4 Sommari - Summaries The contribution of the Salesians of Frascati to the assistance of the victims of the bombing. Chronicle of the events from 8 September 1943 to 4 June 1944. 2015 - Digital Collections - Biblioteca Don Bosco - Roma - http://digital.biblioteca.unisal.it FRANCESCO MOTTO On 8 September 1943, a few hours before General Badoglio announced on the radio the armistice signed by the Italians with the Allied Forces on 3 September, Anglo-American aircraft heavily bombed the town of Frascati, causing hundreds of casualties among the civilian population. In the nine months of the German occupa- tion of Rome, especially in conjunction with the allied landing at Anzio at the end of January 1944 other bombardments were directed against the Roman castles, and the inhabitants endured a severe struggle for survival. The article documents the activi- ties of material and spiritual assistance offered by the Salesians of Frascati to the local population in the terrible war situation in which they had become involved. Sommari - Summaries 5 Requests to Don Bosco for foundations in Southern Italy (1879-1888) 2015 - Digital Collections - Biblioteca Don BoscoFRANCESCO - Roma C- ASELLAhttp://digital.biblioteca.unisal.it The journey of Don Bosco to Naples (1880), a more extensive dissemination of the Salesian Bulletin and a better knowledge of what the Salesian Congregation was achieving in Italy, Europe and Latin America, led bishops, priests and laity to request Don Bosco to set up salesian foundations also in Southern Italy. The first part of the study makes it clear that among the many problems which characterised Italy (and in particular the southern part of the peninsula) in the last two decades of the nineteenth century, there were some fundamental questions: the historical and social context with the ever-growing division between the north and south of the country, emigra- tion, the laicization of the school, the formation of the clergy and the problem of the seminaries, the high rate of illiteracy in the south – all these were reflected in the re- quests for foundations made to Don Bosco The second part documents the 29 re- quests made to Don Bosco from southern parts; they involved also Don Rua and so are followed up but not beyond the turn of the century. Further developments will be merely mentioned and references given to the archives. 14 of these requests were for seminaries, 10 for schools, and one for a work for deaf mutes. However Don Bosco was not able to realize more than the precarious experience of Brindisi. What emerges is a historical cross-section with a growing formative, scholastic, educative and pastoral demand addressed to a new Congregation which was consid- ered more suitable for responding to the requirements of the times and in particular to the needs of the young. To this educative demand Don Rua later gave a more partic- ular response, while receiving at the same time (as will be seen in a separate study) numerous requests for salesian foundations which continued to come in from southern Italy. THE SOLICITUDE OF THE CHURCH FOR PRIESTLY VOCATIONS, FORMATION AND EDUCATION Frands Bonnid A rediscovered ecc1esiology of the Church as the People of God has given the Church today a new pastoral way to help the members of the community to accept the call of God to serve the Christian community. In the Synod Bishops of 1990 about The Formation ofpriests in the circumstances of today and in the Apostolic Exhortation Pastores dabo vobis (25 March 1992) of John Paul II, the Church proposed the evangelisation of the environment where Christians live as the basis of the pastoral work for vocations. o OVER THE CENTURIES 0.1 The institution of Seminaries The Council of Trent established the Seminaries on the fifteenth day of July 1563 when canon 18 of the decree De Reformatione was approved.' The purpose of establishing the seminaries was to provide the right environment wherein the candidates to the priesthood could be provided with the formation that made them true pastors of the Christian community.z After the Council of Trent, the Church wanted to implement the prescriptions of the Council about the establishment of the seminaries. The seminaries established by Cardinal Carlo Borromeo served as models to all seminaries that were founded later on in the dioceses of the Church in Europe. Borromeo wrote the Institutiones ad universum regimen pertinentes (1582)3 which later on were codified in Canon Law (1917). He also appointed the superiors of the Seminary Institution naming them Rector, confessor and bursar.4 This seminary model was referred to and called the Caroline Seminary.

  • Caterina Zecchini (1877-1948)
CATERINA ZECCHINI (1877-1948) other Caterina Zecchini was born in Venice, Italy on May 24, 1877, Mand died there on October 17, 1948. We have scant information about her youth: baptized on June 3, 1978, in the church of St. Giacomo dell’Orio, she was confirmed at the church of Saints Geremia and Lucia on May 25, 1885. Known to be very sensitive, yet she possessed an exuberant, lively, and witty character. When she was ten years old, after completing elementary school, Caterina began working at home helping her father, a wine merchant, with his accounting. She developed an ever growing concern for the poor, especially for children of her parish whom she met on the streets and whom she often brought to her home to give them food and clothing. This charity that grew in her heart was destined, through the grace of God, to grow in time until she could no longer limit herself to helping the occasional poor person. She felt the need to work with all her strength for the spread of the Kingdom of God throughout the world by serving those whom Caterina called the true poor: those who did not yet know God.
