ngland clinched the Grand Slam in Paris to end a thirteen year wait for the triumph and lay to rest some of the ghosts from their World Cup campaign. All the Eteams came into came into the tournament looking to improve in key areas for various reasons and Rugby Club Magazine takes a look at how things went for each side.

England

England’s results could not have been better with five wins out of five and as they look to build for the future establishing a base to build upon was perhaps the main priority. There were plenty of positives in this regard as well with Dylan Hartley, , and all looking like they may be key players for many years to come. Hartley also looked to be a fine choice as captain whilst the emergence of should mean that England’s second row has the talent and depth to be one of the best around. Add to this the improvements made at the set-piece and breakdown and England couldn’t have had a much better tournament. There is still plenty of room for improvement however and tougher tests lie ahead for Eddie Jones’ England side.

France

The appointment of Guy Novés led to the belief that France would be returning to the free flowing, unpredictable style of attacking rugby that they were once famed for. That did not quite materialise as they struggled to create the space needed to set their flair players free. The relationship between club and international rugby made it hard for a French side with a number of changes to gel and they can take heart from the fact that their best performance came in their final game. Add to that the return of Louis Picamoles and the French probably have more potential to improve between now and 2017 than any other side.

Ireland

All of the sides came into this years’ tournament with the idea that they were in transition and this was true for Ireland. Without the retired Paul O’Connell and a number of other players through injury it was always going to be difficult for them to retain their title and so it proved. There was nothing to choose between them and Wales in the first game but disappointing results against France and England meant that Ireland’s defence fell flat. Promising victories against Italy and Scotland provided optimism for the future and they have a real star in CJ Stander.

Italy

Coming into the tournament they were expected to struggle and five defeats out of five tells its own story. They threw away victory in the opening match against France and collapsed badly against England after competing for much of the game. They never really recovered from these defeats and it has to be hoped that their imminent coaching change will make a difference. The major positive for them was the centre pairing of Gonzalo Garcia and Michele Campagnaro but they need to find more test quality players if they are to progress and quieten the calls for relegation to be introduced.

Scotland Wales

Following a promising World Cup there was optimism that Wales continue to be a solid side in the Six Nations and their Scotland would demonstrate the development of their side only dropped points this time around came away to their two during this year’s Six Nations. They finish the tournament with main challengers for the title. Their performance against England plenty of reason to be optimistic for the future but yet to make an was not up to the mark for sixty minutes and it is difficult to see impact on the top sides in the Six Nations. how they will make the step from being a good side to one that was one of the standout performers across the can take on the top teams in the game. tournament and Willem Nel also has a good chance of starting for They will continue to prove a stern test for any side in the the Lions. Victory against France should not be underestimated tournament however and with a favourable fixture list next year and Scotland do continue to improve although maybe not as they will be challenging for the title. Whilst they would like to be quickly as they would like. in a better place, where they are right now is not too bad either.

“England’s results could not have been better with five wins out of five and as they look to build for the future establishing a base to build upon was perhaps the main priority.”

Eddie Jones speaks after the French game.

“I am very proud of the boys. We weren’t at our best today, but the result than playing, and the second half we were much more we battled through and really deserved the victory. It is a great positive in the way we played. achievement by the team. “The great thing is that the best is still ahead of us. We are only “I always had confidence in the team. We also host the town’s only family bonfire. Our first team pre match lunches raise money for charity. Challenges/Ambitions

“Player retention is a key issue I have alluded to already. If we gain promotion this year that will provide us with our biggest challenge as we will want to keep our squad and try to add to it as and where the coaches see fit. As our community presence grows we have an ambitious plan that our Head Coach Tim Robinson is heading up. We are setting up a Rugby Academy in conjunction with North Lindsey College. This will allow young players to study for level three courses (A levels etc.) and to go on and do a degree course and be based in Scunthorpe. We often lose talented players who go away to University and never come back. This way we can offer students a seamless transition through to University and still maintain their ties with Scunthorpe Rugby Club. Like all initiatives this has a cost to it and we are actively seeking some local or national sponsorship. The academy would have the name of the Company on all kit etc. and it would called the ACME Academy, for instance, and would get some prominent exposure within the town and further afield. So any prospective sponsors are most welcome.”

