  • Il Negazionismo. Storia Di Una Menzogna 1

  • Holocaust Denial Cases and Freedom of Expression in the United States
Holocaust Denial Cases and Freedom of Expression in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom By Charla Marie Boley Submitted to Central European University, Department of Legal Studies In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of … M.A. in Human Rights Supervisor: Professor Vladimir Petrovic Budapest, Hungary 2016 CEU eTD Collection Copyright 2016 Central European University CEU eTD Collection i EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Freedom of expression is an internationally recognized fundamental right, crucial to open societies and democracy. Therefore, when the right is utilized to proliferate hate speech targeted at especially vulnerable groups of people, societies face the uncomfortable question of how and when to limit freedom of expression. Holocaust denial, as a form of hate speech, poses such a problem. This particular form of hate speech creates specific problems unique to its “field” in that perpetrators cloak their rhetoric under a screen of academia and that initial responses typically discard it as absurd, crazy, and not worth acknowledging. The three common law jurisdictions of the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom all value free speech and expression, but depending on national legislation and jurisprudence approach the question of Holocaust denial differently. The three trials of Holocaust deniers Zundel, Irving, and the the Institute for Historical Review, a pseudo academic organization, caught the public’s attention with a significant amount of sensationalism. The manner in which the cases unfolded and their aftermath demonstrate that Holocaust denial embodies anti-Semitism and is a form of hate speech. Furthermore, examination of trial transcripts, media response, and existing scholarship, shows that combating denial in courtrooms can have the unintended consequence of further radicalizing deniers and swaying more to join their ranks.

  • Concentration Camp of Stutthof, Not Far from Jürgen Graf, Carlo Mattogno Danzig (West Prussia), Has Never Been the Subject of Scientifi C Study by Western Historians
The National Socialist concentration camp of Stutthof, not far from Jürgen Graf, Carlo Mattogno Danzig (West Prussia), has never been the subject of scientifi c study by western historians. In Poland there exists quite an extensive body Concentration Camp of literature on the subject, which must, however, be treated with caution, because it is heavily infl uenced by Soviet-Communist and Polish-nationalistic ideology. According to this literature, Stutthof became a ‘makeshift’ extermination camp within the framework of the execution of the so-called ‘Final Solution of the Jewish Question’ Stutthof in 1944. and its Function Jürgen Graf and Carlo Mattogno have subjected this view of Stutt- hof to critical examination based on Polish literature and documents in National located in Russian, Polish, and Dutch archives, paying particular attention to mass transports to and from Stutthof in 1944. This Socialist research led the authors to very defi nite conclusions as to the func- Jewish Policy tion of the camp, differing dramatically from those expressed in the standard literature: Not only do Graf and Mattogno prove that the Stutthof camp did not serve as a ‘makeshift’ extermination camp—the room claimed to have been used as a homicidal gas chamber was never anything else but a delousing chamber. This book also sheds some light on the question of what happened to prisoners who were sent to Auschwitz but were never registered in that camp: after quite an ordeal, some of them ended up in Stutthof. The present volume is a milestone of research, which no historian with any claim to seriousness can afford to ignore.

Drobnicki This bibliography is a supplement to four earlier ones published in the March 1994, December 1996, September 1998, and December 2000 issues of the Bulletin of Bibliography. During the intervening time. Holocaust revisionism has continued to be discussed both in the scholarly lit- erature and in the mainstream press, especially due to the libel lawsuit filed by David-Irving against Deborah Lipstadt and Penguin Books and his subsequent appeal of that verdict. The Holocaust deniers, who prefer to call themselves “revisionists” in an attempt to gain scholarly legitimacy, have refused to go away and remain as vocal as ever— Bradley R. Smith has con- tinued to send revisionist advertisements to college newspapers, generating publicity for his cause. Holocaust denial, which will be used interchangeably with Holocaust revisionism in this bib- liography, is a body of literature that seeks to “prove” that the Jewish Holocaust did not hap- pen. Although individual revisionists may have different motives and beliefs, they all share at least one point: that there was no systematic attempt by Nazi Germany to exterminate Euro- pean Jewry.

In the years following the war, the actions committed during the Holocaust were deemed “crimes against humanity,” and many senior members of the Nazi government were brought to justice. Despite the clear historical record, there are some people who choose to deny the Holocaust ever happened. They label themselves “revisionists,” pretending to be part of the legitimate historical practice of revisionism and claiming to be searching for the “truth.” But unlike actual revisionists who genuinely attempt to revise history, Holocaust “revisionists” merely spread false propaganda and are better known as Holocaust deniers. Holocaust deniers are dangerous because they distort information in order to create a lie—effectively inventing their own version of history.

PICHENY* Abstract: Despite documentation of the atrocities of the Holocaust, there are those who deny its occurrence. Previously, the Holocaust denial movement had been confined to the western world. Western Holocaust deniers, however, faced with opposition and legal restriction by countries such as the United States, Canada, France, and Germany, have expanded their efforts into many Arab nations, such as Egypt, Syria, and the Palestinian Authority. While Holocaust-inspired anti Semitism is nothing new in these countries, the on-going Arab-Israeli conflict provides a fertile ground for efforts to promulgate Holocaust denial as a new anti-Semitic propaganda tool. Most disturbing is that many Arab governments and political leaders not only support, but even perpetuate Holocaust denial themselves.
