We examined the possible antigenotoxic/genotoxic properties of methanolic extract of H. olympicum subsp. olympicum (HOE) on human lymphocytes by employing sister chromatid exchange, micronucleus and comet assay and analyzed its chemical composition by GCxGC-TOF/MS. The anti-growth activity against MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cell lines was assessed by using the ATP viability assay. Cell death mode was investigated with fluorescence staining and ELISA assays. The major components of the flower and trunk were determined as eicosane, heptacosane, 2-propen-1-ol, hexahydrofarnesyl acetone and α-muurolene. HOE caused significant DNA damage at selected doses (250–750 µg/ml) while chromosomal damage was observed at higher concentrations (500 and 750 µg/ml). HOE demonstrated anti-growth activity in a dose-dependent manner between 3.13–100 µg/ml. -

Sedum Caespitosum (Cav.) DC. – a Study Concerning the Presence of This Plant in Oltenia Ioana Simion
Sedum caespitosum (Cav.) DC. – a study concerning the presence of this plant in Oltenia Ioana Simion University of Craiova, “Al. Buia” Botanical Garden, Craiova, Romania. Corresponding author: I. Simion, [email protected] Abstract. The article indicates the presence on the territory of Oltenia of a rare species from Romanian flora - Sedum caespitosum. The species has been identified in the outskirts of Ciupercenii Vechi, in the flooded area of the Danube meadow, in the northeast of Bogdan Island, in the Natura 2000 site ROSCI0039 Ciuperceni-Desa, in April 23 2017. The plant occurs in the beaten and intensely grazed areas, of Cynodonti-Poetum angustifoliae Rapaics ex Soó – subas. medicaginetosum minimae Sanda et al (2001), togheter with Cynodon dactylon, Erodium cicutarium, Medicago minima, Plantago lanceolata, Scleranthus perennis, Veronica hederifolia. It is an annual species, therefore reveals the xerophylic character of the vegetable association in which it is present, but has no role in diagnosis of the association. Key Words: flora, rare plants, ecology, phytocoenology, Oltenia, Romania. Introduction. Sedum caespitosum (Cav.) DC., species of the Crassulaceae family, is a rare plant in Romania's flora, found in the Red list of vascular plants of Romania as rare (R) (Oltean et al 1994). It was described for the first time in 1971 (Cavanilles 1971), a Spanish botanist, under the name Crassula caespitosa, which later became homotypic synonym (Marhold 2011). Augustin Pyramus de Candolle made description under the name Sedum caespitosum in 1828: 405. The most important synonyms of the species are the following: Sedum erythrocarpum Pau, Sedum rubrum (L.) Thell., Tillaea rubra L. (Marhold 2011); Sedum rubro (L.) Thell., Sedum deserti-hungarici Simonkai (Răvăruţ 1956). -

Seedlings of H. adenotrichum were grown on a modified MS medium containing mannan (10, 50, and 100 mg/L) or pectin (10, 50, and 100 mg/L) for 15 and 30 days. Seedlings of H. adenotrichum were extracted with methanol. The methanol extracts of the seedlings were analysed by HPLC to investigate the changes in hypericin and pseudohypericin levels. The best results were obtained by exposure to 50 mg/L mannan or pectin for 15 days. Mannan stimulated pseudohypericin production up to 2.8-fold and hypericin production up to 1.7-fold. Pectin stimulated pseudohypericin production up to 4.8-fold and hypericin production up to 2.7-fold. The increases in hypericins in response to mannan and pectin demonstrate that these elicitors can be evaluated for production of secondary metabolites in Hypericum species. -

Sterilised seeds were germinated in ¼ MS/Galzy medium. For elicitation, In vitro germinated seedlings were transferred to ¼ MS/Galzy medium containing 0.01 mM and 0.1 mM chrome two weeks after incubation. Seedlings were extracted with methanol after 15 and 30 days of application. The extacts were analysed by HPLC. The amounts of hyperoside and isoquercitrin increased by 1.7 and 1.8 fold at 0.01 mM chrome concentrations in 15 day treatment. There was no significant change in 0.01 mM chrome applications during 30 days of application. In both 15 and 30 day 0.1 mM chrome applications, flavonoid amounts decreased significantly. By the application of 0.01 mM of chrome for 15 days the amount of pseudohypericin incresed up to 2.2 fold. The amount of hypericin also increased up to 1.7 fold. 30 day chrome applications did not cause a significant change in the amount of hypericin. -
Morphological and Phytochemical Diversity Among Hypericum Species of the Mediterranean Basin

(St. John’s wort, Hypericaceae) includes more than 480 species that occur in temperature or tropical mountain regions of the world. Monographic work on the genus has resulted in the recognition and description of 36 taxonomic sections, delineated by specific combinations of morphological characteristics and biogeographic distribution. The Mediterranean Basin has been recognized as a hot spot of diversity for the genus Hypericum, and as such is a region in which many endemic species occur. Species belonging to sections distributed in this area of the world display considerable morphological and phytochemical diversity. Results of a cladistic analysis, based on 89 morphological characters that were considered phylogenetically informative, are given here. In addition, a brief overview of morphological characteristics and the distribution of pharmaceutically relevant secondary metabolites for species native to this region of the world are presented. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ -

Abiotic and Biotic Elicitors–Role in Secondary Metabolites Production Through in Vitro Culture of Medicinal Plants
Chapter 10 Abiotic and Biotic Elicitors–Role in Secondary Metabolites Production through In Vitro Culture of Medicinal Plants Poornananda M. Naik and Jameel M. Al–Khayri Additional information is available at the end of the chapter http://dx.doi.org/10.5772/61442 Abstract Plant secondary metabolites are having the great application in human health and nutri‐ tional aspect. Plant cell and organ culture systems are feasible option for the production of secondary metabolites that are of commercial importance in pharmaceuticals, food ad‐ ditives, flavors, and other industrial materials. The stress, including various elicitors or signal molecules, often induces the secondary metabolite production in the plant tissue culture system. The recent developments in elicitation of plant tissue culture have opened a new avenue for the production of secondary metabolite compounds. Secondary metab‐ olite synthesis and accumulation in cell and organ cultures can be triggered by the appli‐ cation of elicitors to the culture medium. Elicitors are the chemical compounds from abiotic and biotic sources that can stimulate stress responses in plants, leading to the en‐ hanced synthesis and accumulation of secondary metabolites or the induction of novel secondary metabolites. Elicitor type, dose, and treatment schedule are major factors de‐ termining the effects on the secondary metabolite production. The number of parameters, such as elicitor concentrations, duration of exposure, cell line, nutrient composition, and age or stage of the culture, is also important factors influencing the successful production of biomass and secondary metabolite accumulation. This chapter reviews the various abiotic and biotic elicitors applied to cultural system and their stimulating effects on the accumulation of secondary metabolites.
