Speech at a Ceremony Marking the Centenary of the Communist Party of China July 1, 2021
Speech at a Ceremony Marking the Centenary of the Communist Party of China July 1, 2021 Xi Jinping Comrades and friends, Today, the first of July, is a great and solemn day in the history of both the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Chinese nation. We gather here to join all Party members and Chinese people of all ethnic groups around the country in celebrating the centenary of the Party, looking back on the glorious journey the Party has traveled over 100 years of struggle, and looking ahead to the bright prospects for the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. To begin, let me extend warm congratulations to all Party members on behalf of the CPC Central Committee. On this special occasion, it is my honor to declare on behalf of the Party and the people that through the continued efforts of the whole Party and the entire nation, we have realized the first centenary goal of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects. This means that we have brought about a historic resolution to the problem of absolute poverty in China, and we are now marching in confident strides toward the second centenary goal of building China into a great modern socialist country in all respects. This is a great and glorious accomplishment for the Chinese nation, for the Chinese people, and for the Communist Party of China! Comrades and friends, The Chinese nation is a great nation. With a history of more than 5,000 years, China has made indelible contributions to the progress of human civilization. -
Conservative Parties and the Birth of Democracy
Conservative Parties and the Birth of Democracy How do democracies form and what makes them die? Daniel Ziblatt revisits this timely and classic question in a wide-ranging historical narrative that traces the evolution of modern political democracy in Europe from its modest beginnings in 1830s Britain to Adolf Hitler’s 1933 seizure of power in Weimar Germany. Based on rich historical and quantitative evidence, the book offers a major reinterpretation of European history and the question of how stable political democracy is achieved. The barriers to inclusive political rule, Ziblatt finds, were not inevitably overcome by unstoppable tides of socioeconomic change, a simple triumph of a growing middle class, or even by working class collective action. Instead, political democracy’s fate surprisingly hinged on how conservative political parties – the historical defenders of power, wealth, and privilege – recast themselves and coped with the rise of their own radical right. With striking modern parallels, the book has vital implications for today’s new and old democracies under siege. Daniel Ziblatt is Professor of Government at Harvard University where he is also a resident fellow of the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies. He is also currently Fernand Braudel Senior Fellow at the European University Institute. His first book, Structuring the State: The Formation of Italy and Germany and the Puzzle of Federalism (2006) received several prizes from the American Political Science Association. He has written extensively on the emergence of democracy in European political history, publishing in journals such as American Political Science Review, Journal of Economic History, and World Politics. -

Interrogating Illiberalism Through Chinese Communist Party Regulations Samuli Sepp¨Anen†
\\jciprod01\productn\C\CIN\52-2\cin202.txt unknown Seq: 1 1-MAY-20 11:13 Interrogating Illiberalism Through Chinese Communist Party Regulations Samuli Sepp¨anen† Can the exercise of political leadership, which is meant to transcend laws, nevertheless, be governed by formal rules? This Article examines the relationship between the illiberal governance project and rule-based gov- ernance in the context of the Chinese Communist Party’s internal “intraparty” regulations. In the past few years, Chinese Communist Party leaders have sought to strengthen the Party’s political leadership by extending its discipline inspection mechanisms further into Chinese state organs. The Party leaders have also sought to regulate Party cadres’ uses of power more closely through intraparty regulations. The efforts to strengthen the Party’s political leadership through improving intraparty regulations point to a number of puzzling contradictions and even para- doxes in the illiberal governance project. Rules make the Party more gov- ernable and at least potentially limit space for corruption and other unsanctioned personal projects; but at the same time, they provide oppor- tunities for resisting Party leadership and divide the Party into organiza- tional departments with conflicting interests. This Article discusses such contradictions and paradoxes within the context of global illiberal political thought and argues that prominent solutions to the tension between illib- eral political leadership and rule-based governance mask uncertainty about what illiberal political leadership actually entails. Volkswagen Cars, Politics, and Culture in the Post-1978 China: the Social Construction of Success
Volkswagen Cars, Politics, and Culture in the Post-1978 China: The Social Construction of Success Xiaolan Qiu Dissertation submitted to the faculty of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy In Science and Technology Studies Timothy W. Luke (Chair) Daniel Breslau Ellsworth Fuhrman Saul Halfon February 13, 2012 Blacksburg, Virginia Keywords: Volkswagen, Shanghai-Volkswagen, technology policy, sociology of technology, China Volkswagen Cars, Politics, and Culture in the Post-1978 China: The Social Construction of Success Xiaolan Qiu ABSTRACT Volkswagen (VW) is one of the first foreign carmakers that made direct investments in China after 1978. From its entry in the Chinese market to the year of 2009, VW enjoyed popularity, high reputation, and undisputed leadership in the Chinese passenger car market, and achieved a great commercial success. Most previous accounts attribute VW’s success in China to VW’s wise business operation or Chinese government’s support. This study guided by the methods and theories of technology studies, especially the actor- network theory (ANT), takes into account technical, socioeconomic, political, or cultural factors simultaneously. By selecting one of VW’s successful joint ventures with China – Shanghai Volkswagen (SVW) – as a case to do in-depth investigation, it examines the relationship between heterogeneous actors (both humans and nonhumans) and the pathways of SVW development, and has found that all of the SVW establishment, production, marketing, and development were shaped by a range of diverse social and material actors, including the central planners, local government, VW, local suppliers, Chinese consumers, and VW cars, and depended on Chinese particular political and cultural context; VW’s success in China presents a story of co-construction of power and actor-networks. -

Pixar OnwardReview
Pixar Onward Review By: Michelle Cisneros The latest animated film Onward joins the rest of Pixar’s high ranking and tear-jerking productions. The movie is set in a fictional world whose past was filled with magic and spells, but is now dependent on the convenience of modern technology. The movie focuses on two blue-skinned elf brothers and their quest to get to spend one more day with their deceased father. Ian Lightfoot (played by rising star Tom Holland) is the youngest brother, a shy and timid teen who often compares himself to his late father who had confidence, which Ian lacks. Though never having met his father, we see that he plays an important role in Ian’s life: often wearing his father’s old clothing, has photos of him all over his bedroom, and listens to old cassettes of his voice. Ian’s older brother Barley (voiced by Guardian of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt) is the complete opposite, he is fearless and is often judged by the people around him for trying to bring magic back. On Ian’s 16th birthday, he receives a very special gift from his dad. To Ian and his mother’s confusion (and Barley’s amazement), it is a wooden staff with a magical spell that will allow him to conjure him back till next sundown. After hours of attempting, Ian is able to get only the bottom half of their dad back, from the waistband down. Both brothers agree to go off on a quest in hopes of finding another magic stone in order to get the other half of their dad.
