Purley John Fisher Club Handbook Purley John Fisher Rugby Football Club Club Handbook Season 2013/14 Purley John Fisher Rugby Football Club Established in 1997, Purley John Fisher RFC has become one of the most successful rugby clubs in the local area. The club presently has three senior teams, U18’s & U21’s Academy teams and a vets team. The club is predominately comprised of players from the local area, combined and supported by the club’s youth development efforts in conjunction with The John Fisher School in Purley, Riddlesdown Collegiate, Oasis Academy and Coulsdon College. As well as playing friendly games against teams from the local area throughout the thirty week season, the club also participates in a number of different competitions throughout the season at all team levels. English Clubs Championship — London Division 3 South West Surrey County Cup Competition Intermediate Cup Competition Surrey County Merit league competition Evergreen Cup Vets Competition Cronk / Cunis National Under 21’s Festival Surrey Under 21’s Cup Competition Training takes place every Tuesday and Thursday at the club at 7:30 pm Office Furniture Dilapidations Fit Out Refurbishment Commercial Interiors 01883 342424 [email protected] Wishes the club all the best for the forthcoming season. Chairman’s Greetings My thanks for electing me as Club Godfather for a fifth season, a role I’m happy to accept. May I wish all members and visitors a very warm welcome to the club. It is always a pleasure to welcome you all, particularly to the league day pre-match luncheons which are great value, and I urge everyone to join. The club finished last season with a feeling of well-being. The 1stXV finished 3rd in a tough league providing some great wins and only just missed out on promotion. The Marlins grew from strength to strength with the addition of new young players brought through by the clubs player development efforts. The Academy which is only in its 3rd season delivered some great wins and some much deserved silverware for the club. The vets also brought home a trophy from their final outing in the Cobham vets tournament and even made it into the British & Irish Lions official song music video led by captain Bilchy. Last season provided a window through which we could all see the pool of rich talent we have in our current senior players and the exciting potential of our younger developing players. With this available to us, and with the new players that have joined us this season the future of our club is in good hands. As ever, a club relies upon it’s “behind the scenes support”; and in this respect I thank the committee and extended network of helpers for their support and work during the season. The success and feeling of well-being is a testament to the dedication of everyone involved in running the club and who give so much time to the cause. This season the club welcomes Pat Liddiard as our new invited Club President. Pat or Mr Liddiard as most of us still address him, is a former pupil and master at The John Fisher School. As a master for many years, Pat took on various roles in the school including 1stXV Coach and Head Master until his retirement in 2009. Pat is still highly influential and active within the school and was integral in developing the high calibre of rugby enjoyed by the school to this day. Pat played for Richmond RFC and was a keen athlete holding most of the school’s athletic track and field records for the best part of 20 years. Chairman’s Greetings The last time Pat and I worked together, I was still wearing a school blazer and Pat was my 1stXV rugby coach and class master at the school, so this is a partnership I look forward to. I could not welcome a new Club President without offering a huge vote of thanks and my personal gratitude to David Hastings who has stepped down from the position of President this season. David’s dedication to the club since the club formed has been astronomical with his Presidency covering 10 years. I know everyone in the club will agree with me and would join me in saying thank you. David has also kindly agreed to continue and support Pat in the role of President. I’d also like to thank our sponsors for their much valued support again this season. Without their generous support it would be difficult for a club like ourselves to survive and therefore I’d encourage you to consider using the various services offered by our sponsors wherever & whenever you can. Please let them know you came via PJF. As I watch as many matches during the season as is possible, I am proud of the general behaviour of players, coaching staff and spectators associated with the club. We are good but not without sin, so let us lead by example and always extend the upmost respect to the referee, the linesmen and the opposition at all times. So then, please keep the bar till ringing, continue with your membership fees, attend the lunches when possible and I’ll do my best with the rest, as the club is keen on amassing a small fortune to spend on the rugby and club house. I’ll not tempt fate, just more of the same this season will do nicely. Report Executive Committee The work of the County Executive Committee in overseeing the finances and work programmes of the Kent RFU has - as with all of us - been disrupted by the season effectively concluding towards the end of March. This put paid to at least half of our programme of maintaining contact with our clubs which had been initiated with close to 50 clubs physically through our insight evenings in season 18-19. Despite this, communication we hope has continued to improve with our 70 clubs in full or associate membership in the County and we thank our Administration Manager, Tracy Pettingale, for the discipline around contributions and the presentation and content of our website which several other Counties have complimented us on and sought help to build similar sites.

  • A SHORT HISTORY the Club
MEDWAY RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB – A SHORT HISTORY The club began life in 1929 as the Rolenian Sports Club when pupils at the Kings School started playing hockey and cricket to occupy themselves during the long school holidays. They rented a pitch at Priestfields from the headmaster of Allendale Prep School at a nominal rental of £4 per annum. There they built a small pavilion which was officially opened in March 1928. It was extended in 1931 when "fixed concrete plunge baths and showers were added for the rugger." Saturday 10th October 1931 saw the club play its first match when they played and beat the King's School 10-5 at the Paddock in Rochester. Interestingly Ronald Buxton, the club captain was also the school captain at the time but there is no record of which team he played for on the day.
