I hope all visiting players and supporters enjoy their day at the home of Medway RFC. Tottonians have a well-deserved reputation of being fantastic hosts to visiting clubs and I really hope we all endeavour to try to match their famous hospitality. Contractors Limited Totts have experienced an indifferent start to the season and currently lie eleventh in the league table. However, closer examination shows that they have registered losing bonus points (for finishing within 7 points) in five out of eight of their losses showing that they have been extremely competitive in most games. Our own form took a bit of a dive last week at Westcombe Park where we never really got into the game and were well beaten on the day. So, for today’s encounter, our boys will be keen to get back to winning ways whereas the boys from Hampshire will be going all out to avenge too many narrow losses with an impressive away win. I am pleased to report that although early days, the club house improvements seem to be having an effect and we have seen a sharp increase in private hires for parties and other meetings etc. Our financial position has steadily stabilised after the extension costs and we are now confident to press ahead with the procurement of some new bar furniture. Lead times are quite long so unfortunately this may not arrive before Xmas. Next week, Saturday 1st December, we are holding the past players lunch before the league game against Brighton. Now that we have more space in the extended clubhouse, we have decided that we will open up the invitation to other club members and guests who would like to attend this great social gathering. Please do group together with your friends and come along to enjoy the lunch, the game and possibly the start of Xmas festivities! Please contact myself or Jez Saxby to reserve your place. In addition, please note that we are holding a Xmas lunch before the Dartfordians game on the 15th The complete building service December – contact Mark Marriott to reserve your place. I hope everyone enjoys their time at Medway RFC today. Matt Kuhn and Gordon Stone have also been shortlisted for their sterling club work in the ‘unsung hero’ kick-start your financial planning category. The 1st XV squad news is that scrum half James Dance suffered a bad fracture to one of his fingers at Westcombe Park and will out until February following surgery on Tuesday. Captain Mike Gardner is still unavailable for family reasons. Billy Humphrey returns to the squad this week. Alfie Orris returns to training on Tuesday. Sam Garofalo returns to training on Thursday. Kent Under 18s are using Medway RFC as their base again this season and we are delighted to say we have 3 players in the squad. Max Bullock, Matthew Beard and Cullen Daly. Well done to them. The Medway RFC schools programme is in need of coaches. My first year as president has certainly had many peaks and troughs. From a very sad personal beginning to a mid-table finish and then to be relegated and so on. Following the club’s final meeting with the RFU, we both agreed that it is in all our interests to move on from the eye incident. We are now putting a firm line in the sand. Looking positively forward I have some very good things to report. On the playing front we had a very commendable season. This is down to the efforts of new Director of Rugby, Andy Foley and his team. Everyone just wanted to play rugby, after all this is what we are, a rugby club. Andy has exciting plans for next season. The new flood lights have been to the benefit of all those that have been training and we have increased the playing area at the back of the first team pitch for the junior tag-rugby section.
