The saints are the real, determined majority who give direction to our lives. We stick to them! They translate the divine into human form, the eternal into concrete time.” In a changing world, not only do the saints not remain outside it historically or culturally but they are becoming ever more credible subjects of it.

  • Blessed Giuseppina Nicoli, D.C
Blessed Giuseppina Nicoli, D.C. Servant of Jesus Christ in the person of children living in poverty Giuseppina (Josephine) was born to a large and deeply religious family in Casatisma (Province of Pavia, in the northwest Italian region of Lombardy), Italy. She was the fifth of ten children. Her father was a lawyer. She spent her childhood in the nearby town of Voghera, completed her studies with honors and earned a master teacher's diploma. Strong-willed, stubborn and, at the same time, softened by a deep religious sense, she decided to devote her life to the Church. Soon she left her family to enter the Company of the Daughters of Charity: Christ had seduced her and fascinated her. On September 24, 1883, Giuseppina entered as a novice at the House of San Salvario in Turin (Central House of the Turin Province of the Daughters of Charity). Sr. Giuseppina arrived in Cagliari, Sardinia on January 1, 1885; she was just 21 years old. She joined her new mission with enthusiasm. She was sent to teach young women at the Istituto Provvidenza (Institute of Providence), but her ministry would not be limited to teaching. The Institute of Providence was founded by Father Gian Battista Vassallo, S.J., to accommodate poor orphan girls, educating them in the Christian way and teaching them the skills necessary to become good mothers. Later they added a factory for weaving cotton, flax and silk and the boarders were trained in these trades. Blessed Sister Giuseppina Nicoli taught here from 1885 to 1889. Over time it remained a girls' boarding school until its closure at the end of the 1990s.

On this the Feast of Saint Justin De Jacobis, a missionary par excellence, I announce to the worldwide Congregation the five projects that were granted the Mission Award for 2007. There is a brief discription of the history of each of the projects, as well as the goals and objectives proposed to make them realizable. I wish to encourage the Visitors to continue to promote not only the Mission Award, granted on 30 July every year, but also the Systemic Change Award, granted each 25 January on the Feast of the Foundation of the Congregation of the Mission. As I try to make clear each time these awards are announced, the overall objective is to stimulate among the provinces and individual confreres or teams of confreres creativity, which, when motivated by love, is infinite. This year only 11 projects were presented, perhaps because the date was advanced for presenting these projects, due to the fact that we were holding the Visitors’ Meeting in June, which is when we usually have our tempo forte meeting to select the winners. I encourage the Visitors to animate the members of their provinces to participate actively in these efforts to help improve our quality of evangelization for the Poor in our world today.

Giubilei e Anni Santi. Storia, significato et devozioni Published by Edizioni San Paolo, Turin, Italy, 1999 (293 pages) This collaborative work, edited by Luigi Mezzadri, is the first complete, concise history in a scientific style on the 24 jubilees of the Church, from 1300 to 1975. For each jubilee there is an indication of how it came to be, which pope proclaimed it, how and when it was celebrated, how many faithful participated, what were the most important facts and personalities who characterized it. Moreover, there is a description of the most significant rites and ceremonies, the usages which characterized each year, the devotions required of the pilgrims in order to gain the indulgence, and the principal holy places. The authors make use of numerous citations taken from contemporary sources. Each jubilee is inserted in an organic manner into the broader context of Church history, and the account, subdivided into seven chapters (one for each century), is developed in chronological order.
