Knowledge Control and Social Contestation in China's
Science in Movements This book analyzes and compares the origins, evolutionary patterns and consequences of different science and technology controversies in China, including hydropower resistance, disputes surrounding genetically modified organisms and the nuclear power debate. The examination combines social movement theories, communication studies, and science and technology studies. Taking a multidisciplinary approach, the book provides an insight into the interwoven relationship between social and political controls and knowledge monopoly, and looks into a central issue neglected by previous science communication studies: why have different con- troversies shown divergent patterns despite similar social and political contexts? It is revealed that the media environment, political opportunity structures, knowledge-control regimes and activists’ strategies have jointly triggered, nur- tured and sustained these controversies and led to the development of different patterns. Based on these observations, the author also discusses the significance of science communication studies in promoting China’ssocialtransformation and further explores the feasible approach to a more generic framework to understand science controversies across the world. The book will be of value to academics of science communication, science and technology studies, political science studies and sociology, as well as general readers interested in China’s science controversies and social movements. Hepeng Jia is a professor of communication at Soochow University, Suzhou, China. He has worked as a leading science journalist for 20 years and is also a pioneering researcher in the field of science journalism and communication in China. Roger Dunsmore Came to the University of Montana in 1963 As a Freshman Composition Instructor in the English Department
January 30 Introduction to the Series Roger Dunsmore Bio: Roger Dunsmore came to the University of Montana in 1963 as a freshman composition instructor in the English Department. In 1964 he also began to teach half- time in the Humanities Program. He taught his first course in American Indian Literature, Indian Autobiographies, in 1969. In 1971 he was an originating member of the faculty group that formed the Round River Experiment in Environmental Education (1971- 74) and has taught in UM’s Wilderness and Civilization Program since 1976. He received his MFA in Creative Writing (poetry) in 1971 and his first volume of poetry.On The Road To Sleeping ChildHotsprings was published that same year. (Revised edition, 1977.) Lazslo Toth, a documentary poem on the smashing of Michelangelo’s Pieta was published in 1979. His second full length volume of poems,Bloodhouse, 1987, was selected by the Yellowstone Art Center, Billings, MX for their Regional Writer’s Project.. The title poem of his chapbook.The Sharp-Shinned Hawk, 1987, was nominated by the Koyukon writer, Mary TallMountain for a Pushcat Prize. He retired from full-time teaching after twenty-five years, in 1988, but continues at UM under a one- third time retiree option. During the 1988-89 academic year he was Humanities Scholar in Residence for the Arizona Humanities Council, training teachers at a large Indian high school on the Navajo Reservation. A chapbook of his reading at the International Wildlife Film Festival, The Bear Remembers, was published in 1990. Spring semester, 1991, (and again in the fall semester, 1997) he taught modern American Literature as UM’s Exchange Fellow with Shanghai International Studies University in mainland China. -

This began with point-to-point communication between mainframe computers and terminals, expanded to point-to-point connections between computers and then early research into packet switching. Packet switched networks such as ARPANET, Mark I at NPL in the UK, CYCLADES, Merit Network, Tymnet, and Telenet, were developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s using a variety of protocols. The ARPANET in particular led to the development of protocols for internetworking, where multiple separate networks could be joined together into a network of networks. In 1982 the Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP) was standardized and the concept of a world-wide network of fully interconnected TCP/IP networks called the Internet was introduced. -

Remembering Van: Three Madison families and other tales “Van had many enthusiasms and loyalties, but none exceeded those he felt for the University of Wisconsin and its home, Madison.” 1 Charles Van Hise Born in 1857, Charles Van Hise was a distinguished geologist who had been elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1902. In 1903, he was named President of the University of Wisconsin 2 In 1904, Van Hise recruited Charles Russell Bardeen, a member of the first class to graduate of the Johns Hopkins Medical School, to found a medical school at the University of Wisconsin John Bardeen is at the right hand end. His grandfather, Charles W Bardeen, is second from the left. 3 Charles Sumner Slichter 1864-1946 In 1906, Van Hise appointed Charles S. Slichter head of the math department. An applied mathematician with interests in flow of liquids through porous media, Slichter realized the department needed to strengthen the faculty in pure mathematics. 4 Edward B. Van Vleck 1863‐1943 Edward B Van Vleck, had earned a PhD in mathematics at Gottingen in1893, and was a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Slichter’s first action as department head was to recruit Van Vleck to bring strength in pure mathematics. 5 John Hasbrouck Van Vleck was born in 1899. His interest in trains began at a early age. Van attended his first Wisconsin football game at age 10.(Wisconsin vs Minnesota) It was the first game at which the band played the famous song “On Wisconsin”. Diamond and the Fate of Cultures Alexandre Dittrich* Universidade Federal do Paraná Resumo Um dos aspectos mais interessantes e polêmicos da obra de B. F. Skinner é sua interpretação sobre a evolução das culturas. De acordo com o autor, as conseqüências de práticas culturais retroagem sobre as culturas, no sentido de aumentar ou diminuir suas chances de sobrevivência. O livro “Colapso”, do biólogo e geógrafo norte-americano Jared Diamond, apresenta semelhanças marcantes com a teoria de Skinner, evidenciando que as conseqüências de práticas culturais têm influência decisiva sobre o destino das culturas. Este artigo busca detalhar tais semelhanças, argumentando que o livro de Diamond serve como complemento à teoria skinneriana, pois ilustra com exemplos concretos as afirmações gerais de Skinner sobre a evolução das culturas e, com isso, confere-lhes maior clareza e credibilidade. Palavras-chave: Skinner, Burrhus Frederic; Diamond, Jared Mason; cultura; behaviorismo radical. Abstract One of the most interesting and polemic features of B. F. Skinner’s work is his interpretation about cultural evolution. According to that author, the consequences of cultural practices have a retroactive effect over the cultures, increasing or decreasing their chances of survival. The book “Collapse” – written by the north-Ameri- can biologist and geographer Jared Diamond – shows remarkable resemblances with Skinner’s theory making clear that the consequences of cultural practices have a decisive influence over the fate of cultures. This paper aims to detail such resemblances, considering that Diamond’s book serves as a complement to Skinner’s theory, because it illustrates with concrete examples the general statements made by Skinner about cultural evolution and, by doing so, makes these statements clearer and more credible. -

Enclosure 10 Collaborations in Relativistic Astrophysics with China The exchange in the field of astrophysics between Italy and China has a long history dating back to the transfer to China of a telescope by Lì Mǎdòu (Matteo Ricci) and the translation in Chinese of the Euclid’s books by his student Xu Guangqi in the 16th century. In recent years the modern contributions in the field of Astrophysics has been carried forward by professor T.D. Lee and in the fields of Relativistic Field Theories and Einstein General Relativity Theory by professor C.N. Yang, both Nobel Laureates in 1956. They both were Chinese students of Enrico Fermi in 1940s. Following the first visit to China of professor Remo Ruffini in 1978, by invitation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) a vast number of collaborations have started in the field of Relativistic Astrophysics, following the classic article “Introducing the Black Hole” by Remo Ruffini and John Archibald Wheeler (Physics Today, January 1971, pages 30-41) in the Institute Advance Study (IAS) at Princeton. The first visit of prof Remo Ruffini to China, Beijing and Tsinghua Universities, National Observatories of CAS Based on a series of lectures delivered in China, Li Zhi Fang and Remo Ruffini wrote book “Basic Concepts of Relativistic Astrophysics” (World Scientific, 1983, Chinese version, Shanghai Scientific publisher 1981). This fundamental and didactical book has been worldwide used by undergraduate and graduate students for many generations.
