Ans. At the beginning of the 19th century India was regarded as one of the few countries with least possibilities for the rise of nationalism or the growth of national movement. The main reason for such assumptions was that the vast population of India was not only politically and backward but also disunited by barriers of language, religion, culture etc. The dearth of unifying sense of nationalism and patriotic feelings was one of the cogent contributing factors to the foundation and consolidation of the British rule in India. Certain colonial scholars did not even regard India as a nation. But India, throughout the course of her history had enjoyed inherent unity in diversity. This unity in diversity greatly helped in the rise and growth of Indian National Movement. The 19th and early 20th centuries were an age of democratic, liberal and nationalist ideas. The American War of Independence, the French Revolution, the Russian Revolution of 1917 etc., greatly inspired the rise and growth of the National Movement in India. No doubt all these external events, internal turmoils and self-realisation together inspired the rise and growth of the Indian National Movement. India’s National Movement was truly Indian in the respect that it was world’s first struggle for freedom based on truth and non-violence and its foundations was laid by the socio-religious reform movement of the 19th century. Causes Among the many causes responsible for the rise of the national movement the following deserve special mention: 1. The Macaulavian system of education though conceived in the interests of efficient administration opened to the newly educated Indians the foodgates of liberal European thought The liberal and radical thoughts of European writers inspired the Indian intelligentsia with the ideals of liberty, nationality and self-government. The spread and expansion of the English language gave to the Indians living in different linguistic regions a common language-lingua franca. 2. In the nineteenth century the development of vernacular languages was also phenomenal. The neo-educated class conveyed their ideas of liberty and equality to the masses through the media of these vernaculars. The vernacular literature greatly helped in arousing Indian nationalism. 3. Socially, British Imperialism destroyed the old, order of society in India. After the Rebellion of 1857 and the British administrators realised that the reactionary and feudal elements of society could serve as strong props of Imperialism. This change in policy exposed the hollowness of British professions and drove the English Administrators and the progressive elements in opposite camps. 4. The development of the various socio-religious movements prepared the ground for the growth of national movements and watered the plant of patriotism. The reform movements sought an all- round improvement of the Indian society. They gave the people a sense of pride in Indian culture and heritage and taught them the gospel of patriotism. The economic policy pursued by the British in India had resulted in a lopsided development of Indian economy and impoverishment of the people. The economy of India was geared to the production of raw materials needed for the developing machine industry of England. Such a policy also made India as a growing market for English manufactured goods. The cumulative effect of British economic policies had resulted in chrominisery and found expression in mass unrest. Periodical famines became a regular feature of Indian economy. 6. The natural process of conquest and consolidation brought the whole of India under a sing1e political set-up. A network of roads and railways linked the bigger towns and the country with the world market. The setting up of an efficient posts and telegraphs system and the accompanying developments gave India the appearance of unity and fostered the spirit of one-mindedness. 7. The growth of the modern press and with it the public opinion was an offshoot of the English rule in India. Despite the numerous restrictions imposed on the press from time to time, Indian journalism made rapid strides. The Indian press created a strong public opinion opposed to imperialist policies, and played no insignificant role in fostering patriotism and developing nationalism. 8. The short-sighted acts and policies of Lord Lytton acted like catalytic agents. The maximum age limit for the I.C.S. examination was reduced from 21 years to 19 years, thus making it impossible for Indians to compete for it. Lytton put o the statute book two obnoxious measures the Vernacular Press Act and Indian Arms Act (1878). Lytton’s unpopular acts provoked a great storm of opposition in the country and led to the organisation of various political associations for carrying on anti- Government propaganda in the country. 9. One unfortunate legacy of the Rebellion of 1857 was the feeling of racial bitterness between the rulers and the ruled. The Anglo-Indian bureaucracy developed an attitude of arrogance and contempt towards the Indians. The Indians were dubbed as belonging to an inferior race and no longer worthy of any trust. This narrow approach evoked a reaction in the Indian mind and put the educated Indians on the defensive. 10. ILLBERT BILL (1883 CONTROVERSY) In 1880, there was a change of Government in England, and the Liberal Party under Gladstone came into power. He was known for his liberal ideas and was a believer in moral principles. “Good Government” he pronounced, “was no substitute for self-government”, “It is our weakness and calamity”, he said that we have not been able to give India the blessing of free institutions”. He sent Lord Ripen, a close friend and follower, to “reform the structure of the Indian Government. The new Governor-GeneraI repealed the Vernacular Press Act of 1878, commenced industrial legislation by passing the first Factories Act, and took steps to promote local self-government in big cities and towns. Ripon also sought to remove the individual distinction existing at that time between the European and Indian members of the judiciary. Indian sessions judges and magistrates were not re-empowered to try European offenders, and this was a cause of great annoyance to the educated community of the country. In 1883, the Law Member of the Viceroy’s Executive Council, Sir Courtenay Illbert, introduced in the Imperial Legislature a Bill, known after his name as Illbert Bill, designed to remove ‘The disability of Indian judges. The Anglo-Indian community opposed the enactment of the Bill vehemently, and asserted that the Indian judges were not fit to administer justice to a White offender. The European Defence Association, with branches in important cities of India, was formed to organize a campaign against the Bill. There were protest meetings and agitation, and it was proposed to kidnap Ripon and hold him to ransom. This manifestation of the British sense of racial superiority acted as a spark to the power magazine; it acted as an eye-opener to Indians. They learnt the lesson that they would have to undergo a long period of sacrifice and discipline if they wanted justice and equality in their own country. The educated class of people noted the extra-ordinary force of a minority when organized and directed by a single aim, and they applied the inference to their own situation. Demands began to arise for a national organization by means of which the grievances of the people against the British rule could be ventilated.

