a festival in Bournemouth this week and the under 11s will be playing in the Horsham festival tomorrow. Both the under 13 and under 18 girls are at home tomorrow. Today, the Beefeaters and the Fusiliers are both away – at and respectively. It is the time of the season to say thank you to all those who have contributed so much to making Hove Rugby Club a great place to be. I would like to express my gratitude –and yours – both to the Executive, which has continued to do a fantastic job with good humour and great commitment, and to all the volunteers throughout the club. This is, of course, clearly evidenced on a week by week basis, but it is still reassuring for it to be recognised by others, as it was last week, when the club hosted cup finals on behalf of Sussex RFU. The following are extracts from the messages received from Gavin Ross, Sussex RFU president and from Ken Nicholls, Sussex Competitions organiser: Likewise a very good day brilliantly hosted, thank you Adam and Geraldine. May I thank you both , Jill and the catering dept for a greatly hosted day. As always Hove were top of the pile looking after Sussex and the clubs on show. Thank you also to all our sponsors, who support the club financially and get what we are about. We would not be able to operate without you and we are grateful for such a productive partnership benefitting the whole club. Today, particular thanks to Lez Hood, match day sponsor and to Malcolm McCullogh (Specialised Global Marketing), match ball sponsor and Warren Knight. This programme includes an In Memoriam page with brief tributes to Colin Lucas and Graham Gordon, two former presidents of the club who have recently passed away. Colin’s funeral takes place next Monday at Downs Crematorium (3pm) and afterwards at the Hove Club. Finally, a reminder that the AGM will be held on 31 May at the club at 7.30pm – for the first time in (twenty) years Andy Ward will not be standing for election. I would just like to put on record the club’s appreciation for the fantastic work that Andy has done for the club and the huge commitment that he has made to it. It has been enormous and it is hard to think of too many others who have made such a contribution. I am sure that this will be recognised more formally in due course, but it is definitely appropriate for it to be recorded today and for you to have a chance to say thank you. Have a great afternoon – I am sure you will. As I write I understand that we have around 100 attendees for lunch.

Enjoy your afternoon. Richard Hopkins, Club President www.friendsofhoverfc.org.uk

COLIN LUCAS www.friendsofhoverfc.org.uk Colin joined the Club in September 1964, when he appeared at the trials hand in hand with Brian “Dolly” Dearson. He very quickly established himself as a fine front row forward in the 1st XV, a position that he held until about 1970 when he converted to coaching, having qualified on the Don Rutherford programme. Colin was social secretary of the Club in 1968/9. Married in 1962 (I think) to Valerie, he took great care not to let their two daughters anywhere near the clubhouse. The glorious twilight of his playing days was spent in the Yeoman XV, Colin Lucas forming part of the legendary front row of Elcock, de St.Croix and Lucas.

HELP US HELP YOU! Colin usually took a quiet back seat in those traditional rampaging tour days of the 1960’s and 70’s. CS are miles in front and are promoted. Medway (remember them) are favourites for the play off place with L1N runner (currently with Brentwood as champions). However, are still in the mix and pay yet pip Medway.

Dartfordians are promoted from our league and either us or Charlton Park will get the play off spot with us current favourites. In LSW3, are promoted as champions and Old Reigatian the likely play off opposition. They also look favourite for home advantage as that is given to the better placed position in your league and they are edging us at the moment. But the fat lady hasn’t stopped singing yet…

It is interesting to see that Crawley have suffered in L3SE in the same fashion as Barking in our league and we know that they (Crawley) had been trying for a long time to escape the clutches of the Sussex leagues. I also note that (remember them!) who used to beat us regularly in L1S on their way to greater things have suffered like so many clubs who think buying a team is the answer and now from the top of Level 6 the go down to Level 9. And being as they have a great ground with a grandstand and everything.

At level 6 and 7, level transfer is also a possibility. Barking, for instance, really should have been in L2NE but were level transferred to L2SE. It is likely that they will go to L3NE - but they are up before the beak and may get penalised for not fulfi lling fi xtures.

From L1S above, all 3 belong strictly in L2SE but there might not be room to absorb all 3 so possibly one or more may have to go to L2SW or possibly one of L2NW/L2NE.”

Today’s visitors Deal still have to entertain Charlton Park (our rivals for the play off spot) but if we beat Deal today and get the 4 try bonus then CP cannot catch us.

It doesn’t feel like it’s been that long since we welcomed Old Dunstonian in a pre-season friendly on a beautiful summer day. Hopefully by the time you’re reading this it’ll be another sunny day and some great conditions for some free-flowing rugby. I’m sure all of you will know the importance of today’s game in making the playoff and there’s also the Sussex Cup Final coming up on the 28th but I wanted to share a quick overview of how the other senior teams have fared this season.

Women’s 1st XV The women’s 1st team have completed all of their league fixtures and currently sit in third place, Phil Ward although Henley in fourth have two games in hand and look likely to overtake Hove making for a fourth place finish. A season that was strong in places, including defeating league champions Thurrock at home was also hit by a few narrow defeats. With the 2nd XV in place this year there was a demand for players and that meant a smaller bench for the 1st XV, coupled with a number of injuries throughout the season. That said, the team has been building in strength and will be looking forward to competing with the top teams again next season.

