Preface Harrap has a long-standing reputation for excellent coverage of slang and colloquial language, and we were the first major dictionary publisher to offer a bilingual slang dictionary. Now in its third edition, Pardon My French! has been fully revised and updated to reflect the ever-changing face of French and English slang. We have retained long-established terms but added a wealth of new material to bring the book firmly into the 21st century, including bingo wings, chav, MILF and tangoed for English, and larver, c’est de la louse and pipole for French. Like its predecessors, this book also includes many humorous and colourful expressions and offers an insight into the popular culture of both countries. What is slang? The word “slang” is sometimes confused with “jargon”, that is, the language used within particular social or professional groups. We have excluded such terms from this book (except for some which have gained common currency), focusing instead on a range of non-standard language from the colloquial to the vulgar – the language heard or used by us all every day in informal contexts. Labelling Our labelling system is designed to help the reader choose the right word for the situation and avoid embarrassing faux pas. All of the language is this book is by definition colloquial, and should not be used in a formal context. There are, however, different degrees of informality, which are indicated as follows: the symbol [!] denotes that the word or expression may cause offence and should be used with care, while [!!] is reserved for vulgar and taboo expressions which will shock in most contexts and should be used with extreme caution. Racist and homophobic terms are marked Offensive/Injurieux, as these will invariably cause offence. However, certain items like bird/nana which could be considered sexist or politically incorrect have not been labelled, as they are open to interpretation depending on the context and the intended meaning. Where possible, translations have been carefully selected to match the register (level of informality) of the source expression. However, in some cases there is no slang equivalent and a neutral translation has been given, followed by the symbol . iv Further information More than just a dictionary, Pardon My French! is enriched with nuggets of linguistic and cultural information that make it a pleasure to browse. The thematic panels from the previous edition have been enlarged and updated, and several more have been added, exploring slang-rich fields such as alcohol/ alcool, body parts/parties du corps and seduction/séduction. Other panels focus on particular types of slang, for example Australian slang, insults/insultes, tabloid speak, argot des banlieues, verlan. An international outlook Although many slang terms are used on both sides of the Atlantic, some remain typically British or North American. These are indicated with the labels Br and Am, both at headword and at translation level. We would like to thank Orin Hargraves, lexicographer and expert on American English, for checking all the existing American material and suggesting a wealth of new words and expressions. In addtition, the English-French side includes words and phrases of Scottish (Scot), Irish (Ir), Australian (Austr ) and Black American (Noir Am) origin, while the French-English side covers French from Belgium (Belg), Switzerland (Suisse) and Canada (Can). v Préface Les dictionnaires Harrap se sont toujours distingués par la place qu’ils accordent à l’argot et à la langue parlée en général. Ceci est la troisème édition du Harrap’s Slang, revue, augmentée et entièrement mise à jour de façon à refléter l’évolution des argots anglais et français. Qu’entend-on par argot ? Le terme « argot » est parfois confondu avec le terme « jargon », à savoir la langue propre à certains groupes professionnels ou sociaux. Nous n’avons inclu que les termes de jargon qui ont été absorbés par la langue populaire. Notre ouvrage est donc un dictionnaire d’argot au sens le plus large du terme : un dictionnaire du français et de l’anglais non conventionnels, dont le registre s’étend du familier au très vulgaire. Les indications d’usage Des indicateurs d’usage éviteront au lecteur de se mettre dans des situations embarrassantes en utilisant à son insu des mots qui ne manqueraient pas de choquer. Ceci étant un dictionnaire d’argot, le fait même qu’un terme (ou une expression) y soit traité est le signe qu’il appartient à la langue familière, et qu’il ne doit donc pas être utilisé dans un contexte formel. Il existe cependant différents registres au sein de la langue familière, que nous avons choisi d’indiquer de la façon suivante : le symbole [!] indique qu’un mot ou une expression risque de choquer et doit être utilisé(e) avec circonspection ; le symbole [!!] est réservé aux termes et expressions vulgaires ou tabous. Les termes accompagnés de ce symbole doivent être utilisés avec la plus grande prudence. Les termes racistes et homophobes sont accompagnés de la mention Offensive/ Injurieux car ils sont intrinsèquement injurieux ; des termes tels que bird/nana ne sont accompagnés d’aucune mention particulière car leurs connotations dépendent surtout du contexte dans lequel ils sont employés. Nous nous sommes efforcés, dans nos traductions, de respecter le niveau de langue des mots et expressions de la langue source. Cependant, lorsque ceci vi s’est avéré impossible, nous avons indiqué que la traduction donnée est neutre en lui accolant le symbole . Pour aider l’utilisateur Le Harrap’s Slang est plus qu’un simple dictionnaire : en effet, il propose des informations linguistiques et culturelles qui en font un ouvrage très agréable à feuilleter.