Rather, the 11th-century temples are part of a larger visuality that extends to contemporary civic monuments in the city center, Rick suggested in the first class that I took with him. I learnt to move across time and space. To understand modern Vrindavan, one would have to look at its Mughal past; to understand temple architecture, one would have to look for rebellions in the colonial archive. Catherine B. Asher gave me the gift of the Mughal world – a world that I only barely knew before I met her. Today, I speak of the Islamicate world of colonial Vrindavan. Cathy walked me through Mughal mosques, tombs, and gardens on many cold wintry days in Minneapolis and on a hot summer day in Sasaram, Bihar. The Islamicate Krishna in my dissertation thus came into being.

Email: [email protected] Abstract Two Tagores, two visionaries; one as a poet-educationist, another as a revolutionary-politician, both from colonial India, then reeling under the British yoke, visited Russia at about the same time. While the elder Tagore, Nobel-laureate Rabindranath, was moved by the huge scale of development, mainly on the educational front, -- the younger and the more rebellious one, Soumyendranath, studied deeply, paused, and raised questions, debated and disputed the gap between the so-called socialist theory and practice in Soviet Russia. Rabindranath wanted to visit post-revolution Russia for quite some time. After a few futile attempts his desire was ultimately fulfilled in 1930. What he primarily wanted to see was the all-embracing spread of education in the Soviet system and its results. His Russiar Chithi, or Letters from Russia bears testimony to his impression of the new ‘awakened’ Russia. In the very first line of his first letter from Moscow he writes, “In Russia at last! Whichever way I look, I am filled with wonder.” In spite of a few adverse comments that he made later on, this feeling of ‘wonder’ about Russia lasted throughout the collection.

    4 PROTECTING HOLY COWS Hindu vigilantism against Muslims in India Juhi Ahuja Introduction On 28 September 2015, a Muslim man named Mohammed Akhlaq and his son Danish were brutally attacked by a Hindu mob in their home in Dadri, Uttar Pradesh, India. The mob, which beat up both father and son with sticks and bricks, accused them of storing and consuming beef. As they had no way of proving otherwise, the violent episode resulted in the unfortunate death of Akhlaq. Danish was seriously injured. Despite the family’s pleas that the meat in question was actually goat meat, not beef, the police sent samples to a laboratory for testing. It indeed turned out that the meat was mutton, not beef. Several individuals were arrested for the crime, to which local villagers protested. At least two of the arres- ted were affiliated to the local village temple, and at least one was linked to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) (Huffpost 2017). The aftermath of the incident was deeply politicized in a climate already fraught with inter-communal tensions and politics. Media coverage of the attack was widespread and stoked religious sentiments. National and local political parties were quick to capitalize on the attack as politicians visited the home of Akhlaq’s family – all of which was reported on and even televised. Despite the arrests made, little was done to allay the fears of Muslims who form India’s largest religious minority group. Given the local authorities’ delayed treatment of the attack (police were rather slow to respond) and determination to verify the type of meat, it seems almost as if should the meat indeed have been beef, the crime committed against Akhlaq and Danish may not have been treated by the state as too severe or repre- hensible.

INDIAN TRAVEL NARRATIVES: NEW PERSPECTIVES Himadri Lahiri Netaji Subhas Open University [email protected] Received: 30-01-2021 Accepted: 02-02-2021 The study of travel narratives as a genre has received a boost with the emergence of new disciplines like Cultural Studies, Women’s Studies and Postcolonial Studies. These cross-disciplinary fields trace in travel accounts not only a picture of contemporary society but also micro-narratives of agency and reverse gaze. While well-known travelogues written during the colonial period by men and women from the West usually project the imperial eyes, those of travellers from the East to the West reveal worldviews altogether different. The gaze of women looking at unfamiliar spaces obviously follows variant trajectories. The travel narratives of racially or ethnically marginalized individuals have more complex patterns. A diachronic study of travelogues would reveal distinct changes in material conditions of travel and attitudes of travellers. Advent of modernity, growing secularization of the travel as a process and consumerisation of the tourist sector have made travelling more comfortable but at the same time have robbed it of the old, pristine charms. The book under review displays some of these trends. Indian Travel Narratives: New Perspectives offers multiple perspectives by covering accounts of varied travel experiences of the eighteenth, nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Set in both India and abroad, the travelogues in this volume speak of the unique experiences of men and women.