Men’s 2nd XV Getting relegated from despite finishing 5th (either out of 8 or our of 12 depending on how you judge it) was always going to be tough. The Sussex Reserves league wasn’t quite as bad as we’d feared, although there were a few notable mismatches in the league. Being placed against 1st team in the Sussex Cup was also a strange decision. Despite the challenges, the Beefeaters finished second in their league and picked up home and away wins against champions Brighton.

Women’s 2nd XV Opportunities for new female players have always been hard to come by - it’s very difficult to give a player their first experience of rugby at level 2! So having a full second team competing in a league has been a big priority for a couple of years now. While there’s been a knock on effect on the 1st XV, over time this trend will reverse - there’s already been one regular player step up from 2nd XV To 1st XV this season. In their league, Hove currently sit in second place with a home fixture (tomorrow) against top of the table Heathfield. If Hove win, then the league title is theirs - not too bad for a debut season. They have also never lost at home since their formation two years ago!

Men’s 3rd XV A win in the Sussex Salver but a loss in the overall final meant that the 3rd XV have already picked up some silverware this season. Their league season has been fraught with postponements and cancellations making it difficult to build momentum. As a sign of how much impact this has had, current league leaders have played all 14 of their league games. Hove have played 11 and one of those had to be a double header just to get through the games! Hove now have three games in three weeks. Much like the men’s 1st XV the safest way to the league win is to win all of their games although there are a few mathematical possibilities for them to lose one game and still win. Having only lost one game this season (which was against Lewes away) there’s every chance of the team picking up the title in a few weeks.

On a side note, it’s been great to see so many U18s players stepping up to make senior debuts, and for the first time this has happened for both boys and girls. It’s amazing to see the teams full of home-grown players and it’s long been our aspiration to develop our own people. When we first decided to commit to being an amateur club there were a few eyebrows raised - and some choice words spoken - but I think the results this season (every team in the top half of their league) have demonstrated that a development approach can bring results and hopefully next season we can demonstrate that it can bring sustainable results! Hope you all enjoy the game!

Mystic Geoff 14th April

Last weekend of regular season although hopefully we have one more game.

Barking v Dartfordians. Oh how dreadful is the RFU fixture machine. To finish their time in L2SE Barking, who have scored just one point all season, have to meet Dartfordians who are promoted having lost just one game all season. Wouldn’t it be fun if Barking won, not very likely though. Where Barking go next is, as mentioned elsewhere in this programme, subject to a visit to LDOC/ RFU to explain fixtures not honoured. Barking, as many will have noticed, are North of the Thames and properly belong in leagues with a big N in them.

Haywards Heath v Horsham. A humdinger of a local derby to finish the season. Heath are Geoff Pollard currently fifth, five points behind Horsham. So a win with a bonus for Heath would bring them level. Unless they beat Horsham by around 45 points they will stay fifth on points difference. Horsham will not want that to happen so any sort of bonus for them would keep them clear on points. I actually expect a tight game, a win for Heath but without a try bonus and a losing bonus for Horsham.

Old Alleynians v Charlton Park. CP need to outperform us in this game to give themselves a chance of grabbing second spot in their game in hand over Deal. I suspect they will manage a bonus win. Old A have nothing to play for in league position, but pride can be a powerful motivator.

Pulborough v Beckenham. Pulborough are relegated, which is a shame because they own one of the most attractively located club houses in the South East. Beckenham have had a disappointing season and need to win to stay in front of Dover. I doubt they will find that a problem.

Dover v Heathfield. Dover have had a good run up the league and are notoriously difficult to beat at home. They have lost twice at home this season, to Dartfordians and Haywards Heath. They should have little problem in beating Heathfield, probably with a bonus point. What a great last game of the season for Heathfield, all the way to deepest to lose.

Hove v Deal & Betteshanger. This is a must win game for us, hopefully with a try bonus. Deal finished third from bottom, comfortably clear of relegation since their margin to Pulborough is currently 20 points. Just to cheer Deal up after dealing with us (see what I just did!) next week they have to play Charlton Park in the rearranged game, although that is at Deal. If we win with a try bonus then next weeks game is meaningless. If we win without a try bonus and if CP have picked up 5 points at Old A it all might come down to points difference. However a glance at the table shows we are 136 points better off than CP today so whilst we will have to wait a week for confirmation we should still finish second.

Relegation from L1S to L2SE is hopefully of technical interest only, because we will be in L1S next season. Already and are relegated, both presumably into L2SE, assuming we get to and then win the playoff. The third relegation slot is a very tight battle between Thurrock and old friends Old Colfeieans. Currently the points gap is four.

This weekend both will probably lose but next weekend Old C are home to already relegated Maidstone whilst Thurrock are away at fifth place Cobham. A bonus win for Old C with Thurrock getting nothing would keep Old C safe.

If Old C come down the famously confusing level transfer machine comes into play. The problem is that all the relegated sides will be L2SE and even if we win the playoff something will have to give. If we lose the playoff L2SE would be gaining three sides down but sending only one up. Someone will be moving North or West to balance up.