One can think of sports vision as having both “hardware” and “software” components. Both need to be fully functioning for optimal sporting performance. Regular eye examinations are therefore particularly important for elite athletes, as well as for those hoping to attain elite status. For those under 19 and still in full time education, free NHS Sight Tests are available. At Donner Optometrists, we have fitted many young rugby players with contact lenses. Daily disposables work well for those who are happy to wear their glasses at other times. For some, eye problems can be sorted out with simple eye exercises. We like to look at the software issues in context, which means when practising the sport. David Donner has worked with coaches locally to help players improve their accuracy and decision making. This means using their vision more effectively, and more like experts. For example, one of the reasons tackles are missed is that the tackler is still looking at the ball carrier’s face, or the ball, and doesn’t switch the focus to the area where contact needs to be made (usually the thighs) until it’s too late. David Armstrong, Club Chairman

As well as being Chairman, David Armstrong has seen his son progress through the Mini and Junior sections of the club. He recently took the time to speak with Rugby Club Magazine, saying, “I’ve been involved for 11 years since my son started playing as a six-year old. I started coaching when he was seven and I’m still involved now with the U18s.” “The most rewarding thing is looking out on a Sunday to see hundreds of kids enjoying playing rugby and the social environment that creates amongst parents, coaches and the community. The most challenging is trying to get lazy 18 year olds out of bed on a Sunday morning for games! But it is also challenging to juggle my roles as Chairman of the club and CEO of Wasps during very busy seasons for both clubs. “The mood here is very positive at present - it’s our 50-year anniversary and we’re looking forward to various events to celebrate that. Our First XV wants to secure a place firmly in the top half of its league and we want to keep bringing more and more Minis and Juniors to our club. Youth development is very important to us - it is the heart of everything we do. “We have a healthy range of club sponsors who are very supportive of the club and we continue to look for more partners all the time. Over the next year or two we face some tricky decisions about whether to relocate the club to new premises or stay in our existing facilities and upgrade them. The outcome of this will set our path for the next 50 years! In the coming years we would like to see our First XV win promotion and continue to grow our Mini and Junior playing base.”

However, if we focus on continual development and enjoyment the score will take care of itself.”

Playing for the Siam Cup is a highlight of many players’ careers, including Guernsey vice-captain Lewis Hillier. He explains, “The hype that comes with the Siam Cup is incredible. that plays in the Jersey Rugby Association competition. We are unique in the fact that we are a completely amateur club, but our 1st XV still manage to hold their own against the semi- professional teams they play against in their league. Semi-professionalism is a bridge we haven’t crossed yet; however, it is something we may need to consider doing as greater demands are put on players both on and off the pitch, in terms of travel, trainings, sponsorship and the general physicality of the game. We also have a Ladies rugby team that are enjoying their first season playing in RFUW National Challenge South East South 1, after being promoted last season and a growing Academy set up, which also includes girl’s rugby. We have 350 children actively involved in our Academy, supported by 40 coaches. The transition between youth and senior adult rugby is vitally important. Our Colts players undertake vigorous strength and conditioning programmes to ensure they are ready to make the step up into adult rugby. There is a close link between adult and academy players, with many opportunities for coaching and development between the two throughout the age groups. This season we have begun rebranding the club by taking on the nickname of ‘Guernsey Raiders’, a fresh logo and introducing a mascot, Rocky the Raider. Rocky features heavily on our match days and out in the community. It is our hope that we can continue to have the support of the Guernsey community and play our part in the further development of rugby in the Channel Islands.

Shooters Hill RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB

hooters Hill RFC is based at 123-125 Mayday Gardens in London and their first team currently competes in the Shepherd Neame Kent 2 League. They are led by the team of ChairS Gary Mitchell and President Ian Purcell and the club is looking to progress under their guidance.

This Season

So far this season it would be fair to say that their first team has not perhaps enjoyed the campaign that they would have liked. Up to now they have compiled a record of two wins and sixteen defeats from their eighteen matches which has left them near the bottom of the table with fourteen points on the board. They will now be looking to put together a good run of form in their remaining games in order to finish as high up the table as possible. This would provide them with some much needed momentum heading into the off- season.