    Chapter III Region in Context: Mithila, its People and its Art 3.1 Introduction In the previous chapter, we critically examined the debates around art, particularly „folk‟ art, to delineate a discursive history of categories that unravel the politics of nomenclature. We also examined those discourses in the context of Mithila art, by surveying the literature from the earliest writings to the most recent ones. In this chapter, we shall present an understanding of the region of Mithila in the historical context. We shall also delineate the history of Mithila art, from the earliest times when it was done on walls and floors to its commoditized form. The objective of this chapter is to provide a background of the region- how structures and relations of society, economy, polity and culture have worked together to construct this region, which provides a context in which the painting tradition emerged. 3.2 Political History of Mithila Though Mithila shares some features with the „Hindi belt‟, owing to being part of the state of Bihar which comprises the other two regions of Bhojpur and Magadh on the one hand, and those of „eastern India‟, owing to the similarities with Bengal on the other, it developed its own unique features over time, leading to the development of a distinct social formation and cultural identity. The history of Mithila is mired in myth; infact, it is difficult to separate the two. Claude Levi-Strauss, among others, has argued for the understanding of history as another type of myth, for studying history not as separate from but as a continuation of mythology1.

Juli 2015 Abstract Among the eldest of its kind in Asia, the Communist Party of India (CPI) pioneered the spread of Marxist politics beyond the European arena. Influenced by both Soviet revolutionary practice and radical nationalism in British India, it operated under conditions not provided for in Marxist theory—foremost the prominence of religion and community in social and political life. The thesis analyzes, first, the theoretical and organizational ‘overhead’ of the CPI in terms of the position of religion in a party communist hierarchy of emancipation. It will therefore question the works of Marx, Engels, and Lenin on the one hand, and Comintern doctrines on the other. Secondly, it scrutinizes the approaches and strategies of the CPI and individual members, often biographically biased, to come to grips with the subcontinental environment under the primacy of mass politics. Thirdly, I discuss communist vistas on revolution on concrete instances including (but not limited to) the Gandhian non-cooperation movement, the Moplah rebellion, the subcontinental proletariat, the problem of communalism, and assertion of minority identities. I argue that the CPI established a pattern of vacillation between qualified rejection and conditional appropriation of religion that loosely constituted two diverging revolutionary paradigms characterizing communist practice from the Soviet outset: Western and Eastern.

It focuses on the widespread practice of eating homemade lunches in the workplace, important for commuters to replenish mind and body with foods that embody their specific family backgrounds, in a society where religious, caste, class, and community markers comprise complex dietary regimes. Eating such charged substances in the office canteen was essential in reproducing selfhood and social distinction within Mumbai’s cosmopolitan environment.

    Indian Journal of History of Science, 47.2 (2012) 297-303 PROJECT REPORTS CALCUTTAN SCIENCE 1784-1930 AND THE AWAKENING IN INDIA* Arun Kumar Biswas** Several reputed scholars, who have written on the so-called ‘Bengal Renaissance’ of the nineteenth century, have neglected the science component and the related contributions in this movement. A much enlarged concept of Science including the natural/material, spiritual as well as the social varieties with ‘scientific’ methodologies has been adopted in their survey. Many non-Bengalees and even non-Indians have actively contributed to ‘Bengal Renaissance’, staying in and around Calcutta, whereas the majority amongst the Bengali-speaking population abstained from the reformist, nationalist and syncretist movement. This majority pursued a separatist ideology for more than a century and eventually seceded from the rest of India in 1947. This gives the genesis for an alternative title, as it is provided here. Undoubtedly, the ‘mini-Renaissance’ of the period 1784-1930 around Calcutta/ Kolkata was truncated, incomplete and much smaller in magnitude than the European Renaissance. Yet, the superlative, universal and syncretistic contributions of William Jones, Rammohun Roy, Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda, Rabindranath Tagore, Kazi Nazrul Islam, Jagadis Chandra Bose, C.V. Raman, Sister Nivedita etc. (all Calcuttans) were such that these were not even dreamt of in the European Renaissance. This syncretistic tradition and spirit has suffered a temporary decline since the 1930’s but is bound to be resurrected in the not-too-distant future.
