“THE CITIZENS POST” DAVO’S DIARY

Good afternoon and a warm welcome to everyone for this afternoons league match against a very decent Larkhall side. Phil Bater has done a good job there and they are a very dangerous side containing good players, we will certainly need to be at our very best to get the result we want, we won a tight game 2-1 at their place, let’s hope we can repeat that! I wish their players, staff, supporters a pleasant afternoon and a safe trip home afterwards.

Thursday was a really good and enjoyable day for the club (despite the very creditable result), we put on a great show against a very strong Southampton u23’s, we made sure they were given all the things they asked for and the pitch was in good condition, we gave them a good work out and we played the game the right way which they appreciated! They commented on how good a work out it was and praised how good our young side was, there were 11 teenagers who played a part in the game, most of which 16/17, this is amazing for the club and gives us a really exciting future as they develop! Obviously disappointed we lost 3-0 but it was only 1-0 for long periods and they didn’t actually pepper us with shot after shot, so it’s full credit to everyone involved!

Player wise we are suffering a little bit after several injuries of late, we have concerns over several players, we will definitely be without Danny King and we will have to see how the others shape up.

Keep up that great support, it’s a crucial time coming up and we need you all!

Up the Citizens!

Davo

“THE CITIZENS POST” CHAIRMAN’S COMMENTS

There were two interesting matches this week involving the two contenders at this afternoon’s match. First of all congratulations to Larkhall for beating Southern Premier Weymouth by one goal to nil away at the Bob Lucas Stadium in the League Cup third round. And respect to the Winchester City Reserves who played Southampton U23’s in the Southampton Senior Cup on Thursday evening here at the Simplyhealth City Ground. Our young team, which featured 11 teenagers acquitted themselves excellently before finally going down by three goals to nil to this side from a Premiership club. We should be very proud of your up and coming youngsters, who will provide a bright future for the club.

Many thanks to all who prepared the club and pitch for this showpiece match. And a crowd of around 350 must have been some kind of record for a youth match at the Club! Ray, our groundsman prepared a fine pitch for this time of year. Also the floodlights were in good shape after some attention this week, prior to our regular floodlight test which we passed, well exceeding the lux level required at our level of the game.

And finally if you look around the ground you will see that our main sponsors, Simplyhealth, have rebranded the whole ground with their logo. We really are now the Simplyhealth City Ground!

Enjoy the game

“THE CITIZENS POST” IN THE OPPOSITION DUGOUT… LARKHALL ATHLETIC CLUB HISTORY

Larkhall Athletic Football Club dates from 1914. In 1951 the club regained access to its home at Plain Ham after it had been turned over to allotments during WWII. Since then, it has gone from strength to strength, achieving the status in 2004 as a Premier Club and in 2008 as an FA Charter Standard Community Club, the first club to achieve this recognition in Bath. This status was renewed in 2011 and 2014. Initially the club rented the Plain Ham match by match. It offered a sloping pitch, a timber hut for changing and a single tin bath for washing, a nearby standpipe providing the water source. In 1962 a cricket team was formed and the club became Larkhall Sports Club. Around the same time the then Bath City Council granted the club a long lease on the ground at Plain Ham. A small club house was erected in 1965. In 1975 the main football pitch at Plain Ham was levelled to create a pitch suitable for senior football. In 1983 the club house and changing rooms were doubled in size and in 1989 the club purchased adjoining land at Pow’s Field which today is used by the Youth Section and the Sunday Veterans team. In 1996, aided by a Lottery Grant, the club further extended and improved its club house. In 2004 Plain Ham was re-levelled, drainage improved and floodlights installed, all with the help of the Football Stadia Improvement Fund. At the same time the car park was extended and new floodlights installed on the training area. In 2005, with tremendous financial support from the local community and members past and present, the club completed the purchase of Plain Ham from the Bath and North East Local Authority. In 2010 the battle with drainage of Plain Ham was once again a priority and in 2011 the hard standing was further extended to completely surround the pitch. At the same time new protective fencing was installed in the bottom corner of the pitch, new safety rails were constructed in front of the stand, pitch side rails and posts were refurbished, a turnstile was created at the entrance and new lighting was connected. To address ongoing drainage problems the pitch was gravel banded from across the pitch. Funding from the Football Stadia Improvement Fund helped towards this work. To meet FA grading requirements, applications for funding to Sport England and Football Stadia Improvement Fund were successful, securing 50% of the cost of the project to construct new changing rooms and to extend and update the clubhouse to provide improved hospitality facilities for spectators and visiting officials. Work started in December 2012 and the formal opening of the new facilities was celebrated with guest of honour the Mayor of Bath, Councillor Malcolm Lees, in August 2013.

