TAPAS IN THE ---RG VEDA TAPAS IN THE RG VEDA By ANTHONY L. MURUOCK, B.A. A Thesis Submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts McMaster University April 1983 MASTER OF ARTS (1983) McMaster University (Religious Studies) Hamilton, Ontario TITLE: Tapas in the fuL Veda AUTHOR: Anthony L. Murdock, B.A. (York University) SUPERVISORS: Professor D. Kinsley Professor P. Younger Professor P. Granoff NUMBER OF PAGES: v, 95 ii ABSTRACT It is my contention in this thesis that the term tapas means heat, and heat only, in the Bi[ Veda. Many reputable scholars have suggested that tapas refers to asceticism in several instances in the RV. I propose that these suggestions are in fact unnecessary. To determine the exact meaning of tapas in its many occurrences in the RV, I have given primary attention to those contexts (i.e. hymns) in which the meaning of tapas is absolutely unambiguous. I then proceed with this meaning in mind to more ambiguous instances. In those instances where the meaning of tapas is unambiguous it always refers to some kind of heat, and never to asceticism. Since there are unambiguous cases where ~apas means heat in the RV, and there are no unambiguous instances in the RV where tapas means asceticism, it only seems natural to assume that tapas means heat in all instances. The various occurrences of tapas as heat are organized in a new system of contextual classifications to demonstrate that tapas as heat still has a variety of functions and usages in the RV.

NANNY Written by Nikyatu Jusu “For the mouths of her children quickly forgot the taste of her nipples, and years ago they had begun to look past her face into the nearest stretch of sky.” --Toni Morrison, Sula Cherry Rev. (7/18/20) 2. 1 INT. UPPER EAST SIDE APARTMENT - DAY 1 THE SOUND OF WATER RUNNING, unfettered, unencumbered--perhaps overflowing... We creep through a longish hallway littered with doorways and framed pictures. In these pictures are various poses of a PERFECT UPPER EAST SIDE FAMILY comprised of a WHITE COUPLE [30’s] and their angelic BABY BOY [4]. At the foot of one doorway, shards of light refract like luminescent knives off a pool of blood. We float past... A faintly discernible larger than life arachnid shadow ambles along hallway walls. Whispers. Barely discernible--then louder emanate from-- An AFRO-DOMINICAN WOMAN [45], at the end of the hallway. Her back is to us. She’s frantic. Desperate. She presses a phone to her ear--in her other hand: a top of the line, bloody, French Laguiole steak knife. She stumbles through tears. AFRO DOMINICAN WOMAN (spanish) I...don’t know. I don’t know what happened. I was tired. Confused. It wasn’t the boy. It was something else-- An INHUMAN GROAN echoes just behind her. She freezes, turning slowly and we see her face for the first time: palpable fear. Defense scratches etch her face. A SMALL SPIDER emerges from her ear, making its way across her cheek. She drops the bloody phone as she faces an ANIMALISTIC WAIL.

A MODERN FAMILY: THE PERFORMANCE OF “FAMILY” AND FAMILIALISM IN CONTEMPORARY TELEVISION SERIES by Jennifer M. Fogel A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Communication) in The University of Michigan 2012 Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Amanda D. Lotz, Chair Professor Susan J. Douglas Professor Regina Morantz-Sanchez Associate Professor Bambi L. Haggins, Arizona State University © Jennifer M. Fogel 2012 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I owe my deepest gratitude to the members of my dissertation committee – Dr. Susan J. Douglas, Dr. Bambi L. Haggins, and Dr. Regina Morantz-Sanchez, who each contributed their time, expertise, encouragement, and comments throughout this entire process. These women who have mentored and guided me for a number of years have my utmost respect for the work they continue to contribute to our field. I owe my deepest gratitude to my advisor Dr. Amanda D. Lotz, who patiently refused to accept anything but my best work, motivated me to be a better teacher and academic, praised my successes, and will forever remain a friend and mentor. Without her constructive criticism, brainstorming sessions, and matching appreciation for good television, I would have been lost to the wolves of academia. One does not make a journey like this alone, and it would be remiss of me not to express my humble thanks to my parents and sister, without whom seven long and lonely years would not have passed by so quickly. They were both my inspiration and staunchest supporters. Without their tireless encouragement, laughter, and nurturing this dissertation would not have been possible.

