1 I did not know the Levant in its heyday, I arrived too late, all that was left of the spectacle was a tattered backcloth, all that remained of the banquet were a few crumbs. But I always hoped that one day the party might start up again, I did not want to believe that fate had seen me born into a house already condemned to demolition. My people have built many houses, from Anatolia to Mount Lebanon, to coastal cities and the valley of the Nile, only to abandon them, one after another. I feel a nostalgia for them, unsurprisingly, and also a little stoic resignation when confronted by the vanity of things. Never become attached to something you might miss when the day comes that you must leave! It was in Beirut that I was born, on February 25, 1949. The news was announced the following day, as was once cus- tomary, via a paragraph in the newspaper where my father worked: Mother and child are both doing well. The country and the region, on the other hand, were doing badly. Few realized it at the time, but the descent into hell had already begun. Egypt, the adoptive country of my mother’s family, was in turmoil. On February 12, two weeks before my birth, Hassan al-Banna, founder of the Muslim Brotherhood, had been assassinated. He had gone to meet with one of his political allies; as he left the building, a car drew up and a gunman fired. Although shot in the chest, he did not collapse and the wound did not seem serious. -

Faten Hamama and the 'Egyptian difference' in film madamasr.com January 20 In 1963, Faten Hamama made her one and only Hollywood film. Entitled Cairo, the movie was a remake of The Asphalt Jungle, but refashioned in an Egyptian setting. In retrospect, there is little remarkable about the film but for Hamama’s appearance alongside stars such as George Sanders and Richard Johnson. Indeed, copies are extremely difficult to track down: Among the only ways to watch the movie is to catch one of the rare screenings scheduled by cable and satellite network Turner Classic Movies. However, Hamama’s foray into Hollywood is interesting by comparison with the films she was making in “the Hollywood on the Nile” at the time. The next year, one of the great classics of Hamama’s career, Al-Bab al-Maftuh (The Open Door), Henri Barakat’s adaptation of Latifa al-Zayyat’s novel, hit Egyptian screens. In stark contrast to Cairo, in which she played a relatively minor role, Hamama occupied the top of the bill for The Open Door, as was the case with practically all the films she was making by that time. One could hardly expect an Egyptian actress of the 1960s to catapult to Hollywood stardom in her first appearance before an English-speaking audience, although her husband Omar Sharif’s example no doubt weighed upon her. Rather, what I find interesting in setting 1963’s Cairo alongside 1964’s The Open Door is the way in which the Hollywood film marginalizes the principal woman among the film’s characters, while the Egyptian film sets that character well above all male counterparts. -

Arab-West Report, December 22, 2009 Title: Arabic Poetry as a possible Metalanguage for Intercultural Dialogue Author: Daniel Roters “For me the province of poetry is a private ecstasy made public, and the social role of the poet is to display moments of shared universal epiphanies capable of healing our sense of mortal estrangement—from ourselves, from each other, from our source, from our destiny, from the Divine” (Danial Abdal-Hayy, US-American poet) Introduction The aim of this study is to show how modern Arabic literature and poetry could help in the effort to understand modern Arab society and its problems. At the same time it will be necessary to describe the history of Arabic poetry if we want to understand how important poetry in contemporary Arab society is. This whirlwind tour through the history of Arabic poetry will be restrained to the function of the poet and the role of poetry played in general in Arabic-Islamic history. Indeed the preoccupation with works of modern writers should not only be an issue for organizations working on the improvement of intercultural dialogue. It is also of great importance that the scholarly discourse in Islamic or Middle Eastern Studies recognizes the importance of modern Arabic literature. Arabic literature could be another valuable source of information, in addition to the Qur' ān and Sunnah. If you 1 consider the theory of theologian Hermann Gunkel about the “Sitz im Leben ” (seat in life) and if we question a lyrical or prose text about the formative stage, it is possible to learn much about the society from which an author is addressing his audience. -

Hence came my study entitled "The Child in Contemporary Iraqi Poetry", which is an attempt to clarify the symbols of the word (the child) and what it indicates according to the context in which they are mentioned, as well as the statement of the aesthetic aspects of how to employ these symbols through the selection of poetic texts of modern poets in which the image of the child was mentioned Where this image was linked to the intellectual and political framework of the trends of Iraqi poets to create with it multiple connotations that were in harmony with the successive conflicts and revolutions that the poet employed to express intellectual, political and artistic positions. Modern Iraqi poetry by this expression means what many poets wrote in a non-traditional or traditional (classical) poetry curriculum in the literature of their languages. -

Every Culture Is Internally Plural
Chapter One Introduction "Every culture is internally plural"(Parekh, 2010, 239).Wherever and whenever anyone goes to any country all over the world, there will be ethnic groups; ethnicity as a concept is defined as “the cultural characteristics that connect a particular group or groups of people to each other" (Horowitz, 2005, 718). Additionally, ethnicity refers to “the ethnic quality or affiliation of a group which is normally characterized in terms of culture”. The ethnic groups are usually characterized in terms of common culture, nationality, or language. The cultural background could be a determinant of the ethnic affiliation or identity (Betancourt & Lopez, 1993, 631). According to Max Weber, ethnic groups are defined as “groups of humans who have a subjective belief in shared origins, a belief which is founded on a similarity of habits, customs or both or on collective memories of migrations or colonization” (Ethnicity, 2003). These groups might also belong to a different race or religion from the dominant ones, sometimes they have a special culture that is relatively different from the others. For example, in the U.S., there are African Americans, Hispanics and Latinos. The ethnic groups are usually represented within a specific frame or what we can call a "stereotype". This stereotype or image is absorbed by the others while they are growing up. These images are not only represented in television programs and movies but also in books, cartoons, advertisements, radio, and even in the jokes the people say or the insults used by the friends (Martindale, 1996, 22). In Egypt, there are also ethnic groups; some of these groups are marginalized in terms of being shown in media, like the Bedouins of Sinai and the Nubians (Abdulla, 2012, 11). -

International Journal of Research in Humanities and Social Studies Volume 2, Issue 5, May 2015, PP 84-95 ISSN 2394-6288 (Print) & ISSN 2394-6296 (Online) The Nile and the Egyptian Revolutions: Ecology and Culture in Modern Arabic Poetry 2015 Hala Ewaidat Assistant Professor of English Literature, Department of English, Faculty of Education, Mansoura University, Egypt ABSTRACT For more than thirty years the River Nile has been deteriorating as a result of the industrial activities, economic expansion, pollution, population growth and the destructive policies of the government of the former president Hosni Mubarak. The primary concern of this study is to introduce the profound connection of environmental changes on the River Nile and the culture of the Egyptian society that is reflected through the medium of twentieth century Arabic poetry. Beginning with excerpts of poems from the ancient period, the paper traces the relevance and meaning of the underlying cultural aspects of Egyptian society through representation of the Nile in comparison to the way these cultural attitudes are depicted in poetry written during the three major revolutions in twentieth century Egypt: the 1919 Revolution, 1952 Revolution, and the 25 January 2011 Revolution. Each course has 6 (six) credit points and 100 marks with 6 contact hours per week (4 hours of lectures, 2 hours of tutorial and other activities). The internal assessment carries 30 marks, while the end-semester examination carries 70 marks. In the end semester examination, a unit of each course carries 14 marks and in each course the questions for 30-35 marks are to be answered compulsorily in Arabic.
