• The Fall of the Dubrovnik Republic and the Establishment of the French Administration in Dubrovnik in 1808 and 1809
55 Original Paper UDC 949.713-2Dubrovnik "18" THE FALL OF THE DUBROVNIK REPUBLIC AND THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE FRENCH ADMINISTRATION IN DUBROVNIK IN 1808 AND 1809 STJEPAN ĆOSIĆ ABSTRACT: This paper is concerned with the state of social and political affairs in Dubrovnik prior to the abolishment of the Republic. It further illus trates the first phase of the organization and exertion of the new French ad ministration in 1808 and 1809. In order to provide a more complete and objective insight into the signifi cance of the French abolishment of the Republic of Dubrovnik (Ragusa) as well as to grasp the social, political and administrative changes which fol lowed, it is necessary to elucidate Dubrovnik at that time in its broader so cial, economic, and political context.1 Stjepan Ćosić, member of the Institute for Historical Sciences of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Dubrovnik. Address: Zavod za povijesne znanosti HAZU, Lapadska obala 6, 20000 Dubrovnik, Croatia. A longer version of this article has already been published in Croatian under the following title: »O slomu Republike i ustroju francuske uprave u Dubrovniku 1808. i 1809.« Anali Zavoda za povijesne znanosti HAZU u Dubrovniku 33 (1995): pp. 177-203. 56 Dubrovnik Annals 2 (1998) Social and historical background preceding the fall of the Republic The turn of the eighteenth century witnessed some radical social changes throughout the European continent. The ideas of the French revolution, post- revolutionary events, and the Napoleonic campaigns enforced a considerable incursion upon the European political layout, thus introducing the concept of liberty with a profoundly new ideological meaning.

It discusses the consequences of the fall of the old aristocratic regime and a series of administrative and social reforms initiated by the French. The Dubrovnik society vigorously opposed the new government policy, partly based bourgeois values. Far-reaching re- forms were hindered by the campaigns that prevailed throughout the short- term French rule. Particular attention is being drawn to the events taking place in the course of the 1813/1814 uprising against the French, the circumstances which led to the Habsburg annexation of Dubrovnik after the fall of Napo- leon. Within a year and a half of its establishment in 1808, the French admin- istration managed to construct a new and long-term organizational framework in Dubrovnik. Napoleon’s war campaigns and victories in central Europe led to closer relations between Dubrovnik and the French Empire. • Ragusa Intelligence & Security (RIS)
Ragusa Intelligence & Security (RIS) - A Model for the 21st Century!? Stevan Dedijer Dubrovnik, Croatia ABSTRACT Ragusa (Dubrovnik), a city-state on the eastern Adriatic coast has organ- ized one of the first intelligence organizations in history. Having no army Ragusa's indipendence depended heavily on accurate and timely intelli- gence gathered by its merchant, diplomats and scientists. Througout its history as a indipendent city-state (from 14th to 19th century) Ragusa main- tained its neutral position and ballanced between Austria, Venice, Otoman Empire and other European powers having good diplomatic and trade relations with all of them. The author's own research of the Dubrovnik's archive show that good intelligence was critical for such a policy enabling Ragusa's diplomats quick adapting to the new situations and helping them "guessing right", and that is exactly what intelligence is. A Surprising Discovery In l972, while questioning why Communist politicians – Tito in particular - failed to develop their countries to full potential, I con- cluded that they failed because they suffered an “information defi- ciency.” Governments need information to survive; that is, the gathering, classification, and analysis of data. Governments now operate in the tenth Intelligence Revolution, one induced by the democratic capitalist system. Former CIA director, William Colby, set out the revolution’s components: . National and International (i.e. NATO) Intelligence and Security (I&S) communities. Oversight and control bodies. Science-based technologies. Privatization of Intelligence; that is, corporations base their RISS according to IBM 127 NATIONAL SECURITY AND THE FUTURE 3-4(1) 2000, pp. 127-141 . Future I&S function: population self-management To which can be added: .

• Marin Getaldić – a Look on a New Era. on Occasion of the 450Th Anniversary of His Birth”
Croatian Studies Review 14-15 (2018/2019) Marijana Borić: “Marin Getaldić – A look on a new era. On occasion of the 450th anniversary of his birth” Marijana Borić Department for History of Sciences Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Zagreb [email protected] Abstract Among the numerous Croatian humanists who left a mark in the development of Western European science and culture, Dubrovnik nobleman Marin Getaldić (1568-1666) is the greatest Croatian mathematician and physicist of the 16th and 17th centuries. Although he was educated in the hometown for performing of administrative jobs in the service of the Republic of Ragusa, in a very specific way, he became involved in scientific research and his ideas were accepted by the most prominent scientific circles and names of contemporary Europe, such as Galileo Galilei, François Viète etc. He was developing the most current area of Renaissance mathematics - the symbolic algebra. Getaldić also wrote the first complete manual of new algebraic analysis applied to diverse materials. Having achieved remarkable results, he came closer to founding of a new mathematical field - analytical geometry. Getaldić particularly focused on the development of mathematical methods and their application in the research of natural sciences. With that approach, different from the previous, traditional, and largely quantitative description of the world, he laid down the main tendencies of the modern approach to the research in natural sciences. Key words: Marin Getaldić, the beginnings of modern science, experimental approach, mathematical methods, Galileo Galilei, François Viète, algebraic analysis, symbolic algebra 47 Croatian Studies Review 14-15 (2018/2019) Introduction Marin Getaldić lived in the period when the influence of Renaissance philosophy gradually shaped and based modern science.