In late 2013, inspired by recent developments on and off the field, friends of the club contributed to more facility improvements that had been identified in order to satisfy Grade E of the FA Grading requirements, including additional seats, more covered standing, improved turnstiles and new outside toilets. This work was completed to enable the club to accept promotion in our double winning centenary year. Further facility improvements, including a new ground boundary fence, pitch perimeter infill and a medical room have enabled us to satisfy the Grade D requirements. Half of the funding for this work came from the Football Stadia Improvement Fund. In 2014 the club celebrated its centenary year with gusto. Performances on the field provided an appropriate backdrop, the first-team manager was selected as manager of the year by the Western League, we were treated to a marvellous reception in the Guildhall Bath hosted jointly by the Mayor of Bath and the Chairman of BANES Council, and returned to the Guildhall for a Centenary Dinner in September 2014. On the pitch the first team have a long list of honours, including: the Somerset Senior Cup in seasons in 1975-76 and 2003-04, the Western League First Division Championship in 1988-89 and 2008-09, the Western League Premier Division Championship in 2010-11 and the Western League double - Premier Division Championship and Les Phillips Cup – in 2013-14. The Larks reached the last 16 of the FA Vase three seasons in succession; in 2012-13 and 2013-14 we lost to the eventual finalists of the competition. In 2014 we gained promotion to the Southern League. Our first season was a huge success and we reached the play-off final where we narrowly lost out 3-2 to Stratford Town. We also enjoyed a wonderful FA Cup campaign defeating Merthyr Town and Truro City away before losing in a replay with Gosport Borough from the FA Conference. In 2015-16 the first team finished the season in the top half of the Southern League Division 1 South and West table, had another fine FA Cup run including taking Conference side Havant and Waterlooville to a replay, and reached the final of the Somerset FA Premier Cup for the first time in club history. Elsewhere, the Reserves just missed out on promotion to the Premier Division of the Somerset County Football League and the Ladies team capped a successful league season by retaining the Somerset FA Senior Cup for a second consecutive year. In 2008 Larkhall Sports Club was recognised as the BANES Club of the Year by the Chairman of BANES Council. In December 2011 we were selected by our local paper, the Bath Chronicle, as the local sports team of the year; quite an honour given the richness of the local competition. In 2011, two of the club's longest serving officials were recognised by the Somerset County FA, receiving the award of Somerset County FA Volunteer of the Year and a Somerset County FA Long Service Award. In 2012 the Somerset FA added Clive Burge to our hall of fame by recognising his ‘Outstanding Contribution to Community Football’. In 2014 the club was once again selected by the local paper for an award, this time as Senior Team of the Year. In July 2015 we were honoured to receive FA Charter Standard Community Club of the year award from the Somerset FA. This season we are looking to build on the success and enjoyment of our first three seasons in the Southern League while recognising the very stern challenge that this will present. We offer to all of our visitors a very warm welcome to what is probably the prettiest ground in the country. Details of all sections can be found through the club's web-site: http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/larkhallathleticfc/. We are also on Twitter: @larkhallafc (first team); @larkhallALFC (Ladies); @LarkhallYouthFC (Youth Section).

