Strenna 2019 «So that my joy may be in you » (Jn 15,11) HOLINESS FOR YOU TOO My Dear Brothers and Sisters, my Dear Salesian Family, Continuing our century-old tradition, at the beginning of this New Year 2019 I address myself to each one of you, in every part of the “Salesian world” that as the Salesian Family we constitute in more than 140 countries. I do so while giving a commentary on a subject very familiar to us, with a title taken directly from the Apostolic Exhortation of Pope Francis on the call to holiness in today’s world: Gaudete et Exsultate1. In choosing this subject and this title I want to translate into our own language and in the light of our charismatic sensitivity the strong appeal to holiness that Pope Francis has addressed to the whole Church.2 Therefore I want to emphasise those points that are typically “our own” in the context of our Salesian spirituality, those shared by all the 31 groups of our Salesian Family as the charismatic inheritance received from the Holy Spirit through/by means of our beloved Father Don Bosco, who will certainly help us to live our lives with the same deep joy that comes from the Lord: «So that my joy may be in you » (Jn 15,11). Who are these words addressed to? I can assure you that they are addressed to everyone. To all of you my dear Salesian confreres SDB. To all of you sisters and brothers of the various different congregations and institutes of consecrated and lay life in our Salesian Family.

  • The Salesian Brother's Spiritual Identity
The Salesian Brother's Spiritual Identity: A Lay Consecrated Youth Minister Br. John M. Rasor, SDB rticle 45 of the Salesian Constitutions goes to some pains to treat the Salesian brother's place in the community in parallel with that for the A ordained Salesian.1 It clearly shows that Salesian brothers are an integral part of the community, not an add-on or subordinate vocation: Each of us is responsible for the conunon mission, and participates in it with the richness of his own personal gifts and with the lay and priestly characteristics of the one Salesian vocation. The Salesian brother brings to every field of education and pastoral activity the specific qualities of his lay status, which make him in a particular way a witness to God's Kingdom in the world,2 close as he is to the young and to the realities of working life. The Salesian priest or deacon brings to the common work of promoting human development and of educating in the faith the specific quality of his ministry, which makes him a sign of Christ the Good Shepherd, especially by .preaching the Gospel and administering the sacraments. The significant and complementary presence of clerical and lay Salesians in the community constitutes an essential element of its makeup and of its apostolic completeness.3 ' Much of this article is taken from John Rasor, The Spiritual Identity of the Salesian Brother in the Light ofOfficial Salesian Documents (Rome, UPS doctoral thesis 1995). The thesis covers some of Don Bosco's informal talks, plus all the documents, from 1858 to the date of publication.

DIREZIONE GENERALE OPERE DON BOSCO Via della Pisana 1111 - 00163 Roma Il Rettor Maggiore Rome, October 15, 2013 Dear Salesian Cooperators, As you know, on October 9, 2013, Pope Francis authorized the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints to promulgate the Decree of Heroic Virtues for the Servant of God Attilio Luciano Giordani, Layman and Father of a Family, Cooperator of the Salesian Society of St. John Bosco. He was born in Milan, Italy, on February 3, 1913, and died in Campo Grande, Brazil, on December 18, 1972. Attilio Giordani, exemplary husband and father, oratory animator and catechist, missionary and evangelizer, a most timely figure of a Salesian Cooperator is now Venerable. I would like this message to be an invitation extended to the entire Salesian Family, and, in particular, to your Association and to the Salesian Provinces of Lombardy and Emilia Romagna, who promoted his Cause for Beatification and Canonization, to make his life, his message for the family, and for education according to Don Bosco’s spirit known, and to offer up a chorus of prayer to ask for the grace of a miracle by invoking his intercession. Attilio Giordani, model of family life. He was a husband and father who was present to his family, a man rich in great faith and serenity, living austerity and Gospel poverty by choice for the sake of those most in need. For Attilio, his marriage to Noemi in May of 1944 was not just a word “given”, but it was, above all, a “sacrament” of Christ. He strove to express the sanctity and indissolubility of this bond in his daily life and through the education of his children.

  • Salesian Cooperators – Rome
Salesian Cooperators – Rome 2 Official Commentary 2015 on the Project of Apostolic Life Association of Salesian Cooperators Dear Salesian Cooperators, We are living in a time of true Grace from our Lord for our Association and for the entire Salesian Family. Now that the Bicentenary Year of the birth of our Father and Founder Don Bosco has drawn to a close, we prepare ourselves to share, along with the Church Universal, the Holy Year of the Mercy of God that Pope Francis has proclaimed. It is in this atmosphere of reflection on the love of the Father, the salvation brought to us by the Son Redeemer, and the strength that the Holy Spirit pours out on each one of us and on all, that I present to you this “Commentary on the Project of Apostolic Life.” It is an actualization, a dynamic and faithful revision of the former Official Commentary of 1990, in the light of the Project of Apostolic Life ratified by the Salesian Cooperator Congress in 2012. Just like our Project of Apostolic Life, this Commentary is also a fruit of the commitment, hard work, study, and discernment of many Cooperators. A lively “thank you,” therefore, goes to the former World Council: Coordinator, Rosario Maiorano, and the Delegates, Don Stjepan Bolkovac and Sr. Maria Trigila, who initiated an immense task of commenting on each individual article of the Statutes. Afterwards, the members of the World Executive Secretary of the present Cooperator World Council collaborated with much dedication and care in drawing up this final version, thus bringing to completion the revision and organizing the comments in a schematic form, complete with clear references to the most recent Magisterium of the Church and to the documents of the Salesian Family.

  • Sanctity in the Salesian Family
SOCIETA’ DI SAN FRANCESCO DI SALES SEDE CENTRALE SALESIANA Via Marsala 42 - 00185 Roma Il Postulatore Generale per le Cause dei Santi Don Pierluigi CAMERONI SDB, Postulatore Generale per le Cause dei Santi [email protected] DECEMBER 31 2018, ROME SANCTITY IN THE SALESIAN FAMILY "The real protagonists of the new evangelization are saints: they speak a language that is comprehensible to all with the example of the life and deeds of charity" (Benedict XVI 23.10.2012). It is indeed our bounden duty to express a deep gratitude and praise to God for the Holiness already recognized in the Salesian family of Don Bosco and for those who are on the way of being recognized. The result of a cause of beatification and canonization is an event of extraordinary relevance and of ecclesial significance. In fact, it involves a discernment on the fame of holiness of a baptized person who lived the Beatitudes to a heroic degree or who gave his life for Christ. The celebration of the bicentenary of Don Bosco's birth was a favorable opportunity to deepen and spread his spiritual experience, which flourished in rich and diverse fruits of Holiness. Starting from on Don Bosco to the present day we recognize a tradition of Holiness which deserves a special attention because the charism received from Don Bosco, expressed itself in several walks of life in its diverse forms. They are men and women, young and old, religious and laity, bishops and missionaries in different social, cultural and historical contexts in time and space have made Salesian charism to shine, representing a heritage which plays an effective role in life and in the community of believers and men of good will.