FOLKLORE IN THE MASS MEDIA Priscilla Denby Folklore Institute Indiana University As the accompanying cartoon (see Appendix ) suggests ,l the disclosure of the powerful phenomenon known as the "media" in contemporary society is analogous to the opening of Pandora's box. It would seem that the media, a relatively new societal force, has literally "sprung up, It full-grown, in some mysterious fashion to the surprise and bewilderment of many -- and the consternation of a few -- and become a dominant influence in our cul- ture. Moreover, in keeping with the mythological analogy, it may be safe to assume that the artist equates the media with the societal ills which were released st the touch of Pandora's hand. Whether the media is indeed a general evil in present-day American society is debatable; what is to be briefly discussed here, however, is its effect upon, and how it is affected by, folklore. Based upon the small sampling of data collected in this study, I would tentatively hold that the media's influence upon and use of folklore has undergone a great change. In the 1920's and 1930's when American society seemed to be in need of some kind of folk image as a means of self-definition and identification, the media graciously obliged; the result was a virtual inundation of the "fakelore" typified by the "folk hero" tradition of a Paul Bunyan or a Johnny Appleseed. Today such figures still inhabit the media. Yet as far as I can tell, contemporary media is less cmcerned with the invention and promulgation of non-traditional lore and more concerned with traditional texts used in various contexts.

  • Letter from the President
VARSITY O 2019 FALL NEWS LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Fellow Varsity O Members, Happy Fall! Autumn officially means many things: students back on The Ohio State campus, the crisp air with crunchy leaves beneath each step, our fall-sport Buckeyes taking their respective fields and courts, Saturdays in The SHOE, and… Varsity O’s most exciting time of year! In early September, we celebrated our 42nd year of The Ohio State University Athletics Hall of Fame. Our incredible inductees were legends in their sport, Olympic medalists, international icons, and can I just say, “Amazing human beings that were fun, kind, humble, and gracious to be awarded with such prestige!” As we roll into October, I want to remind all of you of our Homecoming Tailgate which will be at the French Fieldhouse on October 5th from 4-7pm prior to the Michigan State game. This is a great opportunity to join Varsity O and fellow Buckeyes for a food buffet, cash-bar, music, corn-hole, photo booth, and other fun surprises we have planned. We will also be celebrating our Jim Jones Career Achievement Award and Varsity O Loyalty award winners as well! Through the 2019-2020 academic year, the University is celebrating its storied and proud history of 150 years. We are calling it, “The Sesquicentennial Year of Celebration”. And although our Athletic Department does not date quite that far back, certainly the contributions and traditions of OSU Athletics has played a storied role in the history of the BEST university in the country. Since the earliest days, OSU athletes have inspired millions across the globe, and have delivered some of the most historic and thrilling moments in collegiate sports.

  • Ender's Game Took the Sf World by Storm, Sweeping the Awards
Ender’s Game Andrew "Ender" Wiggin thinks he is playing computer simulated war games; he is, in fact, engaged in something far more desperate. The result of genetic experimentation, Ender may be the military genius Earth desperately needs in a war against an alien enemy seeking to destroy all human life. The only way to find out is to throw Ender into ever harsher training, to chip away and find the diamond inside, or destroy him utterly. Ender Wiggin is six years old when it begins. He will grow up fast. But Ender is not the only result of the experiment. The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway almost as long. Ender's two older siblings, Peter and Valentine, are every bit as unusual as he is, but in very different ways. While Peter was too uncontrollably violent, Valentine very nearly lacks the capability for violence altogether. Neither was found suitable for the military's purpose.