“THE CITIZENS POST” MALCOLM’S MUSINGS

We welcome Larkhall to Winchester for today’s game. As this is only Larkhall’s fourth second season in the Southern League the clubs had not met prior to the 2015/16 season. season. Interestingly enough when I first heard the name Larkhall mentioned in football circles I thought that they were a team from Larkhill near Salisbury even though the spelling is one letter different.

Earlier iu the season we won 2-1 at Larkhall thanks to header from Rob Carr and a further goal from Pat Cox after they had drawn level. Our cause was helped by the fact that they were reduced to 10 men on the stroke of half time, but it was a good team effort from the players. We have in fact won all three games we have played at Larkhall’s ground, but both of their visits to this ground have produced drawn games, with last season’s corresponding match finishing goalless. At the time of writing Larkhall were just below mid-table, but with a positive goal difference., but they have had excellent away wins at Wimborne, Cirencester and on their own patch scored five goals without reply against North Leigh. I went to last season’s match at Larkhall and it was quite a challenge to negotiate the steps in the dark on the journey to the coach as the hill is quite steep. I did however enjoy their cheese rolls and certainly had more than my fair share of them. Larkhall were formed in 1914 and spent their early years in local football before joining a newly reformed Western League Division 1. In their first nine seasons in this division they did not finish higher than 9th and for four consecutive seasons they finished in the bottom five. However they did much better in the next four seasons finishing 5th, 7th, 5th and 1st, but despite their title success remained in division 1. After finishing 6th in 1989/90 they did not finish in the top half of the table until 2003/04, when they achieved 8th place. They followed up this 8th position by achieving 5th, 7th. 5th, 3rd and 1st positions in the next five seasons and this time they took up their place in the Premier Division. After finishing 14th in their first season in the Premier Division they won the title in the second season, but due to the ground requirements for promotion remained a Western League club. However after finishing 3rd and 5th in the next two seasons, a very impressive 2013/14 season saw them win the title with 34 wins, 5 draws and 1 loss with 114 goals saw them once again take the Premier Division title (they finished 21 points above the 2nd placed team) and this time they were able to take up their place in the Southern League. Their first season of Southern League football saw them finish 5th, but after beating Evesham in the playoff semi final they lost to Stratford Town in the playoff final. Last season they finished a respectable 11th, and at the time of writing they were just below mid-table. I first identified Larkhall as a real force to be reckoned with when as a Western League Division 1 team they beat Wimborne who were invariably one of the best Wessex League clubs in the 2008/09 F A Vase and it was no surprise that they got promoted that season. They went on to reach the 4th round of the competition that season, and the 5th round proper in 2011/12, 2012/13 and 2013/14, in both of the two latter cases losing to eventual finalists, They have also won the Western League Cup once and the Somerset Senior Cup twice, while their reserves play in the Somerset County League. They are not to be confused with Larkhall Thistle who are Scotland-s oldest junior club and have 13 ex-players who have gone on to be Scottish internationals, five of them being captains. Last season’s Winchester goalkeeper Lewis Noice played against us while on loan from Eastleigh and Jack Masterton and Ollie Griggs two other players with Eastleigh connections also played for them in 2015/16.

“THE CITIZENS POST” MALCOLM’S MUSINGS (PART 2 – SOUTHAMPTON)

With their great Academy from which the likes of Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade- Chamberlain and Adam Lallana Southampton football club has had a reputation for producing some great young talent and before that the likes of Matt Le Tissier, Rodney Wallace and Alan Shearer also began their careers at Southampton.

However going back 50 years we are almost to the day at the point where Southampton sold to Tottenham Hotspur with Frank Saul who only eight months earlier had scored an F A Cup final goal moving in the opposite direction. Chivers was very much a local boy who went to school in the area, but Southampton also had an emerging Mike Channon in their ranks to play alongside Ron Davies and Saul. George O'Brien and Martin C hivers had been Southampton's leading goalscorers in their promotion season, but now both had been sold.

Southampton certainly made some astute signings in their early days of top flight football and have spent more than 40 of the last 50 years in English football's top division.
