3 Hollingdeannews … community activities

Community Development Worker

From Céza Da Luz, the new Community Development Worker

for Hollingdean and Saunders Park.

Since starting in the role, June this year, I have enjoyed meeting people, groups and agencies working locally and had the opportunity to witness some really inspiring work. I have met really enthusiastic people, committed volunteers and community groups doing a range of interesting projects/activities.

I am based at Hollingdean Community Centre and invite you all to pop in and say hello! Highlighting our extremely popular pay-as-you -feel café, every Thursday 12:30- 2pm. I look forward to welcom ing you! As a CDW my role is to assist and support people to improve their own communities through collective action. Often this means working with individuals and small groups - and local agencies.

For example I promote and assist groups applying for the Health Neighbourhood Fund (HNF): This is a fund made available by the City Council for not-for -profit community and voluntary groups operating in Brighton and Hove city . Groups can apply for up to £500, to address one of the following health related issues: Improving diet, nutrition; active living; mental health & wellbeing; healthy ageing; awareness of alcohol, tobacco, drugs and sexual health. The Deadline for Heal th Neighbourhood Fund applications is 13 September 2017. If you interested in applying for HNF, would like to start an interest group or just want to sound out an idea contact me on 01273 236160 or email: [email protected]

News from Friends of & Burstead Woods The Friends of Hollingbury & Burstead Woods have had a busy summer of events as well as our usual weekend work sessions in the woods.

In July we had our community picnic on the edge of the woods. It was a beautiful sunny day and our table heaved

with the weight of the delicious food our members and guests brought to share. We were lucky to have a sighting of several rare white -letter hairstreak butterflies. Also in July, Julia Behrens, a local medicinal plant herbalist, took us on a walk to show us the plants she uses and to talk about their healing properties. Later in the month, the group enjoyed a walk through the Knepp Estate nea r Horsham, led by Dr

Geoffrey Mead, one of our members. Knepp has undergone a transformation under a 're -wilding' project where cattle and deer roam freely, and this has greatly benefited nature. You may have noticed the new footpath signs through the woods. O ur group made the application for the Rights of Way and the main paths are now officially designated and the council has also erected posts indicating the Permissive Paths. The group has also paid for the information boards at the entrances to the woods to be updated. If you would like to help the group financially, or help out at one of our monthly work sessions, you can contact us at [email protected] or visit our website www.fhbw.org.uk, or pick up a membership leaflet from one of the dispensers b y the information boards. You will be assured of a warm welcome and will be helping the local woods on your doorstep for the enjoyment of people and wildlife alike.