2nd XV

Shooters Hill is not a club to focus solely upon their first team and they also have a 2nd XV running. This allows them to give twice as many players an opportunity to play the game every week and shows their commitment to playing an important role in the local community. Another benefit of having an extra side is that it allows the first team to benefit from far greater strength in depth. If they are ever left short on numbers through injury or work commitments they have the option of calling players up with a limited amount of disruption.

Little Shoots

Shooters Hill RFC run ‘Little Shoots’ which involves games and exercises involving a rugby ball for boys and girls aged from 2 – 7 years old. The session is run for one hour from 10.30am every Saturday and is run by fully qualified coaches, all of whom are ex and current players.

70 Issue 61 Shooters Hill

“Shooters Hill RFC run ‘Little Shoots’ which involves games and exercises involving a rugby ball for boys and girls aged from 2 – 7 years old.”

The emphasis is on fun and the sessions attract a large number of local children of varying age and ability, all of who enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and games devised by the coaches. These include an obstacle course, dodge the tickle monster, kicking practice, cowboys and Indians and games of tag rugby. If you are interested in bringing your child along, please phone Alex Lewis on 07931 548 073.

Mayday Gardens

The club has some fine facilities which allows them to offer the best experience possible to players and members alike. They made the move to their current home after their previous base at Footscray Road fell into disrepair in the early 1990’s. It therefore became essential to have their own ground and thanks in large to the efforts of Dennis Frampton they were able to acquire Mayday Gardens on a long lease in 1992. Since then they have made significant improvements to the pavilion and have made social membership an important part of what they do.

Club Hire

They are now able to make the Club Hall available to hire for members and the public. Fully paid up members can hire it for free and non-members would be looking at a reasonable price of between £50 and £100. The hall contains a fully licensed bar and has a capacity of 150 people. It can be used for a variety of events including Birthday Parties, Anniversaries and Weddings and has the potential to provide the club with a valuable source of additional revenue. Although Shooters Hill RFC has not enjoyed the season that they would have liked so far this time around this should not take away from the good work being done at the club. Rugby Club Magazine wishes them the best of luck for the future.

impossible for the chasing clubs to catch them. A trophy would be a just reward for all of the hard work that has gone into making the club a success both on and off the field. One of the highlights of the team’s performances has been the attacking brand of rugby that they have been able to produce. This has been reflected by the fact that they have racked up 856 points already at a rate of more than 35 a game, making them the top scorers in the league. This will certainly have meant that any supporters attending their matches will have been well entertained and should encourage more of the local community to get behind the side in future. This in turn has the potential to provide them with a valuable source of additional revenue which is particularly important in the current financial climate. A league title would be a fine way for the club to celebrate its 50th anniversary and their first teams form is just one example of the good work going on at Bude RFC. Hopefully they will be able to continue in the same manner for many years to come.

seeing a 2nd full-pitch installed on the Memorial Fields, funded by the Wharton Trust Rugby Charity. This proved essential, as for the first time in 30 years the 3rd XV fulfilled a full season of fixtures, finishing 6th in the Lincolnshire Merit League. This remarkable on-field season was also supplemented with Hykeham players Adam McWoo, Andy Rush, Danny Brown, Mark Munton and Karl Ward being selected for the Lincolnshire Senior XV which went undefeated in lifting the Domestic Unions Cup. To give this success some context, the club’s turbulent journey must be understood though. The club’s history is one of continual peaks and troughs. But in 2009 there was a deep trough, players were haemorrhaged to the surrounding ‘bigger’ clubs with promise of ‘better rugby’ and the club were forced to withdraw from the RFU leagues. So, considering that just 4 seasons previous to 2014/15 the Club was on the brink of extinction, this success shows how rapid progress in Grassroots Rugby can be, but only with exceptional hard work and passion from key people. In those dark days the Club was kept alive by the efforts of Club stalwart Ken Beaumont and his family, alongside his brother and then Captain Steve, in ensuring a fledgling group of Juniors turned to Seniors, at the critical point to maintain a 1st XV, which then played in the
