    Conservative Parties and the Birth of Democracy How do democracies form and what makes them die? Daniel Ziblatt revisits this timely and classic question in a wide-ranging historical narrative that traces the evolution of modern political democracy in Europe from its modest beginnings in 1830s Britain to Adolf Hitler’s 1933 seizure of power in Weimar Germany. Based on rich historical and quantitative evidence, the book offers a major reinterpretation of European history and the question of how stable political democracy is achieved. The barriers to inclusive political rule, Ziblatt finds, were not inevitably overcome by unstoppable tides of socioeconomic change, a simple triumph of a growing middle class, or even by working class collective action. Instead, political democracy’s fate surprisingly hinged on how conservative political parties – the historical defenders of power, wealth, and privilege – recast themselves and coped with the rise of their own radical right. With striking modern parallels, the book has vital implications for today’s new and old democracies under siege. Daniel Ziblatt is Professor of Government at Harvard University where he is also a resident fellow of the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies. He is also currently Fernand Braudel Senior Fellow at the European University Institute. His first book, Structuring the State: The Formation of Italy and Germany and the Puzzle of Federalism (2006) received several prizes from the American Political Science Association. He has written extensively on the emergence of democracy in European political history, publishing in journals such as American Political Science Review, Journal of Economic History, and World Politics.

    \\jciprod01\productn\C\CIN\52-2\cin202.txt unknown Seq: 1 1-MAY-20 11:13 Interrogating Illiberalism Through Chinese Communist Party Regulations Samuli Sepp¨anen† Can the exercise of political leadership, which is meant to transcend laws, nevertheless, be governed by formal rules? This Article examines the relationship between the illiberal governance project and rule-based gov- ernance in the context of the Chinese Communist Party’s internal “intraparty” regulations. In the past few years, Chinese Communist Party leaders have sought to strengthen the Party’s political leadership by extending its discipline inspection mechanisms further into Chinese state organs. The Party leaders have also sought to regulate Party cadres’ uses of power more closely through intraparty regulations. The efforts to strengthen the Party’s political leadership through improving intraparty regulations point to a number of puzzling contradictions and even para- doxes in the illiberal governance project. Rules make the Party more gov- ernable and at least potentially limit space for corruption and other unsanctioned personal projects; but at the same time, they provide oppor- tunities for resisting Party leadership and divide the Party into organiza- tional departments with conflicting interests. This Article discusses such contradictions and paradoxes within the context of global illiberal political thought and argues that prominent solutions to the tension between illib- eral political leadership and rule-based governance mask uncertainty about what illiberal political leadership actually entails. From its entry in the Chinese market to the year of 2009, VW enjoyed popularity, high reputation, and undisputed leadership in the Chinese passenger car market, and achieved a great commercial success. Most previous accounts attribute VW’s success in China to VW’s wise business operation or Chinese government’s support. This study guided by the methods and theories of technology studies, especially the actor- network theory (ANT), takes into account technical, socioeconomic, political, or cultural factors simultaneously. By selecting one of VW’s successful joint ventures with China – Shanghai Volkswagen (SVW) – as a case to do in-depth investigation, it examines the relationship between heterogeneous actors (both humans and nonhumans) and the pathways of SVW development, and has found that all of the SVW establishment, production, marketing, and development were shaped by a range of diverse social and material actors, including the central planners, local government, VW, local suppliers, Chinese consumers, and VW cars, and depended on Chinese particular political and cultural context; VW’s success in China presents a story of co-construction of power and actor-networks.

    ON EFFECTING A NEW UPSURGE IN FILM-MAKING Concluding Speech at a Seminar on the Great Leader،¯s Thought on Art and Literature February 15, 1971 We have held a seminar on the great leader،¯s thought on art and literature with the aim of arming scenarists and artists more thoroughly with his thought and Party policy on art and literature and bringing about another great revolutionary upsurge in film-making. In closing the seminar today, I would like to speak about some current problems in making films. 1. ON CREATING A GREATER NUMBER OF REVOLUTIONARY AND MILITANT FILMS Last year our screenwriters and artists produced a number of rev?olutionary and militant films of high ideological and artistic value, such as The Flourishing Village, The Story of a Nurse and When We Pick Apples, as well as the adaptation of The Fate of a Self-defence Corps Man, an immortal classic; thus they contributed greatly to establishing me monolithic ideological system of the Party firmly among Party members and the working people and to transforming the whole society into revolutionaries and assimilating them to the working class. The art of film in our country is now an authentic visual textbook for the people, who are struggling to overthrow imperialism and the system of exploitation and bring victory to the cause of socialism and communism. It is also a beacon lighting up the road for revolu?tionary art and literature of the working class to follow. This success in film art is a great victory of the leader،¯s Juche idea on art and literature and a clear demonstration of the validity and .everlasting vitality of our Party،¯s policy on art and literature Scenarists and artists should not rest on their laurels; they should, in the future, continue to produce many revolutionary and militant films which are conducive to the establishment of the monolithic ideological system of the Party among Party members and the work?ing people and to the transformation of the whole society into revo?lutionaries and their assimilation to the working class.

    MeierMovies Short Films by Star Rating Theatrically released motion pictures of 40 minutes or less For every great feature, there’s a great short, and this list attempts to chronicle just some of those tiny masterpieces – and their not-so-masterful counterparts. For films to make this list, they must have played in at least one film festival or showcase, or theatrical venue, for a paying audience. Films shown only on television (or available only on DVD, Blu-ray, video or online) are reserved for my Television list. Also not included here are student films and similar projects that have never been presented at a theatrical venue that charged admission to viewers. (Please note that this is slightly more lenient than the qualifications for the feature- film lists, which require that a film of more than 40 minutes play at least two major festivals, or have a limited or general release.) Theatrical newsreels (pre-television) and theatrically released trailers are not eligible for this list, although mini-documentaries and travelogues (typically playing alongside trailers and B-features in the 1930-1950s) are. Short films shown at theme parks and museums are eligible, but not if they rely on animatronic/interactive/live elements. Shorts produced for timed competitions, such as 48-hour or 24-hour projects, are not included here, unless those films were subsequently screened at a second venue. The ratings system is the same as that of the feature-film list, just with no half or quarter stars. That difference is due to simplification and also to the fact that it’s admittedly difficult, and perhaps somewhat unfair, to compare a 2-minute film to a 40- minute one using quarter stars.

Singing can be heard from the kids inside. Pan up to reveal “Frighton Elementary” on the side of the bus. KIDS (singing) The neck bone’s connected to the: head bone. The head bone’s connected to the: horn bone. The horn bone’s right above the...wing bones. (laughing) The bus pulls into a parking lot. The bus doors open and a THIRD GRADE CLASS OF MONSTER KIDS pour through, pushing and yelling and laughing and being generally chaotic. KID #1 RAHR! KID #2 Ahh! KID #1 I scared you! KID #2 (laughing) No you didn't! MRS. GRAVES Okay, remember our field trip rules everyone: No pushing, no biting, and no fire-breathing. One of the kids breathes fire on one of his friends.
